They are gone

Just like Devon said, I fell asleep a few seconds after he left. Unlike his words, when he made it sound like I could fight that sleep if I wanted, I couldn’t do that. The pull was so strong I didn’t even know I slept until I got up later. I still didn’t know the time, so there was no way to know how long I slept. I got down from the bed. Surprisingly, the pain I felt when I woke up before I took the pills had disappeared. I felt like a new person like I could take anyone up.
I walked over to the window and drew the curtains, wincing as the bright light fluttered into the room. I hastily closed the curtains, rubbing my eyes.
If I’d known it was this bright outside, I wouldn’t have attempted to open the window. I would have stayed in my room with the dim lights. Hissing at the sun as if it were the reason I opened the curtains, I walked into the bathroom to have my bath.
My body felt like it hadn’t felt the touch of water on it for days now, and I didn’t like that feeling. After my bath, I returned to the room, only to notice a tray of food I overlooked when I went in. I knew no one came into the room while I was bathing because I didn’t hear the door.
I towelled my body dry and put on a new set of clothes before I walked over to my dressing table to eat. I devoured the food, polishing off the soup, like a starved woman. The chicken didn’t even see the light of the day. I almost ate the bones. Well, I would have done that if it weren’t strong.
I had just finished my meal when I heard noises outside. At first, I didn’t think it was odd. As the number of guards in the palace started increasing, my mates created a practising schedule for them. They mostly practised under the room’s window, which was why I could hear them.
However, when the sound became too loud to be taken as their practice sounds, I got up from the chair and walked over to the window. This time, I was prepared when I opened the curtains. I drew them to the side before I completely opened the window and looked down, expecting to see the guards practising, but there was no one in sight.
Puzzled, I glanced around the perimeters for the guards who always patrolled around, but the place was devoid of the guards whose presence was a constant to me.
“Huh?”
I pushed away from the window and hastened over to the door as the sounds got louder. My heart thumped against my chest as I opened the door. I didn’t know what I was expecting, but I knew it had to be something serious. The lack of guards outside and the sound of battle cries were enough to make me know something was going on.
With my heart in my chest, I ran down the hallway. The farther I got from my room, the louder the noises became. It was then that I realized it was the sound of a battle cry, not practising guards.
I rushed towards the kids’ nursery, knowing Chris and Devon would be there, as they were the only ones who could tell me what was going on.
The moment I opened the door, all the blood drained from my face as I took in the disarrayed room. The babies’ cribs were on the floor, broken. The curtains had all been torn out, and the windows were shattered. There was no sign of my babies or Chris in the room.
“No!” I screamed when I felt a rage so deep that it almost shocked me to my bones and took root within me. At that moment, it felt like I was being controlled by the darkness once more.
I left the room and rushed down the hallway to the stairs, just as the sounds got louder. From the little I could pick up, I knew the noise came from the public side of the palace. I didn’t bother going to the private sitting room. I hastened towards the throne room, to the place the sound came the loudest.
I took the stairs two at a time as I tried not to let my fear take hold of me. I didn’t want to let myself think of what might be happening at the moment.
The minute I reached the hallway that led to the throne room, I was met with a scene I thought I wouldn’t see again. Dead Bodies strewed the floor, creating a path from where I stood to the throne room. I walked around them, careful not to step on them as I hastened towards the throne room.
The doors were left ajar, and I walked in. Just like the hallways, bodies littered the floor. Only a few were still alive, fighting with all their might.
Devon and Chris stood together behind the thrones as they fought off the men.
Seeing them without the kids, I lost it as I screamed. “Where are the babies?!!”
They froze, just like I did when I stepped into the kids’ nursery.
“What the hell are you talking about?!” Devon made quick work of the remaining men. “The kids are in the nursery. I placed a protective shield around them and -”
“They are not there. The children are gone. The nursery is empty.”
“Impossible!”
While Chris dragged a man towards us, Devon rushed out of the room. I followed him, keeping my pace with him as I tried to keep my pounding heart from leaping out of my chest. I could feel my powers at the tips of my fingers, ready to be unleashed.
Ever since I woke up. I haven’t tried to use my powers. However, the thoughts of my babies being in the wrong hands made me want to talk to their hideouts, remove their eyes and force them to eat them before removing their hearts from their chests.
