Lilith’s POV
He muttered some curse words quietly to himself just enough for him to hear before turning his attention back to me.
After a moment of thought, he finally gave in and said, “Alright, fine. But I want to be there with you.” His voice carried a sense of weight and seriousness, showing how important this was to him.
I let out a long deep sigh. I really didn’t want to get into an argument about this, but the idea of Adams being in danger along with me made me feel both relieved and worried at the same time.
I knew he wanted to help and that made me feel a bit better, but I also couldn’t shake off the anxiety about what could happen to him.
After a moment, I decided to accept the situation. I nodded at him to show that I was agreeing.
We turned our bodies around to face the guards and then Adams spoke in a serious tone, asking them, “Did Kael come back along with anyone else?”
One of the guards slowly shook his head from side to side, his face showing a serious and worried look. “No, Your Highness. It was only Captain Kael who was here.”
A feeling of fear surrounded my heart as I tried to understand the meaning of what I had just learned.
I couldn’t help but wonder what had actually happened out there. What kind of darkness were we going to have to face?
I felt a heavy sadness in my heart as I noticed the strange and unsettling silence that surrounded us. There were no soldiers anywhere and that fact made a wave of fear wash over me.
I began to speak, “Does this mean…” but as I was trying to voice out my thoughts, what came to my mind felt so overwhelming that I could not complete my statement.
It was as if reality pressed me down, making it difficult to breathe or say what was in my mind.
Adams’s expression changed, and his face became serious as he looked into my eyes. I could really sense that he was worried about something.
He said, “This could mean that they were overpowered. It’s important for us to figure out what happened over there.”
“Then we really need to have a conversation with Kael!” I said loudly, feeling a strong sense of urgency rushing through me.
“He is currently unconscious right now and there is a possibility that this might be our only opportunity to hear what he knows.”
“Yes, that’s true. However, we must make sure that it is safe first,” Adams said. His voice sounded protective, but there was also an element of calmness that felt a bit frustrating.
“To be completely honest with you, Lilith, I need you to remain here in the palace until I can be absolutely certain that everything is safe.”
“No! I absolutely refuse to just sit here and do nothing while I wait!” My feelings of anger and frustration surged up inside me and I could hear my voice bouncing off the walls in the empty room.
“You can’t possibly expect me to just stay back and do nothing when there’s a chance that Kael might be in serious danger or even die!”
He took a step closer to me and his voice was calming, like a comforting blanket that was meant to protect me. However, instead of making me feel safe, it only made me feel more rebellious and determined to stand my ground.
He said, “Lilith, I truly understand the worries you have, but you need to realize that this situation is very dangerous. I cannot put your safety in jeopardy because of anything in the world. You are my mate, and you mean everything to me. My main focus is to ensure that you are safe at all times. So please just stay here at the palace where I know you will be protected.”
“Safe?” I exclaimed, unable to hide my disbelief.
“If we just sit back and do nothing while Kael’s life is in danger, how can that possibly be safe for anyone at all? What kind of leaders would we be if we stood by and let something terrible happen?”
“A leader who truly cares about the lives of his friends and companions!” he exclaimed with his voice filled with frustration. But as he spoke his expression changed.
The anger began to fade, and a gentle warmth appeared in his eyes, showing that love was also present amidst the stress and tension on his face. “I’m asking you, Lilith. Please.”
I could sense that the guards were right behind us. Their silent looks at each other seemed to fill the air with a feeling of unspoken thoughts and judgments about what was happening.
Despite this pressure, I was confident in the decision I had made. Adams was clearly feeling torn. I could tell he was struggling between wanting to keep us safe and his urge to take action.
After a moment of thinking, he spoke up, saying with a calm tone, “I need a horse.”
As he walked closer to the stables, I found myself pausing for a moment feeling uncertain. I was watching his face closely, trying to understand what he was feeling. It was clear to me that he was feeling a lot of internal struggle.
I could see that he was deeply torn between two strong emotions-his love for Kael and the urgency of the situation.
“Adams, please wait,” I called out to him, making sure to soften my voice so that I could convey my sincerity. I quickly pulled him closer and planted a deep long kiss on his lips.
“I’ll be here waiting. Don’t hesitate to send for me if the healers can’t cure or revive Kael,” I said.
“I’ll surely do that, love,” he replied calmly, with the fire of desire still burning in his eyes.
Hearing his words filled my heart with so much love that I had to move closer to him. I wanted to make sure he understood the seriousness of what I was saying, especially because I saw his concern for me.
So I told him, “You do not need to entertain the fear of losing me. I give you my word that I will be right here by your side.” I spoke to ease his tension.
At the stables I could hear a lot of noise as the guards got ready to prepare a horse. I took a very deep breath in order to calm myself down and steady my heart, which was beating very fast.
“Get the horse!” Adams shouted to the guards…
