Callie couldn’t pinpoint her emotions when facing him; the turmoil left her speechless.
She didn’t blame him, but he would never know the depth of her despair.
Seeing her silence, Nelson grabbed the medical record from her hand. The attending doctor’s flamboyant handwriting roughly described the treatment results.
Everything was fine upon re-examination.
Callie exhaled softly and snatched the record back from him. “It’s nothing serious; just needs some anti-inflammatory treatment.”
Their presence together quickly drew attention.
She had lost a lot of weight.
“Let’s have another check-up, just to be sure. After all, I owe you.”
Callie suddenly felt like laughing, and she did. “Nelson, I said it’s okay.”
They were like two clumsy dance partners, unsure of how to face each other or how to take the next step in sync.
In an instant, they felt like strangers.
Overwhelmed with guilt, Nelson cautiously took her hand. “Come home with me? Please?”
Callie had missed this man during these days, but now that she saw him, she didn’t know what to do.
Could those wounds really be ignored?
Even Callie hadn’t expected it when she shook her head. “I don’t want to go home with you now. Can you give me some time alone?”
It was clear Nelson was unwilling. His deep eyes, usually so confident, now showed confusion for the first time.
“You…”
For the first time, Callie felt exhausted. Being Mrs. Oconnor had worn her out.
“Alright, take your time. Contact me whenever you’re ready.” Nelson finally released his tightly clenched hand.
He watched Callie’s thin figure walk away step by step, disappearing from his sight. The warmth in his hand faded endlessly, as if she had walked out of his life.
Nelson stood there for a long time, the cold wind lifting his coat, amplifying his loneliness.
Callie walked for a long time, not knowing where to go. She thought of going to Reuben’s place but knew he would worry and question her if he saw her like this.
So she wandered around and ended up at Ipdite Temple instead of returning to the old mansion to see her grandfather.
Sienna was startled to see Callie. “Girl, why are you here all of a sudden? Oh my, you’ve lost so much weight.”
Callie forced a smile. “Auntie, can I stay here for a few days?”
“Of course you can!”
The next day, Nelson returned to Oconnor Group.
The employees hadn’t seen their executive in a long time. Seeing this man return with a commanding presence filled them with admiration and a sense of security.
It seemed that as long as Nelson was around, everything would be okay.
“Mr. Oconnor, welcome back.”
“Welcome back, Mr. Oconnor.”
“Mr. Oconnor…”
Nelson glanced around coldly and nodded slightly.
The senior staff waited for him in the top-floor office. One of them extended his hand first. “Mr. Oconnor, apart from Ahmad, you’re the only one who can turn things around now.”
Nelson’s smile was faint as he shook hands briefly before picking up a file prepared by his assistant on the desk. It detailed the current situation of the Ellison family.
The weather was bad today, and the weak light fell on the man’s handsome face, revealing a layer of undisguisable moisture in his eyes.
Some senior staff connected the dots and quickly guessed why Nelson had returned earlier than expected.
It was all because of Callie; there was no other reason.
