Naomi
I opened the front door to see my brother resting idly on his car, twirling his car keys around his index finger.
“You girls aren’t done yet?”
I heard a deep voice say and shifted my gaze to the west angle of the car to know who had spoken. Adam.
What was he doing here?
Oh my. My brother…that traitor. I cussed, glaring at Timothy who shrugged his shoulders.
How would I give Maya a heads up now?
“Hello Naomi. You are looking beautiful.” Adam said, staring at me with mild admiration. He probably hadn’t expected me to clean up so fine.
I smiled, unable to help it. Compliments always felt good.
“Hello Adam. Thanks for the compliment. You are not looking bad yourself. Did you tell Maya that you were coming?”
I stepped down the short stairs, making my way to the duo.
“I don’t think so.” Adam replied, throwing a wink at me which Timothy saw and huffed. My brother looked the other way, tapping his feet on the floor. He was obviously impatient.
“Stop hitting on my sister in front of me.” He said to Adam, in a bid to make small talk and pass time.
“Dude, chill. I was just complimenting her. Besides, She’s not complaining.” Adam replied, shrugging his shoulders.
I smiled as I heard the banter between the two guys. It pleased me that even my brother had found me beautiful. Of course, Timothy being Timothy, hadn’t said it openly, but she knew.
“Where’s Maya?” Adam asked me, his eyes darting between me and the front door.
“She will be joining us soon.” I replied. “Just some finishing touches.. and she will be here.”
“And how long will that take? The party has already started.” Timothy whined, taking a pause when Adam glared at him.
“Seriously?” Timothy cussed, before turning aside and kicking the tires of the car.
I chuckled softly. My brother could be a baby sometimes.
“Relax Tim. She will soon be here.” I promised, swiveling when I got to the car, such that my back relaxed on the car as we waited for Maya.
“So, how big is the party?” I asked after a few minutes. I was beginning to wonder too what Maya was doing inside the room. How hard could wearing shoes be?
“Quite big. It turned out to be bigger than I had expected. It seems a lot of people want to witness Maya’s send forth. Your parents are already there.” Adam stated, getting away from the car, turning to face Timothy and I, with his hands in his front pockets.
“Of course..” Timothy mused. “But we need to…” He was saying, before a sight cut him short.
“Is that Maya?” He muttered, his eyes widening; causing Adam to look up to the front porch of our house.
I smirked when he added: “Bless me.”
Finally.
__________
Adam dropped another awe-stricken look on Maya as he drove towards the party venue, negligent of the amusement dancing on my face, and the skeptical one on Timothy and Ben’s face. Ben was one of Adam’s friends. We had picked him up on the way.
“Adam honey, drive..” Maya said, batting her eyelashes at a drooling Adam whom I thought looked so dashing in a three piece suit.
I smiled, as he gulped nothing, before looking ahead.
Go girl! Get him!
Taking a glimpse at the rearview mirror, I gave her a thumbs up when our gazes met, chuckling softly when she blushed beet red. My friend was in love, and I was happy for her. If only this had happened earlier…
“You okay?” I heard Timothy whisper into my ear. My brother could be a meanie sometimes, but I know he cared for me specially. I, however, shrugged my shoulders in response. I won’t be okay when Maya leaves, and he knew it.
I turned aside to tell him that, but he was staring at Maya blankly, as she chatted with Adam over mundane things. I ignored the camaraderie between the lovers, and focused on the pitiful look on my brother’s face.
He had seen Adam drooling when Maya had revealed herself earlier. He had seen the love shining in the Prince’s eyes, right before Maya walked into his arms.
And I knew that if the opportunity presented itself again, that he should have Maya, he would never say no.
Too late. Adam was first.
Stupid boy! Maya and I would have been in-laws.
My attention was snapped when I felt a hand over mine. Instantly my gaze zapped to Ben who gave me a stupid wink.
For the sake of his life, I gently pushed the offending palm away from mine. Timothy would kill him otherwise.
Ben piqued an eyebrow. I shook my head. The only boy I was interested in was Noah.
“Adam!!” Maya and Timothy called out when the Prince almost hit a car that had just passed by us. Where was his mind?
“I’m sorry.”
“What are you thinking about? Do you want an accident?” Timothy asked him, incredulity ringing in his voice..
“I’m sorry.” Adam repeated, to our surprise, looking ahead. I noticed then that we were almost at the party venue. At long last.
“But..” Maya suddenly said, wanting to know what had taken her man’s mind off the road.
“I was thinking of you.” Adam interrupted, causing us-the fellows at the back seat-to groan out loudly.
