I stirred and jolted awake. I wanted to take my hands to my belly as I felt a dull ache.
“Don’t move so much.” Mrs. Edna’s voice came from beside me. I turned my neck slowly to look at her, and she shifted her chair close to the bed I lay on.
“What happened?” I moaned, the pain in my abdomen down to my vagina increased and I felt as if someone had touched my insides with hot sauce.
“It was as a result of too much stress. I should have let you stay back at home.” Mrs. Edna said and smoothened my hair.
“What else? I sense that there is more, but you do not want to tell me. Please, do. I can handle it.” I begged.
She gave me a long considering look before holding my hands and squeezing it reassuringly. My mind began to race as she was offering me comfort before even breaking the news of whatever had happened to me.
“Preggo, the babies… Something happened.” She said and paused, I could see the great difficulty it was taking her to inform me of what happened while I was unconscious.
“Mrs. Edna, please talk to me. This suspense will kill me before whatever you want to say.” I sighed, slightly upset and struggling to control my emotions.
I prayed to the moon goddess silently in my heart, hoping that nothing had happened to my only connection with the life that I once knew.
“You lost one of the babies, the rest of the babies were lying heavily on him and with everything you have had to go through all week, the child was already stressed. It would not have made it out alive anyway. I am sorry Preggo.” Mrs. Edna said, sympathizing with me and comforting me.
I was shocked, I felt a great sense of loss and made sense of the increasingly painful ache that I felt in my abdomen. I clutched my stomach and wailed bitterly. I wondered how much of my life had changed in the past few months, and what exactly I had done to deserve the barrage of evil things that were happening to me.
“Preggo, you have to take it easy, you still have to take care of your little ones. Remember, you still have two more of them to worry about their well-being. If you continue the way you are going now, you might end up harming them unintentionally.” Mrs. Edna pacified me. I tried to listen to her but the sense of loss was so great that I doubted if the pain came from just this event alone.
“Thank you, Mrs. Edna. I am deeply grateful. I can’t imagine what my life would be without you. Thank you.” I said and wiped the tears from my face.
“It is fine. I am glad you came into our lives too, preggo. Thank you.” She said to me, smiling warmly and kindly at me. I found peace in her smiles and managed to calm down.
Long after Mrs. Edna had left, and I had managed to stabilize my emotions, Wilson and Ashley walked into my room, full of smiles.
“Hey, Preggo!” Ashley greeted cheerfully, unusually happy for her kind of person.
“Hey P.” Wilson greeted, he did not say more than that, like he was stopping himself from saying anything more.
“Hey. Where have you guys been all day?” I asked calmly, feeling the dizziness wave through her head for the second time that day.
“I met someone new! He has been my crush for so long! You will not believe how we finally met?” Ashley said excitedly, it was obvious that she had been waiting to talk about this.
“Oh, really? Tell me all about it then!” I replied, trying to muster as much enthusiasm as I could so she did not feel like I did not want to talk to her.
“Ashley, do you not have the sense to let her rest? You know she just lost a baby, bringing up this kind of conversation right now might not be the best of ideas.” Wilson warned her.
Ashley pouted at him and squeezed her face.
“It’s fine Ashley. I need the distraction. Talk to me, who knows I might have tips on how to help you clench your catch and have him head over heels for you!” I said and Ashley’s face immediately lit up.
“Oh thank you Beautiful Preggo! I always knew I could count on you!” She said and stuck out her tongue at her brother.
Wilson merely scoffed and shook his head before taking a seat on the only sofa provided for my room.
“He is an Alpha. Alpha Rolan!” Ashley announced and my wolf leaped. That name seemed to be exciting to her but we both did not know why, so I let it pass.
“… he is cute and tall and rich and wealthy. Oh! and I love him and can’t wait to have big cute babies for him.” Ashley finished and squealed delightfully.
“Oh, Ashley, I’m sure he is quite the gentleman. You like him very much?” I asked, unsure of why I was getting angry about a man I had never met.
Wilson seemed to have noticed my mood because he came close to Ashley and smacked her head playfully.
“What did you do that for?” Ashley asked, clutching the spot at the back of her head where Wilson had smacked her.
“Because I am your big brother and can!” Wilson declared and laughed.
“When I marry Alpha Rolan, you will not be able to disrespect me like that. You will bow before me and I will buy you for a few millions!” Ashley declared and we all laughed.
“I have to go now, Ashley. Are you coming with me or staying back?” Wilson asked and looked at his watch like he was suddenly rushing.
“Leaving? Why? I thought you were done for the day, and you were even planning to sleep in the hospital?” Ashley quizzed and Wilson began to itch his hands in a rapid manner.
Ashley quickly got up and led him outside when she noticed that he had started itching.
“Preggo, I will be right back, let me walk my brother to the car.” She said and walked him out, even my goodbyes to Wilson were replied to by her and I knew that something was wrong.
Maybe something that Mrs. Edna had hinted at on their way to the hospital.
