DOMINICK.
For a long second, I stare in shock at Clarisse’s crumpled and still body on the floor, totally fearing the worst.
It is the sight of blood that kicks me into motion.
“Clarisse!” I exclaim as I hurry towards her body, lifting her head to see her eye closed. “Clarisse! Come on, babe. Please open your eyes.”
I try to shake her awake a few times and that is when I notice the blood.
A lot of it.
Pooling underneath her.
Oh, goddess
Please, please not our baby.
I lift her in one swoop and race through thr mansion, out the door and across the pack to get to the pack clinic.
“George!” I roar as I burst into the building, panting and frantic. “Where the heel is George?!” I scream at the stunned and foolishly staring attendants.
A few of them scatter, hopefully to go in search of him while two others rush over and wheel over a hospital bed.
“Alpha,” they call as one gesture towards the bed, urging me to put her on it.
“Get me George!” I growl at them, to scared to let her go.
Oh, what have I done?
How could I…
What am I going to do?
“Alpha… we need to check her vitals,” on 3if them says.
“I said, get me Ge-”
“Alpha!” a deep, gruff voice calls and I turn to see a towering man, heading this way with a concerned scowl on his face.
George.
He has been the head healer of the pack for as long as I can remember.
He had my parent’s trust and respect as well as mine
If anyone can save Clarisse… save my baby, it will be him.
“George!” I call out in relief as I hurry to him, still holding Clarisse. “Help her, please.”
“What happened?” he asks as he lays a hand in my back and moves me towards the hospital bed that was supplied earlier.
At his urging, I place her in it, quite carefully before I answer
“I… I was in a mood. I… I didn’t see her… I dint hear her. She just came up from behind me. I didn’t mean to … I swear, it was a mistake…I…”
“I believe you,” he says with another pat in my back before he signals for them to take her away.
“What… what are you going to do?” I ask in panic as my body subconsciously moves to follow her.
“I need you to be calm, Alpha,” he says as he blocks my way, forcing my gaze to leave her pale form and focus on him.
“But…”
“We are going to do all of our best to save her, as well as the child,” he assures me. “But I am going to need you to remain here and be calm.”
“Calm?! I can’t be calm! I… she is pregnant, George! I might have just liked my baby. I have to be there with her!”
“Your presence in the operating room will not help her in any way. All it would do, is make the attendants nervous.”
“Are the not professionals?!” I demand. “Why the hell would they be nervous?”
“Alpha,” he calls gently but firmly. “I need to get into that operating room. Can I be assured that you will remain here?”
I sigh as I give in, collapsing into one of the waiting chairs before leaning over, placing my head into my hands.
“Fine, George. I will wait here,” I say. “Just… save her. Save them, please.”
“I will do my very best.”
I know he will, but the questions remains …
Would his best be enough?
He nods before walking away and I am left in the all consuming darkness and loneliness, with only my churning thoughts as company.
Why?
Just why would she sneak up in me like that?
She knows how I am, how I can get when angered, so why would she do that?
She was basically asking for it.
And now, now I might…
Oh, goddess.
Please, please not my child
We have been hoping upon hope for a child, and despite the difficulty she finally got pregnant.
And now… now, we might lose it.
How?
Just how in the world is that fair?
I have no idea how long I reminded here, sitting with my head bowed low, fear and terror swirling in me, when I heard George clearing his throat above me.
Like an elec8shovk, I shot up to my feet, grabbing his arms as I beg him to tell me good news
“Well? How is she? How is my baby?”
“The Luna is alright. She lost a lot of blood, but she is safe. She will need time to recover from the blood loss and shock,” he answers.
“And my baby? What about my child?”
“i… I am sorry, Alpha. We couldn’t save it.”
“No,” I gasp out as all strength leaves my legs and I collapse back in the chair. “No. No. No. That can’t be.”
“The pregnancy was already in shaky ground with how difficult it was for her to conceive. The force of the… throw… it destabilized the fetus.”
“No…”
“There… there is one more thing, Alpha.”
“What?” I ask, my mind already going numb.
“The Luna… she… she will not be able to conceive again. I am sorry.”
I don’t say anything to that. I just stare at him like he had just said gibberish
Not conceive? Again?
What is that supposed to mean?
That I will not have an heir?
He bows his head in respect before walking away.
I watch him leave, and like as if I am I submerged in water, I hear absolutely nothing.
Like I am drowning.
With robotic movements, I get to my feet and walk towards her room.
The place is cold and unfeeling, the aura coming more from the woman in the bed rather than the Air con.
“Clarisse…” I call out gently
She doesn’t move. Doesn’t even respond
Her gaze is fixed firmly out the window, ignoring me.
“I… I am sorry,” I say. “So, sorry.”
“I never should have mated with you,” she responds, still strung out the window. “If I had just waited for mine, I would have had my children by now.”
Yes, the reason why we had so much difficulty having a child was because of the simple reason that we are not mates.
A deterrent by the goddess to ensure that we all stay loyal to our mates.
But my mate is dead.
I had killed her.
A stupid move, clearly.
So, what the hell am I supposed to do now?
“I am sorry,” I say one more time before leaving the room, slowly making my way towards the mansion.
“Alpha?” on of the wolves, another spy greets with a bow.
“What is it?” I ask drolly as I head into my study.
I make a beeline for the hanging bar by the corner if the room and pour myself a full tumbler of whisky. I down that one and pour another, only halting when I see the wild staring.
“Well, spit it out already!” I snap at him
“Ri -right. It is the Alpha Viktor as well as the alphas of the indigo, Sky, and Grange packs.”
“What about them?”
“They went somewhere. Together. A few days ago.”
“Where?”
“Towards the Winter Wolf Coalition.”
“Hmm,” I say with a sneer before doing the full glass.
Just what I needed.
