Alpha Rolan’s POV
“Where did you find this?” I bellowed at the guards. It was a fox that had been totally skinned. The death must have been a gruesome one, and my heart hurt at the mere thought of it.
Griffin and Caleb arrived shortly after I called them, and we all stood in my office deliberating on whom the threat could be from. Attached to the animal was a note that simply read:
AN EYE FOR AN EYE
A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.
“Every of the Pack’s threats that I know of has been taken care of. I could possibly not imagine who would send such a gory message to the king.” Caleb said.
“Have you checked all the footage from the CCTV last night? Anyone suspicious around?” I asked, feeling greatly worried considering that Pandora just had her babies. I was as sleep-starved as you can imagine a new father would, making sure that Pandora got enough rest.
“Everything has been wiped clean. Who do you think would have done this? Have you contacted the Technical institute? Tell them to find a solution to the deleted footage before noon tomorrow. Have the director sent to my office.” I rambled on, my mind in a total frenzy.
“Alright Alpha,” Griffin answered and left my office with Caleb tailing him.
“Caleb, wait. I want to talk to you. The rest of you can leave.” I said and sat down for the first time since the guards had come to inform me about the gory sight.
“Alpha…”
“I know you have been seeing Ashley. What did you notice? I don’t mean to suspect her or anything, but she’s the only one who had access to my bedroom where the universal key is kept. Last night, I saw the two of you go into the Surveillance room, which is the only room without a camera in it.” I said carefully, watching his eyes dart around nervously.
“Alpha, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to keep it a secret from anyone. Ashley and I are mates and occasionally, we do a little sneaking around. Nothing more than that. We left the Surveillance room shortly after we entered, where we only kissed for a few minutes before she asked that we go somewhere else using the back door.” He explained.
Even though I had my doubts about Caleb’s focus ever since he met Ashley, I knew he was not one to lie. I feared that Ashley was merely using him for what I couldn’t lay my fingers on yet, but I made up my mind I was not going to hold back from finding out who was threatening me.
“It is a compromising position that we both are in now. You and Ashley are the prime suspects in this case. I do not want you to take this the wrong way, which was why I called you to speak to you. As soon as you step out of this door, there will be officers waiting to take you to the Remand Centre. I’ll find a way around Ashley, but I can’t seem to place what her intentions are yet. She is giving off a mixed signal. Has she been faithful to her doctor’s appointments?” I asked Caleb, and he nodded his head in affirmation.
“She has not even missed any of her therapist appointments too. Her drugs and all, I have taken time to make sure that she is faithful to them.” He explained.
“The doctor had hinted that because of how early and how long she had been on the wrong prescription, she might have a relapse once in a while. It could be the case here, now, I am being open about this to you because I have seen you put your duties before your emotions. I hope you do the same if this situation calls for the same thing.” I said, hoping that my suspicions were not true as it would break Pandora’s heart the most.
“Alpha, I know what this seems like. I don’t mind going through all the investigative measures you plan to employ, but I can assure you that Ashley has absolutely nothing to do with it. This is not even from a place of emotions. All the spare time she has gotten since she came here has been spent with me. I know what it looks like, and I know the procedures too, but I genuinely hope that you believe me.” He said sternly and something in me urged me to let him go, that he was not who I needed to be accusing.
“For your sake and that of Ashley, I hope that is true,” I stated, and he stood up, giving me a brief handshake before leaving my office.
Pandora barged in a few seconds later, fuming. I was getting used to her temper and I even found it cute sometimes.
“What the fuck? I saw them arresting Caleb on your orders. What the hell is that?” She fumed angrily at me.
“Relax. It’s just formalities. He is a prime suspect. Alongside Ashley.” I announced and waited for another outburst of anger with a tinge of hurt.
“Ashley will never do that. I want Caleb released immediately, I do not care what the standard procedure is. For the sake of everything he did for me, come back to you baby, please. And don’t touch Ashley, she has been through enough emotional turmoil in the past few months.” She pleaded.
It didn’t make me happy, but I knew there was a sense in what she was saying. Someone could be trailing them and setting a trap for Ashley or Caleb to fall in.
One thing I remained convinced about was that it was an inside job and whoever did it was solely after revenge. My mind drifted to Mrs. Edna, and I made a mental note to call the psychiatric hospital she was in later.
“It’s fine, baby. I can’t say no to you, but what I’m doing is standard procedure. I will have him released as soon as they are done questioning him.” I explained and Pandora stormed out of my office again. I’m sure she was going to see Caleb and possibly Ashley.
