Chapter 49
Ava retched as she threw up all the contents of her stomach into the toilet bowl. This has become a normal phenomenon for the past few days.
While it was tiring and gut-wrenching, she knew it was part of this journey to becoming a mother.
Resting on her knees, she tied her hair back and sat for a few minutes to make sure she had everything out.
The past few weeks had been a hectic one for her, with the morning sickness coming in full force and not responding to the medications she was given, having to deal with the slight discomforts that came with it.
She had a little bump now, barely noticeable, but she could see it. She had developed the habit of absentmindedly rubbing it, and sometimes she even caught herself talking to it.
Just three months far along, and Ava could feel a strong connection with her child, she hoped it would turn out to be a boy. She had always wanted to know what it would feel like to raise a strong and fearless boy child.
Getting up off the floor after sitting for a few min and not puking, she decided to get ready for work. Brushing her teeth.
She had switched from her usual minty one because she could not stand the smell of it, and this new one she got was too bitter for her liking.
Her reflection in the mirror scared her a little, but Ava knew just a few swatches of her makeup brushes would make her look like a human again.
Shorter showers were her thing now, quite strange and inexplicable, but it’s what she had been feeling.
Standing in front of her closet, she contemplated what to wear.
Still very anxious about her little barely there bump being noticed, she had stuck to wearing rather flair and free dresses to hide it as much as she could, for the moment.
The office had been busier than usual as alpha Damon had been occupied with some job, something that had to do with the West Woods northern barn, which was one of their biggest.
So she understood why it meant so much to him and why he was working his butt off to put it back together while leaving her to handle their initial project.
Ava was proud of how far she had gone with it, making sure to speed things up but at the same time make sure they were done perfectly.
In a few weeks, the project would be done, and she would be out of there, a free woman. Alpha Jude will have his land, and she would not have to deal with coming to West Wood every day in her condition.
Missing alpha Damon would be inevitable, but she could live with it, especially now that she knew where his head and heart were at, with Princess.
Deciding on a brown maxi skirt and a sweater that covered her up just enough to not show any suspicious bumps, she paired it with some boots and knew she was good to go.
She could not risk anyone finding out about her pregnancy. Words travel like wildfire and in no time it was certain to reach alpha Damon’s ears, and then she would have all these questions to answer.
Questions that would have very obvious answers. Who was the father of the child, and why had she been hiding it?
Walking out of the house, she headed for her car, she glanced at Alpha Jude’s study as she walked by. He was not in, and she shrugged as she walked on.
He had been acting quite strange, and she felt some weird energy from him, but she had promised herself a long time ago to not be found tangled in his or anyone else’s bad energy.
Her phone went off just as she got into the car, and she glanced at it, it was her alarm. Groaning, she palmed her face, how could she have forgotten that she had an appointment with her doctor?
She was not exactly dressed for the occasion, but since she was already out of the house, Ava proceeded to the hospital.
Driving as slowly as possible for a pregnant woman, occasionally her hands rubbed against her little bump as she hummed a tune she did not even recognize.
The hospital building stared at her, and she gulped down the lump of anxiety that tore at her throat. No wonder, women came to these things with their significant others. It was nerve-wracking just as much as it was exciting.
Taking a deep breath and letting it out after three seconds, letting out a long exhale to calm her anxious mind.
The walk to her doctor’s office was a short one, but she took gradual, anxious steps, making it seem longer than it was.
Knocking lightly on the door, she stepped aside as she waited for it to open. “Hello Ava” the doctor welcomed her with a smile, “you are a little behind schedule,” she pointed out as she led her to the bed at the side of the room.
Ava always wondered if health workers and doctors smiled because they were genuinely glad to see patients, or if it was just part of their job.
Welcoming people with a smile and so much politeness, even considering how draining their jobs are.
“I am so sorry, I almost forgot about today.” Ava apologized as she sat at the edge of the bed and waited for instructions.
“Uhm, if you could just lay down right here so we can get started.” The doctor said very nicely, making Ava follow her instructions as diligently as she could.
Kicking off her shoes, Ava laid back on the bed, which was slightly uncomfortable. But she knew she would not be on there for long, so she tolerated the harsh leather on her back.
Pulling her shirt up to reveal her small bump, Ava rubbed and gave it a small pat, a smile painted on her lips as she waited for the doctors’ next orders.
“I am just going to apply this gel and then see how the baby is doing.” The doctor said clearly, seeking permission to go ahead.
“Okay,” was all Ava said as she waited for the application. Wincing as the cold fluid touched her skin.
“Sorry, it is a little too cold.” The doctor said as she did her job, smearing the gel all around her stomach. It became comfortably soothing as she did, and Ava held back a sigh of relief.
“There it is.” The doctor pointed a lean, gloved finger at what looked like a moving mass on the monitor, while she moved what looked like some sort of mouse around her stomach.
Ava felt her heart leap, that moving mass was her child, her baby, and it was in her. Her child, she was going to be a mother.
She could not help the tears of joy that ran down the side of her face. Completely overwhelmed by the feeling of being able to not only birth but also love a child.
Being a mother was one experience she had waited to have all her life, and finally, it was here, maybe not in the best of circumstances, but she knew she would love and cherish this being.
“Are you alright, miss?” The doctor asked, clearly not shocked by her reaction, Ava could tell she was used to seeing women get like this.
“Yes, yes I am fine…it’s just, I am just being emotional that’s all,” Ava answered, stumbling upon her words, and trying to wipe off the tears at the corners of her eyes.
“I understand,” the doctor said rather kindly, making Ava feel very comfortable to be this vulnerable in front of her.
Ava could not contain the joy that filled her heart, she was going to be a mother to a beautiful baby boy, or girl. She did not know which yet, but she knew she would love either as much.
“Is it a boy or girl?” Ava asked curiously, staring at the doctor who seemed to be busy scribbling something on her big ass, not a pad.
“It is still too early to know just yet, you can come back for that when you are six months along.” The doctor said with a smile that suggested she could sense Ava’s curiosity.
“First time mum?” She asked the obvious question.
“Yes,” Ava could not help the excitement in her voice and the smile on her face.
“All done.” The doctor said after she wiped the gel off her stomach with a wet wipe. “That is all for now, I will prescribe some vitamins and I will say this again,”
“take as much rest as possible but do not limit yourself, do a few exercises if you can.” The doctor said as she helped Ava off the bed. Ava walked out feeling a sense of fulfillment and a wide smile stretching her lips.
