I was enraged. I wanted to go back into the room and ram my fists into her pregnant belly. She had finally calmed down and slept off but I could still feel myself losing control.
“Shit! Wilson, get a grip on yourself. That is bipolar talk.” I cautioned and forced myself to walk away from the hospital.
I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I brought it out and saw that I had several missed call notifications, alongside some text messages from Ashley.
I wondered what could be wrong, as she hardly ever needed my help to get anything done. I opened one of the numerous text messages that she had sent. One of them read.
GET DOWN TO KIRSTEN’S HOUSE. MOM MADE A MESS. A REALLY TERRIBLE MESS OF EVERYTHING.
“Oh my! What could have happened? I thought Mom said she would be taking care of everything tonight?” I asked myself as I rushed into my car and zoomed off in the direction of where I remembered that Kirsten lived.
As soon as I got to the house, I met my mom scrubbing the floors and I could hear the hacking sound, like some cutting wood in the forest.
“Mom?” I asked, unsure of the sight in front of me.
Mom turned slowly, and I was shocked at how bloodied she looked.
“What in the bloody hell happened here, Mom?” I asked, shocked beyond expression.
“What do you think happened? A blood fest?” She fired back at me hotly, and I wondered what I had done to deserve the outburst.
“Where is Ashley?” I asked her suspiciously, praying that she had not done anything to hurt Ashley.
She gave me a shocked look and hissed.
“You think that I would hurt my daughter. I am not the crazy one and if you had just stuck to the rule of constantly looking for me immediately you started having a crisis, we would not be here by now” she fired at me again and just before I could even understand what she was driving at, Ashley walked into the house dragging two big trash bags with her.
“Oh, Wilson. You did not pick up when I called you earlier.” She said casually as she wiped the streaks of sweat off her forehead.
“What happened here? I went to the hospital to talk to Preggo.” I replied, still wondering what was going on with the two women in my life.
“Mom killed Grandma Kirsten with a fucking shovel. That’s what happened.” Ashley replied and yanked open the fridge to down a jug of water.
“What’s in the bag?” I asked Ashley, refusing to believe that it was the body of Kirsten’s grandmother that was in there.
“I had to cut up her body, Wilson, what do you think?” She said so casually that I actually doubted if I heard her correctly.
“You cut up her body? Why the fuck are you both talking like some psycho killers? The gruesome murder that you both are talking about like it was an easy daily chore for both of you” I replied.
“That spot you are standing on was the very spot mom beat her to death with a shovel. I am only trying to salvage the situation so you both do not get convicted alone if you ever get caught.” Ashley said in a teasing manner and my mouth fell open in shock.
“Ashley, this is not even a joke. This is crazy, it is even crazier that you both don’t see anything wrong with this.”I marveled.
The two women looked at me like I had suddenly grown two heads.
“Who do you think all these were for? Do you think we would just wake up and start killing innocent people who had never hurt us? Get real Wilson, we are both trying to help you.” Ashley said.
“I am sorry. I just thought we could have used another way. I am not trying to invalidate what you two are currently doing for me right now. It just looked so gruesome and messy.” I said and shifted uncomfortably on my feet. Transferring my weight from one leg to another.
“When you are done whining, you need to help me move these trash bags to the car. We are going to burn it alongside Kirsten’s body.” Ashley said and pointed to the trash bag that was jutted at several points by human bones.
“You do not really mean that. You said I could handle preggo and you would handle this. Why do I have to help you with yours when you did not help me with mine?” I asked, not wanting to admit that I could not stomach the murder and all the blood.
“I can simply walk out of here with Mom and let you handle everything. I will not even bother trading words with you, you can either choose to help yourself or not, but do not expect me to be putting my life on the line for you when you will not even make the smallest of sacrifices. Remember that you were the one who killed Kirsten. You twisted her neck like a fucking rabid animal.” Ashley said and stormed out.
Mom was almost done cleaning and was just disposing of some of the things she used in the trash bag that Ashley easily hoisted along.
“Bring back home the body, or you might as well start eating it!” She sneered at me.
“Fine, just wait outside. I am not convinced that I want to be in this house all by myself.” I said as I rushed to where the bags were and carried both of them carefully.
“Better!” Ashley said and smiled at me like she did not just threaten to let me go to jail.
“Oh, now you can smile at me?” I asked her, pretending to be upset.
It was in moments like this that I was most grateful for the kind of family that I was blessed with. I know that my mom and my sister constantly have my back and they would even do absolutely anything to ensure that I was safe and fine.
I sighed and hoisted the bags into the boot of my car.
