Just as Agnes’s figure was about to disappear at the gate of the community, and just as Tom was about to tell Jeffery to start the car, Ansel suddenly appeared out of nowhere, holding a bouquet of roses, and jumped right behind Agnes! He covered her eyes with his hands, stopping her in her tracks.
This scene caught Tom Fritz’s eye. His gaze was deep and thoughtful. Jeffery saw it too and was shocked, wondering what was happening. He looked at his master, who seemed indifferent, making Jeffery even more puzzled.
Tom withdrew his gaze and gently said to Jeffery, “Start the car.”
His tone showed no emotional change. Although Jeffery didn’t understand what had happened, he started the car, feeling extremely shocked. Miss Campell had just gotten engaged to his master, and now this…
His master’s attitude was also puzzling; was it a resigned acceptance? At the gate of the community, Agnes finally broke free from Ansel’s embrace and angrily glared at him.
“Ansel! What are you doing?”
Ansel looked at his hand in surprise; there were tears on it! “You’re crying?” he asked worriedly.
“Bubu, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?”
Agnes didn’t have time to answer his questions and looked towards the parking area where the Volvo was no longer there. Her heart sank with frustration. Did Tom see Ansel hugging her from behind? Even though she had nothing to do with Tom anymore, she still didn’t want him to see this scene.
“Bubu, what’s wrong?” Ansel suddenly became serious.
“What are you looking at? Why are you crying?” He was genuinely concerned.
The girl turned and walked back into the community without responding to him, feeling utterly miserable.
“Hey! What’s wrong? Agnes!” Ansel was really anxious and quickly followed her with the roses.
“Don’t be angry! I wanted to surprise you! I didn’t know you were in a bad mood!”
He grabbed her arm, stopping her again.
“Ansel, what are you doing?” Agnes asked with disgust as she looked at the roses in his hand.
“Don’t you understand what I mean?”
“I’m giving you flowers to cheer you up! It’s just a bouquet; please don’t overinterpret it.”
“I’m a bit tired; can you let me be quiet for a while?” Agnes wanted to cry; she felt terrible but remained polite.
“Please don’t disturb me, thank you.”
She didn’t want to anger him either.
“Agnes!”
“Ansel, I’m begging you!”
Seeing the girl stop and look back with tears in her eyes, Ansel was scared. He was genuinely worried but saw an unprecedented seriousness and solemnity in her expression.
“Okay, okay, I won’t follow you or disturb you. Don’t cry.”
Ansel took two steps back with the roses.
“You go rest; stay quiet for a while. I’ll come back later.”
Agnes withdrew her gaze and walked into the community. Ansel did not follow.
In the Volvo heading to the airport, Jeffery remained puzzled but didn’t ask anything. After careful consideration, Tom Fritz spoke up to avoid any misunderstanding.
“Jeffery, Miss Campell and I are only pretending to be engaged.”
Jeffery was even more shocked by this revelation but stayed silent.
Tom continued, “Today her parents were also hired for money. The reason is simple: I don’t want to marry Lisa as arranged and don’t want to disappoint my grandmother.”
Jeffery drove while processing this information-no wonder he had told Miss Campell earlier that once things stabilized on his end, he would quickly reveal the truth to avoid causing her any more trouble.
Jeffery hadn’t understood then but now everything made sense.
“But… how long can you keep such a big secret?” Tom glanced at him with genuine concern.
A lie sometimes requires countless other lies to sustain it.
