Chapter 70
Ava stood there, glaring at the letter as she could not utter a single word. She opened her mouth to talk, but no words came out of her mouth. She only took a deep breath as her eyes darted between the letter and Alpha Damon.
“How did he know what I was about to ask for?” She asked herself as she finally cleared her throat to talk.
“Uhm… How did you know what he wanted to ask for?” She asked, and he raised his head from the computer screen to give her a quiet look before he inhaled deeply to talk.
“I mean, it’s only right that I allow you some time to go and take care of yourself and your growing baby.” He said, and she felt her heart skipped a beat. She still did not know what to say, and Alpha Damon tilted his head back to look at the computer screen to continue his work. Ava did not know what else to do, either to go back to her office or say thank you to Alpha Damon. She did not know what to do.
“You can go. I think that’s all it is there anything else that you want?” He asked, and she shook her head rapidly as she took a few steps backward, not uttering a single word. She held the doorknob and tilted it to open the door but then, a thought suddenly popped up in her mind.
“Uhm… Do I need to complete the day or does the leave start tomorrow?” She asked in a low tone as she slowly tilted her head to look at alpha Damon who was still looking at his screen before he tilted his head to look at her.
“It’s up to you to decide what you want to do. You can choose to leave now or stay until the closing hour. Your choice.” He said, and she only nodded her head rapidly, not uttering a single word, before walking out of the office and closing the door.
She walked slowly to her office with her mind drenched in thought as she did not know what was going on. “Why the sudden change in his attitude?” She asked herself as she leaned against her door. “I won’t let this get to me at all. I need to get away from him as far as I can.” She thought as she came off the door and walked rapidly to her desk to pack her things.
“Perhaps I should call Mika to meet up.” She thought but remembered that she might be at work too, so she decided to relax a bit to think things through. As she sat in her swirling chair, her mind wandered off to the memories she made with alpha Damon and how things started to get sour between them. She heaved a sigh as she remembered her early life with Alpha Jude as well but scoffed as she remembered that Alpha Jude thought he owned the child.
“Pathetic.” She said, and suddenly, she recalled that she had said that she was going to call Alpha Jude back. She contemplated on whether to call him or just leave it until when she was home.
“Where is my phone, though?” She asked herself as she began to look for it all over the place but could not find it. She took a deep breath as she remembered that she was at Alpha Damon’s office earlier, and she might have left it there.
“I hope not. I don’t want to face him again.” She thought and scoffed as she leaned backward, placing a hand on her forehead.
She took her bag and started to ransack her bag in search of her phone but could still not find it in it. Her heart raced faster as the only option she could think of was Alpha Damon’s office.
“I cannot go back there. Not now. Not ever. I don’t want to see him or even talk to him again. I don’t want him inside my head. I just want to live freely, grow this baby until he is out, and have my peace. Nothing more.” She thought as she swirled to the right and back to the left in a repeated manner. She could not help but scoff, as she did not know how to go about it.
“I don’t have a choice.” She thought as she stood up from her chair and walked slowly to the door but halted immediately she placed her hand on the knob, taking a deep breath before she tilted the knob to open the door. As she just opened the door, she was shocked by the sight of the person who stood in front of her. “Alpha Damon.” Her heart skipped a beat. He seemed to have been standing there for a while too as he held the doorknob too.
“Oh. You left your phone and it was ringing. I brought it to you.” He said in a sharp tone as he stared directly into her eyes.
“Oh, sure. Thank you.” She said in a low tone her voice slightly above a whisper. She stretched her hand slowly to grab her phone from him and gave her but held her hand as she wanted to retract her hand. She paused for a moment, tilting her head to look at him in the eyes.
They stayed in that position for a moment as both of them did not utter a single word to each other. They were jolted from their reverie when her phone suddenly started to buzz.
“Oh. Sorry…. Enjoy your maternal period.” He said sharply and walked out of that place to her office. Her heart raced faster as she walked into her office, banging the door. The event played in her head all over again as she slowly sat on her chair.
“What was he trying to do? Why was he staring deep into my eyes?” She asked herself. “It felt like he was searching through my soul. If only I knew what was going through his mind at that moment.” She thought.
She raised her phone to check her screen, trying to find out who called her, and then she saw that it was Mika. Her heart raced as she took away her gaze from her phone for a while. The whole incident replayed in her mind like a movie that she had watched before. Just then, she decided to call Mika back to find out why she had called, even if she had a hint that it was because of what they had discussed yesterday.
“Hey! Mika. What’s up with you.” She said sharply to erase any form of suspicion in her voice. “She cannot know that I am not okay. At least not now.” She thought as she waited for her to reply.
“You got me really worried. I have been trying to reach you, but you were not picking up. You even had me thinking that he had gone physical with you.” Mika said, and all Ava could do was chuckle at what Mika was saying.
“Are you laughing at me?” Mika asked, and she could sense the anger in her tone, causing Ava to shake her head repeatedly as if Mika were there to see her.
“No. Not at all. How can I laugh at such an important issue? I can’t possibly do that.” Ava said in her defense as she leaned backward and swirled around on her chair.
“So, you mind explaining why you had me all worried about you? Why weren’t you picking up my calls?” She asked, and Ava stopped swirling, taking a deep breath as she thought of what to say to her friend. There was a moment of silence over the phone as she did not what to tell her and Mika heaved a sigh before she talked.
“He did not grant you the request, did he?” Mika asked suddenly, and Ava was forced to reply.
“No, not at all. That’s not it. He did grant me the leave.” She responded sharply in his defense as she leaned forward to place her hands on her desk. “What can I think of?” She asked herself as she took a deep breath.
“Is there something you are not telling me because you don’t sound too straightforward with me,” Mika said, and Ava’s heart skipped a beat as she heard what Mika had just said.
“It’s kind of a long story. I had wanted to call you earlier, but I did not want to disturb you.” Ava said, and the silence that followed was grave as both of them kept mute.
“I will explain in detail when we see. But for now, I am totally fine, and I got my leave from work.” Ava said and beamed a smile as if Mika could see her.
“Okay. I will call you u when you when I am done. I need to finish with something.” Ava said and heaved a sigh as she brought the phone off her ears.
Different thoughts reeled in her mind as she sat there on her chair. “What could be going on in his mind? Was he trying to mess with my head? No, I am not giving him any chance to take over my thoughts.” She thought, taking a deep breath to clear her mind.
She had thought to go and tell Alpha Damon that she was leaving but decided to kick against it as she did not want a repetition of what had happened earlier to happen again. Ava packed her stuff and walked out of the office, looking around for a moment as though it were going to take a while before she came back if at all she was.
