The CEO mentioned work, so Cedric could only nod. “Alright then, Mr. Walters, thank you!”
They said they would discuss work, but once they sat down, neither had the heart for it. What Cedric most wanted to know was whether his boss planned to continue pursuing Rosalind or return to Northville tomorrow. He needed to book the plane tickets in advance. However, Cedric didn’t ask directly because he thought Mr. Walters might not have made up his mind yet. Better to let him think it over.
“Uh, Mr. Walters, about the Wayer City project…”
“Do you think I’m being foolish?”
Cedric had tried to break the ice, but Ulric spoke first. After a moment’s thought, he sighed.
“Mr. Walters, those who are hurt are often the ones who care deeply.”
“So she didn’t care about me.”
Cedric was afraid of saying the wrong thing; nodding or shaking his head both seemed inappropriate.
Ulric pulled at his thin lips, poured himself a glass of wine, and drank it down in one gulp. “I feel like I’m drinking poison to quench my thirst. I want to see her more, but logic tells me not to. Yet every time, my instinct is to chase after her without giving myself time to think rationally.”
From childhood until now, only Rosalind could make him lose all reason. He understood everything in theory but couldn’t put it into practice.
“Mr. Walters, Taylor has started a new life. You should move on too.”
“Yes, yes, I should move on too.” When had he ever not wanted to move on?
Cedric poured himself a glass of wine and smiled. “Mr. Walters, this is actually the first time we’ve had a private drink together.”
“Yes, the company has relied on you a lot over the years.”
Cedric shook his head with a smile. “No, it’s because of your guidance that I am where I am today! That’s why I’ve never thought about leaving W Group or you.”
Ulric didn’t understand why Cedric brought this up but said nothing and continued drinking.
“Mr. Walters, you’re really great, both professionally and personally! That’s why I think you should give yourself a break and find a relationship that brings you happiness-a partner who can grow with you! I used to think Taylor was that person because you smiled the most when you were with her. But now… I don’t think she is anymore.”
Though he didn’t know the specifics, Cedric could see his boss’s frustration and repeated disappointments clearly.
Ulric remained silent and kept drinking.
Cedric knew that nothing he said would help; Ulric had to come to terms with it himself. So he just kept him company, drinking glass after glass.
In the end, the food was barely touched while the bottles were emptied.
“Mr. Walters, you should rest early! Tomorrow… let’s go back to Northville?”
Ulric paused for a moment and nodded. “Alright.”
He watched Cedric leave and then supported his slightly drunken body into the bathroom to wash up before lying down on the bed. But no matter how much he tossed and turned, sleep wouldn’t come.
He wondered if Rosalind had found the child she cared about…
Feeling frustrated, he took out his phone to check for any news and saw a photo Johnny had sent via Whatsapp at first glance.
With a tap of his slender finger, an innocent child’s face appeared on the screen-
Ulric’s handsome face changed instantly; his pupils contracted involuntarily!
This child… looked so much like him.
The eyebrows, the corners of the mouth, those eyes-an exact replica of his own face!
But how could he have a child? He had only ever been with Rosalind…
