Seeing the girl running towards her, Jane’s face lit up with joy. She waved happily, “Hey, Agnes!” Her voice was gentle and pleasant.
“Aunt Jane!” The girl ran out excitedly, her eyes as clear and bright as water. “I’m sorry to keep you waiting. Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”
“I don’t have your phone number.” Jane’s voice was very pleasant. She took out her phone, “Shall we add each other on WhatsApp? It’ll be easier to contact you in the future.”
Agnes suddenly remembered that on the day of the engagement, everything was so rushed that she didn’t exchange phone numbers or add each other on WhatsApp.
So, she quickly took out her phone, “My mistake, my mistake. I’m sorry.”
Then Jane took her hand, “Come on, let’s get in the car first. We can save each other’s numbers later.”
Agnes was led to a luxury car not far away. “Where are we going?” she asked.
Jane stopped at the front passenger seat and opened the door happily. “How about we go for a meal? It’s already mealtime.”
Agnes was slightly taken aback and didn’t agree immediately. She thought to herself that Tom probably hadn’t told her about the fake engagement yet.
“What’s wrong?” Jane noticed something and asked curiously, “Do you have something to do now?”
“No, no.” The girl immediately smiled, “I was just a bit surprised.”
“What’s so surprising about it? My son is not in the country, so I took some time to visit my daughter-in-law and have a meal with her. Get in the car!” Jane was very happy as she helped Agnes into the car and closed the door for her.
She didn’t bring a driver today; she drove herself and even dressed up a bit. Her already good mood became even better.
Agnes sat in the front passenger seat of the luxury car, feeling completely dazed.
“What do you want to eat?” Jane’s voice was gentle and pleasant; she was simply too fond of Agnes.
After starting the car, she turned to Agnes and said, “Save my number now.”
“Okay, Aunt Jane. I’ll eat anything; I’m not picky.” She answered all the questions at once.
Jane gave her phone number and then drove her to a restaurant.
Agnes originally thought that Grandma and Uncle would be there too, so she was particularly nervous on the way. But when she learned it was just Aunt Jane and herself, she breathed a sigh of relief.
“Agnes, since you’re engaged to Tom, why don’t you call me what Tom does?” Jane asked with a smile. The more she looked at this girl, the more she liked her.
Agnes smiled but didn’t know how to respond for a moment.
Jane thought she was shy and couldn’t change how she addressed her right away but didn’t press further. “Come on, see what you’d like to eat.”
The restaurant was very high-end with a great ambiance.
“Anything is fine,” Agnes replied softly.
“How can anything be fine?” Jane took her seriously. “It’s rare for us to meet up. I heard you’ve been working overtime lately; you need to eat something good to replenish yourself.”
She even found that out?
Agnes suddenly feared that the fake engagement would be exposed through her slip-ups. She hoped Tom would explain everything to his family himself.
So during the meal, Agnes was very cautious.
The dishes were plentiful and carefully selected by Jane for her.
She originally thought she could leave after eating but didn’t expect Aunt Jane to insist on taking her shopping. Rather than accompanying her shopping, it felt more like buying clothes for Agnes.
“This isn’t right. I haven’t bought anything for you; how can I let you buy things for me?” Agnes didn’t want to accept it.
But Jane was too enthusiastic. “Go try it on; this outfit suits you very well. Today is all about buying things for you!”
“Aunt Jane…”
“Don’t call me that anymore; call me Mom.” Jane gently hugged her shoulders but seriously urged her to change how she addressed her.
