The suspect they were discussing not only did not hide but appeared before Judith and the others in a brazen manner, which made them furious.
The atmosphere was silent and a bit awkward, but Darnell laughed again, “Captain Meech, we meet again.”
“Why are you here?” Judith’s face turned stern.
“What are you doing here?” Judith’s frustration was evident. She had asked people to find out Darnell’s whereabouts, and now he appeared before her, so she asked him why he was here.
“I’m here to see Kameron.” Darnell raised a fruit basket in his hand. “I came to the hospital today to collect the final payment from Chandler. When I heard that Kameron was being treated here, I bought a fruit basket. After all, I took Kameron’s car in Horizon Yard and chatted with him for more than ten minutes. We can be considered acquaintances. It’s only right to visit him.”
He also glanced at Judith casually.
The woman today was dressed in a black uniform, and even her eyes and corners of her mouth were slanted when she spoke. She had her duty code and gun hanging on her arm. Combined with her tone of speech, she gave off an impression of being fierce. However, her tall figure gave people the desire to conquer.
While several police officers looked at each other, Kameron burst into laughter. “Darnell, you’re thoughtful. Come on, have a seat.”
With Darnell’s arrival, Judith instantly dismissed the idea of finding Steve and waved for two colleagues to follow up while she stayed behind.
“Kameron, what happened? Why are you hospitalized all of a sudden?”
At that moment, Darnell walked into the room with a smile and placed the fruit basket on the coffee table before pulling up a chair.
“Is it due to overwork? Or is it a physical condition?”
“The last time I saw you, your complexion didn’t look good. And now you’re suddenly hospitalized. Kameron, you need to take care of your health. It’s crucial for our cause.”
Judith felt that something was off. This guy had always been in control and now he was speaking like a leader. It made her feel frustrated.
Kameron didn’t think much of it and laughed heartily, “I’m fifty years old. It’s normal for my health to weaken a bit. Occasionally being hospitalized is quite common.”
“Is that so? But I feel like your complexion is really not good.”
While laughing, Darnell grabbed Kameron’s wrist to check his pulse. “I’ve learned some medical skills. Let me take a look at you.”
Kameron was slightly surprised but then laughed heartily again. “Darnell, you’re truly talented. You know everything. Alright, go ahead.”
People of his age always seemed inexplicably doting and accommodating towards their juniors.
While checking Kameron’s pulse, Darnell suddenly remembered something and looked at Judith before speaking, “Captain Meech, I heard at the entrance that you were looking for me.”
“I don’t know what it’s about. Is it about the reward for being a good citizen last time?”
“If that’s the case, it would be great because I’m about to pay rent. If the reward comes through, it will be just enough to cover it.”
“If there’s a lot of reward money, I’ll treat you to dinner as well. If there isn’t much reward money, then I won’t.”
“Darnell!”
Kameron didn’t mind Darnell’s banter, but Judith couldn’t hold back and spoke coldly,
“Don’t play tricks here. Kameron didn’t get sick and end up in the hospital. He was knocked unconscious by a criminal.”
“Darnell, I suspect you are the culprit who attacked Kameron. Confess honestly.”
“Where were you yesterday morning? Tell me every place you went.”
Darnell smirked. “Captain Meech, you overestimate me. I’m just a small employee who worries about fighting thugs and is always on edge. How could I have the guts to attack an officer?”
“As for my whereabouts yesterday, it was simple. I went to the Harmony Hospital with Lillian at nine in the morning to deliver some items, then I went home and slept.”
“If you don’t believe me, you can verify it slowly or check the surveillance footage.”
Darnell leisurely said, “If there is solid evidence against me, I don’t mind being arrested. Just let me treat Kameron’s illness first.”
Kameron was taken aback. “I’m sick? What illness do I have?”
“Kameron, don’t listen to his nonsense. If he can even diagnose patients now, there are miracle doctors everywhere.”
Judith stared at Darnell coldly and sarcastically said, “Darnell, stop trying to change the subject. Today, I will get to the bottom of this.”
“And your reason is too foolish. The Whiteville Hospital has the best equipment and medical team in Whiteville.”
“If I want to verify if there is anything wrong with Kameron’s health, it won’t take half an hour to get results.”
“Why do you embarrass yourself?”
Darnell ignored Judith and continued staring at Kameron.
“Kameron, let’s not pay attention to outsiders’ nonsense. Let’s have a discussion between a patient and a doctor now.”
“Do you often have localized skin ulcers that don’t respond to medication but heal on their own after some time and the affected areas also become darker?”
When Judith was about to explode with anger at Darnell’s words, Kameron paused for a moment and then nodded.
“Yes, there were on my back, chest, ankles, or buttocks. They ulcerate every few months and no medication has an immediate effect.”
“But within a week at most, they disappear on their own. Those areas of skin also become slightly darker but don’t cause any pain.”
Judith looked at Darnell with disdain. “This illness of Kameron’s is known by almost half of the police station. It’s no secret.”
Darnell still paid no attention to Judith and continued looking at Kameron.
“Also, do you occasionally experience slight pain near your earlobe? Sometimes even a tingling sensation?”
Kameron was surprised. “How did you know?”
Judith and several police officers were also taken aback since they didn’t know about Kameron’s condition. So Darnell’s diagnosis was confirmed and it surprised them.
Could this guy really have medical skills?
But Judith quickly dismissed the thought. She didn’t think Darnell had such ability. He probably just happened to guess correctly.
“So what if the mole hurts? What kind of illness is this? What could it be? Don’t casually make things up. I can make the hospital expose your lies in no time.”
She peeled an apple for Kameron.
Darnell glanced at Judith disdainfully before solemnly saying to Kameron, “Kameron, these are your symptoms.”
“Don’t worry. Based on my diagnosis, this mole near your earlobe has already started degenerating.”
“It has become a tumor now. Fortunately, it’s still in its early stages, but in six months, it could become a serious issue.”
Darnell looked more serious. “You need timely treatment.”
“What? A tumor?”
Kameron was shocked with disbelief written all over his face as he dropped the apple he had been holding onto the floor with a loud thud.
“Why is this mole turning into a tumor? It has been with me for decades!”
“I’ve been looking at it every day and touching it without any changes until recently when it started hurting slightly. How could it be a tumor?”
A regular mole beside his earlobe that had been there obediently for decades suddenly turned into a tumor. It was difficult for anyone to accept such a diagnosis.
Judith hurriedly tried to comfort Kameron, “Kameron, don’t listen to his nonsense. He’s scaring you.”
Then she turned cold again. “Darnell, stop talking nonsense! Do you know that what you’re doing might frighten Kameron? It could affect his mood!”
“You’re not here today just to visit Kameron. You want to make things worse for him, right? Are you trying to influence him so that he won’t remember your attack on an officer?”
“I warn you. If you don’t apologize to Kameron right away, I’ll arrest you, you quack!”
Kameron stared at Darnell, hoping he would say he was joking.
“This is reality,” Darnell said without fear of Judith’s threat.
“It’s melanoma!”
