###Chapter 23

Jake’s POV
I drew in a clear breath as I walked out of the conference room, my mind pondering over everything that had been discussed inside. I almost wanted to tell John about the three Werewolves I had battled in the woods, but for some unknown reasons, I didn’t.
I needed to clear my head, and for at that point, there was only one way to do that the open air, and a female’s body. I knew just the right one to visit.
Diane was sitting by her window when the I walked in. She had once been a Luna of another pack, but was rejected by her mate when he caught her in the arms of another.
“What can I say my mother was a whore, I’m no different,” she had said to me as she narrated her story, blowing out smoke from her mouth, a thin cigarette held between her fore and middle finger.
That had been three years ago when she had first settled in our pack, and until now, she was still one of my favorites, always at my beck and call whenever I needed someone to ease off with.
“It’s been a while,” she said casually when she turned her head and saw me. “I was beginning to think you had tired of me that maybe it was time for me to move on to a new pack.”
I shrugged, and then let out a wry smile. “Why would you say that?”
“Ever since you came in with that rejected werewolf, she’s been the only one you’ve been looking at. For a moment, I was beginning to think that I’m no longer needed.”
“Oh come on, Diane,” I twisted my face. We both know I’m not the only male warming your bed. It’s obvious you don’t even miss me,”
I knew Diane took well to know that she was only saying all of that because she was jealous. If she moved to another pack, it would be because she had a chance of reclaiming her position as Luna, and not because she was heartbroken by my neglect.
“You think so? Now I know I don’t belong here,” Diane shrugged.
“No one is stopping you from leaving Diane, but while you’re still here, get over here.” I knew exactly the right buttons to push to get her to do my biddings.
She didn’t need to be told twice. She was already all over me in an instance, like I had used some kind of magical spell on her.
I found himself thinking of Reyna and her beautiful green eyes as our lips settled for a kiss. Image of I and Reyna kissing replayed in my head, and I suddenly began to miss her.

Diane’s POV
“You have a lot on your mind today Jake,” I observed languidly after they were done. “I already know you are getting tired of me, but today well after today, I better be looking for a new pack.”
Jake shrugged as a casual smile tugged at the bottom of his lip. He must have felt I was bluffing, for some reason, I had grown too attached to him to want to leave he too, knew that very well.
“It’s Reyna right? She’s the reason you seem to be distracted, isn’t it?” I asked, reaching out for a cigarette which I had kept close by. I offered him one and he rejected it. “I’m good,” he said.
“You’re in love with Reyna aren’t you? You wish she was the one who was here in your arms tonight?” I probed further.
I was beginning to hate Reyna, seeing she was already posing a threat to my relationship with Jake. Even if I knew Jake wasn’t my mate, I still didn’t want to share him with anyone, especially not with someone who just came into the pack.
Jake laughed,”Far from it. She’s not even my type,”
There was something awkward with the way he laughed. I could see through him. He was lying and it was obvious.
“So, is she staying?” I asked. I was there the other day when she and the other lady who had lost her family to the Lycans’ attack were asked to prove that they were indeed werewolves. I had seen how pathetic she had been while trying to convince everyone that she was indeed one of us.
I couldn’t help but wish that lord Bernard had been able to convince Alpha John to make her leave the pack. That was how it should have been since she wasn’t able to convince the entire pack that she was a werewolf. But for some reasons, even Lord Bernard had overlooked her inabilities, and had allowed her to continue staying with the rest of the pack.
“Why do you ask if she’s staying?” Jake in turn asked, pretending not to know why I was asking.
That was one of the things I hated about Jake. He was never predictable. One minute he was the nicest guy in the world, and the next, he was a total jerk.
If not for his good looks and sexual appeal, I’m not sure he’d have any friends.
“Come on Jake, she’s not one of us. What if she’s a spy? What if she’s representing another powerful pack? We both know, it’s not ideal to have a stranger admitted into a pack without a thorough confirmation, much more a non werewolf.”
Jake shrugged and got to his feet. Whatever the case was, he wasn’t buying what I was saying. It would be the first time I would see Jake act so indifferent to me while trying to point out something worth considering to him.
“It’s always easier for you to suspect people than trust them. Sometimes I wonder if you are always like that.” Jake’s words stung.
Sighing, I dragged a long draw from my cigarette then flung my butt to the floor.
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” I gave him a hard piercing gaze. “See you some other time,” I shut the door behind me.
“Phew!” I was already regretting why I couldn’t say no to him earlier.
