Chapter 72
Ava left the office immediately, as she was not comfortable with the way things were playing out between her and her mate, alpha Damon. She took a deep breath as she banged her office door and walked hastily out of the building. Not long after, she arrived home and made her way to her closet to undress and change into something lighter than what she was wearing. Her mind wandered off to the elongated eye contact between her and Alpha Damon when he came to return her phone. “Why was he staring so deep into my eyes?” She asked herself as she changed slowly.
She stood there in the room, looking in a particular direction as different thoughts ran through her mind. “He did not show the hate and resentment as he did on the day that he knew that I was pregnant.” She thought as she began to walk slowly to her bed and sat at the edge of the bed, placing a hand on her baby bump. She took a deep breath as she rubbed her belly in a circular pattern. “I am scared of letting your father know about you. I just want to protect you.” She whispered as if she were talking to her baby physically.
She was suddenly jolted by the sound of her phone as it rang, and she picked up her phone to see who was calling her. “Mika!” She said in a low tone as she picked up the call and placed it over her ear to talk.
“Hello, Mika. What’s going on?” She asked and took a deep breath as she waited for her to respond.
“I’m good. How are you?” She asked, and Ava nodded her head as if she could see her do it.
“I am fine. I just left the office. I am home. Are you done?” Ava said in a low tone as she walked away from the side of the bed, pacing around the room slowly.
“Yes. I am done. Usual spot or… another place in mind.” She asked, and Ava kept mute for a moment as she thought of the response to give. “I can’t go to the lake. It gives me a sense that alpha Damon is present and watching me.” She thought for a while before heaving a heavy sigh to talk.
“No. I don’t feel like going to the lake. It’s becoming scary and uncomfortable. Seems other people had discovered that place, and also I keep catching alpha Damon’s scent there as if he were, there present with us.” She explained and there was a mistake of silence over the phone as both ladies did not utter a single word to each other.
“I get that. Now you will feel a lot better. You have taken a leave already, and that should keep him away from you for the time being. You would get yourself together within this period.” She said Ava only nodded her head in agreement to what she had said, but there still exists a doubt in her heart that she was going to be able to handle being without alpha Damon for the period of time that he had given her.
“Yeah, you are right. We can’t keep talking over the phone. Are you coming over?” Ava asked sharply, and she already knew the answer that she was going to get, so it did not surprise her.
“Yes. Of course. I am on my way.” She said, and Ava halted her steps, walking back to the edge of the bed to sit down while heaving a sigh.
“Okay. You are making dinner. I have some wild cravings.” Ava said and Mika chuckled, ending the call abruptly, and Ava tossed the phone over to the other side of her bed. She walked out of her room slowly to the living, room but not for long as she returned to her bedroom to lie down and scroll through her phone. She took a deep breath as she continued to scroll through her phone, trying to forget what had happened earlier between alpha Damon and her.
“Perhaps if I told Mika about it, I would not think about it as frequently as I do now.” She thought for a while before she dialed Mika’s contact. It rang several times, but she did not pick up the call. “Perhaps she is close to this place. But she should have picked, as she did not know why I was calling. What if I was experiencing some complications?” She asked herself as she made a frown on her face. Not long after, she heard the doorbell ring, and she walked out reluctantly to get the door.
“Why are you frowning? Are you not happy to see me?” Mika asked, making a scrunching face as she did not understand the reason for Ava frowning at her. Ava only shook her head, not responding to the earlier question that Mika had asked.
“Ava. Talk to me.” She said, and Ava stopped walking, folding her hand across her chest. She gave Mika a stern look for a moment, shaking her head before she talked.
“What if I had slumped and had issues? Was that how you would have ignored my calls?” Ava asked, and Mika’s eyes went wide as she moved closer to Ava to embrace her. She knew it was the hormones that were causing her to act that way, so she had to follow her up like that.
“I am sorry. I was already here when you called. Next time I would pick up the call and let you know that I am here.” She said, trying to get Ava to laugh, but she only smiled, and they walked into her room.
“So how did you go at the office? Any drama?” Mika asked and Ava had the urge to burst wide open and explain the whole incident to Mika, but she hesitated at first as she did not want Mika to know that she was no longer angry at her.
“I said I was sorry. Okay… to make it up to you, I will make dinner.” She said and Ava chuckled, arranging herself on the edge of the bed before she talked.
“You wouldn’t believe what happened at the office today.” She said, and Mika’s face pulled together to make a scrunching face.
“What happened?” She asked, and Ava took a deep breath, trying to arrange the thoughts in her head before she talked.
“Before I got to the office today, he already prepared a letter, granting me leave for over twelve months,” Ava said, and Mika gasped in shock as she heard what Ava had just said.
“You don’t mean it.” She said, and Ava nodded her head before she talked.
“Yes. I was just as shocked as you are. I stood there in front of him, dumbfounded. I did not know what to say to him. So I asked him if I could leave immediately or stay until the end of the day. Guess what he told me.” Ava said, tilting her head away from Mika for a moment before she brought it back, Mika only shook her head but did not say a word.
“He said the ball was in my court. If I wanted to stay, fine. If I wanted to leave, that’s on me. I was shocked the more. I never expected him to do that, honestly.” Ava said and just as she landed, Mika cleared her throat to talk.
“Wait, don’t tell me that you are already giving in to all these tricks because you clearly did not leave immediately. What kept you waiting?” Mika asked and Ava shook her head slowly.
“No, how can I fall for that?” Ava asked in a low tone, but she did not expect a reply from her at all.
“So what kept you waiting in the office?” Mika asked and focused her gaze on Ava as she waited anxiously for her to talk.
“I unknowingly left my phone in his office,” Ava said and Mika’s eyes went wide as she heard what Ava had just said.
“Tell me he did not kiss you, please,” Mika said as she placed both hands over her mouth as if she were trying to plead.
“Nah. He didn’t. But something happened.” Ava said in a low tone as she tilted her head away from Mika.
“What did he do? He tried to have sex?” Mika asked and Ava burst into laughter as she was amused by the kind of question she was getting from Mika.
“No! He did none of that. Why do you keep thinking about these things?” She asked, and Mika gestured, widening her hands to signify that she did not know.
“Okay. When I left my phone in his office, I wanted to go and pick it up from there. I guess that was the time you were calling, and I did not pick up.” Ava explained, gesturing every word that came out of her mouth.
“Oh. I see.” Mika said and Ava nodded before she continued to talk.
“Yes. As I opened my door to go and grab the phone from his office, I met him standing in front of mine.” Ava explained, and she took a deep breath, chuckling as everything began to play in her head again like a movie that she had watched before.
“What was he trying to do?” Mika asked and Ava raised both shoulders up and dropped it rapidly.
“Perhaps he was trying to return the phone. As I grabbed my phone from him, he held my hand, and we stared into each other’s eyes for a moment. I started to feel this kind of strange connection between us that I never felt. Just then your call came in and we both jolted.” Ava explained.
“Thank goodness I called. Who knows what might have happened? We need to get your hormones in check. There is no connection.” She said rapidly and they both burst into laughter.
