Kayla
The sun was almost up the horizon when I got up from the bed. I had been tossing and turning in the bed, all alone and I woke up with a headache.
Rubbing my forehead with my fingers, I looked around. I was in our chamber, all alone and there was no sign of Asher ever having come inside in the night. I had no idea what he did or where he slept last night. Maybe he had spent it with his mistress.
Frustration boiled inside me again and I got up and went to shower, took up my clothes, and stripped off my panties and bra before turning on the hot water. It worked wonders on my sleep-deprived frustrated self as I took my time cleaning myself and lathering soap.
Memories of Asher and his mistress came flooding my mind again, I shook my head, that was not what I would dwell on again. Thus, I angrily turned off the shower, wrapped myself up in a towel, and stepped out of the washroom. My hair was still wet so I took another towel to wrap it up around my hair.
As I walked out, I felt somebody was waiting for me. My heart lurched in my throat, waiting in anticipation that Asher had finally shown up.
But, it was one of the maids. My hope deflated faster than a balloon and I looked at her, my gaze dipped to her feet and traveled back to her hands “Can I help you?”
The young girl smiled, bowing her head in respect. She looked younger than me, with black hair that framed her heart-shaped face perfectly.
“Luna, I’m Lanny, and the Alpha has assigned me as your personal maid. I am so sorry I was supposed to be the one to prepare a warm bath but when I checked on you earlier, you were still sleeping and I didn’t want to disturb your sleep. Also, breakfast is ready, do you wish to come down to the dining area, or should I bring it here?” She supplied, not meeting my eyes.
“Thank you, Lanny. And please, call me Kayla. Don’bother bringing the food, I will go down for breakfast.”
” Okay, Lunn…. Kayla,” she did a little curtsy and scurried back outside the chamber.
I sighed, quickly put on a long blue velvet dress, and left my chamber, I walked down the long hallway of the castle and found my way to the dining hall, and to my surprise, Asher’s mistress was already there, having her breakfast and there was no Asher.
His absence was a good thing for me at the moment. I wouldn’t be able to bear seeing them together after seeing them like that last night. Elena’s heavy gaze pulled me out of my thoughts. I approached the table and sat on one of the chairs.
Her constant stare was still on me. I pulled my head up, my eyes meeting hers. There was this gleam on her face that reflected her hatred.
She regarded me with her brown eyes that showed nothing in their depth. She didn’t like me, and I didn’t like her either, but I barely had the strength to get into a fight with her. So, I shifted my gaze to my food instead.
” What the hell are you doing here?”
Her voice sounded far different from the pretentious cool and soft voice I was accustomed to hearing whenever she was with Asher.
” Obviously, I’m having breakfast,” I replied without looking at her.
“How is it that your supposed husband didn’t sleep in the same chamber with you on your wedding night? It’s obvious he doesn’t regard you.”
Her words drew my attention to her. “It’s none of your business. Why don’t you shut the hell up and eat.”
The mocking laughter she released afterward informed me she could see the anger imprinted on my face. She dropped the gold spoon on her hand and clasped her fingers together. Her face was colored with rage, a murderous flash of hate, and something I couldn’t decipher stalked her eyes.
“Asher doesn’t love or care about you, Bitch and he will never look your way as long as I’m in the picture. Isn’t it obvious already? On your wedding night, he left you alone and came crawling to me to satisfy him. That was supposed to be your right as his wife but he didn’t even consider you worthy of gracing his bed.”
My heart ached worse than ever, it was bruised, and her words stung a lot. I felt the rage within me intensify at words. Even though every word of her was right, I hated the damn tone she was using on me. The memories of them kissing each other came flooding and I dropped my spoon, holding her gaze. “Don’t get your hopes high. You are only an object he uses to warm his bed. I, on the other hand, I’m his wife, and the Luna of the pack.” What I said seemed to have stung her well but my own words also pierced me. They were all lies, and I knew it. I was nothing to Asher. I meant absolutely nothing to him.
Elena straightened her back, her eyes had a vicious glint in them, and she played with a loose strand of her hair. “I have told you, Kayla, you can never replace me in his life. He chose me after the ugly brutal death of his mate. He had always confided in me, even shared his darkest secret. And you think he will throw all that away because of you. You must be the greatest joker of the century.” She taunted.
I couldn’t stay here and listen to any more of this. I got up from the chair and walked out of the dining hall. I could hear her laughing behind me as I hastened to my chamber. I was so angry that it clouded my heart and my vision. I didn’t know what had me like this whether it was her confession about fucking Asher or her words about knowing his darkest secret.
I sighed, clasping my hands together, it seemed like there was a hidden secret surrounding Asher and his dead mate. I made a mental note to find out more about Asher and uncover this darkest secret.
But how would I be able to achieve that?
