Tom didn’t know how to respond. “Mom, have you been overthinking lately?”
“It’s not me overthinking, it’s the distance between you two,” Jane scolded as she walked into the living room. “Seriously, you’re in a relationship, why go back to the lab? Isn’t it better to be a CEO at the company? You’d have money and leisure. Alright, alright, think about it yourself. I’m not talking to you anymore. Call Agnes right away!”
With that, Jane hung up the phone.
Abroad, in front of a laboratory building’s window, Tom Fritz, dressed in work clothes, held his phone that had just been hung up. He looked at the blue sky and white clouds with a deepened gaze.
Mom went to see her…
This was a situation he had always worried about, yet it still happened.
He thought for a moment and found the girl’s number in his contacts. He was considering whether to call… If he disturbed her, he should apologize.
In Arkpool City, evening, in an apartment.
Agnes sat cross-legged at her desk, staring at the sunset outside. Today’s sunset was beautiful and stirred her thoughts.
The evening breeze gently moved the curtains.
Five minutes later, her phone rang on the desk. She snapped out of her daze, thinking it was a colleague.
When she saw the name on the screen, her heart skipped a beat!
She had saved his contact as “Kitten,” those familiar and heartwarming words made her feel a moment of surrealism.
This was a number she had memorized by heart and always wanted to call but never dared to.
Because she didn’t know what to say if she did call; she feared losing control of her emotions.
Even texting him could kill the conversation.
The ringtone continued…
The girl quickly came back to her senses, picked up the phone, and nervously answered it. “Hello.” She almost held her breath as she spoke carefully.
“Agnes.” Tom called her name warmly, suddenly feeling strange himself. “…” He was at a loss for words.
The girl smiled. “Are you busy?” She was happy that he called her first but remained composed and calm.
“Not really, I’m free now. Just got out of the lab.”
He called her right after finishing work?
Agnes felt sweet inside; she smiled slightly and felt warmth spreading through her body.
Tom Fritz apologized, “I just called my mom. She said she went to see you, is that true?”
“Yes.”
“Sorry for disturbing you,” Tom said. “Did it cause you any trouble?”
The girl suddenly felt sad. If this counted as disturbing, then what had she done to him over these seven years?
Wouldn’t harassment be an understatement?
“It wasn’t a disturbance,” Agnes suppressed all her emotions and replied softly. “She spent quite a bit on me-bought me meals, clothes, shoes, bags-but don’t worry, I’ll pay you back.”
“What are you saying? I’m not asking you for money,” Tom Fritz felt even more apologetic sensing her caution. “I should thank you for keeping it from my mom and making her happy.”
Lying this big must be very stressful for her. She had to face all possible situations over there.
“So…” Agnes felt a slight pain in her heart but still smiled as she asked, “So when do you plan to tell them the truth?” She wanted to probe his mind.
Tom Fritz fell silent… because he didn’t know either.
