Ulric knew that Rosalind would ask to meet the driver. If he refused at this moment, she would surely become more suspicious. Truthfully, this was the first time in his life he dared to act but not own up to it. He really didn’t know how to explain the situation to Rosalind, especially since she was drunk, having consumed spiked drinks, while he was sober.
Thinking about this, Ulric pressed his temples forcefully. The throbbing pain was unbearable and incessant. The moral condemnation within him was tearing him apart at all times! He wanted to find Rosalind and confess everything, but he feared that she would hate him. He couldn’t face Rosalind.
Cedric brought the driver to Jingtown Airport and was shocked to see his boss’s car parked at the entrance. A secretary like himself being personally picked up by the boss was unexpected. Once in the car, Cedric quickly offered to take over the driving from Ulric, who was in the driver’s seat.
“Mr. Walters, let me drive.”
Ulric glanced at the driver sitting in the back seat through the rearview mirror and nodded, “Hmm.”
He urgently needed to instruct the driver on what to say to avoid slipping up in front of Rosalind.
The driver, realizing who Ulric was, looked around the luxurious car in dawning surprise, but then it made sense to him.
“So you are the boss! No wonder you had me bump into that beautiful woman’s car-must be someone wealthy!”
Cedric, unaware of the incidents in Wayer City, held his breath to catch the gossip. Ulric’s lips twitched slightly as he briefed the driver, “I need to explain who you’re about to meet and what you should say to her.”
“No problem at all!” the driver replied, already accustomed to Ulric’s wealth and obediently responsive.
“Just tell me what to do! But, Mr. Walters, I have a small request. Although you’ve given quite a lot already, my daughter is ill-”
“How much do you need?” Ulric interrupted, not having time for lengthy explanations about requests that were ultimately about money.
“The surgery is said to cost $100, 000, and the follow-up treatment is still uncertain, so I’ve been driving day and night to earn money.”
Ulric glanced at Cedric, who was now driving.
“Give him $500, 000.”
The driver immediately waved his hands, “That’s too much, really! I feel like I’m asking for too much; $100, 000 will suffice. I will make sure everything you’ve asked is done perfectly!”
“That $500, 000 is for the use of your time, however long I might need you,” Ulric explained. He wasn’t sure how long he would need to maintain this connection with Rosalind, or how long until he could finally give up, so he needed the driver to be available on call.
“I’m yours for life! Mr. Walters, just call and I’ll be there!”
Ulric roughly explained the situation to him, omitting the intimate parts, ensuring the driver fully believed that nothing had happened between them. This would prevent any possibility of him slipping up. Finally, the driver tentatively asked, “Mr. Walters, is it the same girl as last time?”
“Yes.”
“You really care for her, don’t you? Is it a case of unrequited love?” Gossip is human nature, and so it was for the driver too.
Cedric, driving in front, dared not speak, just waiting for his boss to respond.
After a long pause, Ulric finally said in a deep voice, “Yes, she doesn’t love me.”
