I left her room, my mind still drifting back to her beautiful face. It did not matter that she was pregnant. I just wanted to have her.
When I saw her beautiful wolf in that ditch, I couldn’t seem to go anywhere else, even though she was already half dead and I knew how hard it would be to get out of the ditch.
I had risked it all, I was quite disappointed when I saw the bulge of her stomach. I have been trying all the while to keep these raging feelings at bay, but it keeps popping its ugly head up. I pretended not to care for some time, just so I could defend my relationship and intentions with her.
But as the days went by, I began to get scared that she might actually never wake up.
She had, and I wasn’t even home to be the first to gaze into her beautiful eyes. I strolled into my office and sat down and shortly after, Ashley, my younger sister who doubles as my assistant barged into my office as usual.
“Hey bro, you seemed pretty flustered. Are you okay?” She asked me.
If I had not looked up, I would not have seen the stupid smile on her face that I knew only translated to one thing.
That she has seen through me and knows that I was beginning to develop feelings for a pregnant woman I did not know.
“Oh wipe that stupid grin off your face!” I said, color rising fast to my cheeks and my face flushed.
“Careful brother. You might just pass out from hypoxia. Let your heart pump some love around.” She said and laughed.
“What are you doing here anyway?” I asked, pretending to be upset with her jokes.
“Mom sent me out. Said something about me talking too much.” She laughed cheekily after that.
“Listen to whatever she advises you to do because she is very right.” I teased back, hoping my words drew a reaction from her.
“Oh please, I only talk too much because I know so much. Why will I ever be quiet when I have so much knowledge to share? What will you also ever do without my sweet and cheering words, brother?” She replied.
“Leave me alone,” I scoffed, but I really wanted to plead with her not to discuss the embarrassing situation I was in because of the strange woman.
“Never seen you look at anyone else like that after the death of Alice. It feels good to see, but, keep in mind that you do not know a single thing about this woman, and she has a life where she’s coming from. She is also pregnant, visibly pregnant so make your decisions wisely.” She chided and smiled gently at me.
“I have heard you. I do not harbor any feelings for her, aside from that of a good guy who saved her from the ditch and the damsel in distress that I saved. A pregnant damsel by the way” I defended, hoping my countenance was backing me up, and I was convincing enough for this smart mouth of a sister that I have got.
“Keep lying to yourself. What were you doing that deep in the forest and so far, away from the pack too? You went for a run?” She asked.
“I wanted to discuss that with you, even. So, the patrol team has been having issues with the borderlines. So many strange and unmarked wolves have been making trips without necessary identification. I went to check if there was any breach in the fence. I hadn’t gotten there when I smelled fresh blood and then the strange woman’s cry for help.” I explained.
Ashley gave a thoughtful look at the ceiling. I liked it whenever she did this, it could only mean that she was coming up with the closest, most accurate analysis of everything that I had just told her.
“Well, do you remember the cases of the children who were kidnapped and disappeared at that border fence?” She asked me and my mind flashed back to how scared the men who were sent to rescue those children came back traumatized because according to them ‘the ground swallowed the kids’
“What about it?” I asked, my mind blank and not making any connection with what she was explaining.
“I think those kids didn’t die. I think there is a secret opening we need to find. The rogues must have been using that secret gateway for a long while.” She concluded thoughtfully and cleared her throat a couple of times.
“Oh, I see the connection that you are making now. I will ask the men to go back to that location and survey the area properly.” I said.
“Ask them to dig the ground too. They should look out for…”
“Why don’t you just come with me? You will be wonderful on the field, lioness.” I teased, knowing that calling her lioness made her agree to do all the work with me.
“Fine! I will, but I have a date on Thursday and girl’s night with Hannah and Beverly on Friday. So those two nights are out of the equation” Ashley said.
“I was hoping to take all of your time next week, but that’s fine. You can go there to check in on them from time to time and you can also do some supervision. We need to block that path fast before other packs accuse us of aiding rogues to raid them.” I said and scoffed.
It’s not like they would challenge us anyway. The only pack that could match up would be the white moon pack, and they have been the most peaceful pack so far.
“Alpha Rolan will not do that,” she said, and I noticed the color rise to her cheeks.
“You have a crush on Rolan?” I said, genuinely surprised as they had only met twice, and on both occasions, he hadn’t spared her a second glance.
“He is a fine Alpha. I intend to be his queen!” She announced joyfully, and I burst into a fit of laughter.
