Kayla
I felt chills travel down my spine when they stopped at the entrance of the forest. “What should we do with her?”
“Once we’re inside the forest, we get rid of her and carry the proof that she’s dead to our Alpha and our job is done,” I heard the leader say.
So someone actually sent them to kill me. My life was in grave danger and I had no idea how long I had left but one thing was certain I had to escape. I quickly bit the rogue in his human form dragging me into the forests and took off.
I began running deeper into the mountains, holding my dress in my hand, with the rogue wolves after me. I slashed around and gazed back in hopes of finding a hideout but I couldn’t.
I was out of breath, but I kept on running. It was better than standing and waiting for them to kill me. My gaze wasn’t properly focused on the ground as the rogues were almost at me. My shaking legs slipped down a narrow path. Suddenly, I tripped against what felt like hard rock, and before I could do anything, I was rolling and tumbling down the slope of the mountain.
My body instantly became sore as I stopped rolling, but to my frustration the rogues after me were unrelenting. I stood up and continued running, coming to an instant halt.
There was nowhere else to run again, it was a dead end. I was on a cliff and deep down were rocky woodland and the sea.
There’s no way I was going to jump down there. I wanted to run in the opposite direction, but the rogues surrounded me. A victorious smile was imprinted on their vicious gaze.
“Do you possibly think you can escape from us? For the damn stress you gave us, we have to just kill you and throw your body inside….”
He was interrupted by a chilling howl. It echoed loudly in the air, vibrating throughout the mountains, forcing the rogues to snap their heads in the direction it vibrated from.
My eyes widened visibly at Asher. He was in his human form, sharing partial control with his wolf. His eyes narrowed on me from a distance before gauging the rogues surrounding me. From his glares, I could feel the deathly chill in the air as it rushed past me. His golden amber eyes were now bloodshot and raging, and his pointed sharp claws and canines were protruding.
Relief flooded my bones at his arrival just in time to save me from the impending doom.
The rogue’s gaze narrowed from Asher to me. There was a satisfying streak of devilish joy that swarmed through their gaze. It seemed like they were elated that Asher appeared just in time to watch me die.
At once they all lunged at me, but Asher was quicker. In a fast motion, he jumped to my front as a shield, sticking his claws into them. His sharp canines bit off their necks. Asher was fighting ferociously and ruthlessly without mercy and their numbers were decreasing.
The rogues backed away briefly gathering their strength while some shifted into their wolves. Asher snapped his head back to me inspecting me.
The crimson-red glow of his eyes darkened dangerously as it took in the blood rushing from my arm and cuts all over my body. He growled again, shifted into his wolf, and lunged at the wolves that charged at him. He killed brutally, his claws leaving each of his victims in a horrid state.
I was taken by surprise when one of the wolves managed to evade Asher and instead lunged at me, with his sharp claws aiming for me. I jerked backward, jumping out of its path, earning a scratch on my arm.
The wolf was relentless, his claws came at me again, pushing me off the cliff.
A fearful cry for help vibrated from my throat, gaining Asher’s attention. I could see the pain, and unyielding horror in his eyes as he tried to reach out to me but it was too late. I was falling already. I watched as he dived his claws into the heart of the wolf that had pushed me and before my eyes, he jumped off right after me.
What the hell was wrong with him? Why would he jump off a cliff for me? Everything happened in slow motion and Asher shifted back to his human form in mid-air. He was so breathtakingly handsome even while falling from a cliff. I gasped as the water hit my back and a few seconds later I felt hands grip my waist and I was pulled into a hard warm chest.
I scanned his face when he carried us out of the water. I was delighted to be in his arms again. He came for me and even jumped off a cliff because of me this could only mean one thing that Asher actually cared so much about me. I wanted to keep staring at his face but something bothered me. His amber eyes were burning with anger and it was directed at me.
For a damned second, I was taken aback. I could not understand what had him all riled up.
“Asher!” I whispered as I tried to get him to say something but he didn’t utter a word instead he kept walking until he pressed me up against a tree.
“Do you have a death wish?” He roared. We were now chest to chest and his breathing was loud.
I tried to catch my breath. So many things had happened all at once and it was taking me a while to find my thoughts. In fact, his sudden anger surprised me.
“Why do you gamble with your life Kayla? I leave you all alone for a moment and next thing you enter into a life-threatening situation. What happened to mind-linking me immediately after the rogues took you away?
Do you know what would have happened if I hadn’t arrived just in time?”
My legs were still wrapped around him and my back was pressed up against the tree behind me. I could see multiple emotions cross his eyes and I tried to read every single one of them. But staring into Asher’s eyes was like looking into the moon so mesmerizing and one could easily drown in it.
I gasped as his thumb pulled on my bottom lip out of nowhere, “I won’t forgive myself if anything should happen to you.”
And before I could figure out what was happening, his lips came crashing down on mine.
