Corey’s face turned serious, finally shedding his stern demeanor. “She used to be Mr. Scott’s assistant. I noticed her efficiency at an event and asked Mr. Scott to let her work for me. Mr. Oconnor, you might have seen her before.”
“Charlotte, come and greet Mr. Oconnor.”
Today, Charlotte wore a business suit, looking more formal and less frivolous. She dared not meet Nelson’s eyes. “Hello, Mr. Oconnor.”
Nelson leaned back. “I remember you make excellent tea. Why not show your new boss your skills?”
To Charlotte, this sounded humiliating, and her ears turned red.
She bent down to boil water and prepare tea, her fair hands pleasing to the eye. Corey couldn’t look away. “I must say, it’s delightful to see young people working.”
Nelson didn’t smile.
“Working for the government is good too. Following Mr. Woods is better than following Mr. Scott.”
Charlotte bit her lower lip. “… Yes.”
During the break, Nelson went to the restroom. As water flowed over his hands, he looked up expressionlessly and saw a woman standing behind him through the mirror.
“You are bold. If your new boss finds out, it won’t be easy for you,” he said coldly.
Charlotte clenched the hem of her clothes, feeling very wronged. “Mr. Oconnor, you misunderstand me. I’m not that kind of person…”
Nelson continued staring at her reflection.
“I didn’t handle things well in Afupshire, so Mr. Scott punished me. That’s why I’m with Mr. Woods, not for the reasons you think.”
“Why explain to me? This is between you and Jaquan.”
“I just don’t want you to misunderstand me.” Charlotte dared to look up, her eyes red like a rabbit’s.
Nelson recalled their accidental encounter that day and felt a slight headache. He turned around, glanced at her, then brushed past her. “Take responsibility for your own actions.”
After the dinner ended, Nelson saw Corey off into a car. Charlotte followed at the end, her eyes still red.
As the car sped away, his gaze became distant.
Anthony approached. “Mr. Oconnor, should we investigate?”
“How much can you find out about Jaquan’s people?” Nelson glanced sideways. “Let Kieran handle it.”
A rogue approach might yield more information.
Anthony suddenly thought of something. “Should we also let Kieran investigate Madam’s matters? After all, he used to have a good relationship with her.”
Nelson paused, his eyes darkening. “Hmm.”
He got into the car and added, “Corey has never been lenient. Have someone keep an eye on her; don’t let anything happen to her.”
Jaquan was not a kind person; his methods of punishment were varied and cruel. Nelson couldn’t tell if it was guilt from that day that made him want to spare her life.
Anthony realized he was referring to Charlotte and hesitated before responding, “Alright.”
The car drove a distance and arrived at the old mansion, where a familiar figure stood at the door.
“… It’s Madam.”
Lucia had been standing there all night waiting for Nelson.
She stubbornly raised her head, glaring fiercely in the direction of the back seat.
Nelson got out of the car slowly, his face cold as frost. “What are you doing here?”
Before she could answer, Lucia raised her hand to slap him.
This time Nelson didn’t take it; he grabbed her hand sharply. “What’s wrong this time?”
“Nelson, you ungrateful child!” Lucia was so furious she could barely stand. “You cut off my business deals!”
