CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-THREE.
Myles’S POV.
Everyone rises from their various seats as I walk into the conference room. It’s ten in the morning and the pack elders called an impromptu meeting and right now, my heart is beating fast because I think I know why this meeting has been called.
I’m in trouble.
I’m in deep shit.
A few months ago, I made a fatal mistake that is about to cost me everything.
“You may take your seats.” I tell them and sit down as well. Despite the war that’s raging in my heart, I’m trying my best to keep a calm and collected composure. I’m scared, but I can never let them see my fear. That will lead to my doom.
My eyes scan their faces. Cold and serious. They are going to end my life with criticisms today.
“Is the meeting going to begin or are we going to keep staring at each other’s faces like we don’t have other important things to do.”
They cannot see my fear.
One of the elders sitting on my right side clears his throat, training his eyes on me. I swallow dryly and prepare to take the blow.
“Alpha Myles. A few months ago, something very unusual happened in this pack. During a grand celebration at your castle, you found your mate who happened to be a poor slave girl. You didn’t seem to be very pleased with the choice the Moon goddess made for you, so you rejected her instantly and chose someone else to be your mate. When that news reached us, the pack elders, we tried to call you to order. We tried to warn you about the consequences of that rash decision you made, but you were so confident in your choice that you didn’t listen to us. You went ahead to mate with and marry someone you were not destined to be with.”
“I don’t need a reminder for that, Callahan.” I snap.
That is one bitter truth I don’t like to hear.
“It’s been five months now, Alpha Myles. The girl you chose as your mate has not been able to conceive. She will never be able to carry your child because she is not your true mate. As an Alpha, the only woman who can bear a child for you – the heir to this throne – is your true mate. The one chosen for you by the Moon goddess, but you rejected her and now she’s mated to the Supreme Alpha, Alpha Jayce. Without that girl, you won’t be able to give us an heir to the throne and the future of our pack is not secure without an heir.” His words land their blow and I’m struck and speechless as I process his words. My eyes flick from his burning gaze to the wall ahead of me. The weight of all their stares presses against me like an anvil, making each anvil progressively difficult.
They warned me.
I should have listened.
I was too stubborn to listen.
I thought I knew best. I was so blinded by my desire to have a girl from a sophisticated background that I refused to reason properly and right now, I’m in deep shit.
Fuck!
I brush my hand over my face, sighing heavily. I’m sure by now they can smell my fear and nervousness. I can’t even hide it anymore.
“Alpha Myles.” Another elder calls. I don’t even spare him a glance because I know he wants to continue from where his colleague stopped. I want to glue their mouths shut. I want to leave this room. I want to scream my lungs out and ram my head into a wall for being so block headed. I want to turn back the hands of time and make the right decision.
I want Alora back!
“You need to get back your true mate. She needs to bear you a child – an heir. You need to secure the future of this pack.”
“And if I don’t?” I ask sharply. They all look at each other before the man turns to look at me again.
“If yo don]t bear us an heir, them I’m afraid well have to dethrone you and put someone else.”
“Nonsense!” I bang a clenched fist on the table and rise to my feet, anger surging through me like electric current. My hands fall by my side, trembling. “Nonsense!” My eyes scan their petrified faces. “You can’t do that to me. I am the Alpha of this pack and I will never let you dethrone me.”
“If you don’t want that to happen, all you have to do is give us an heir, Alpha Myles. Those are the rules. To remain in power, the Alpha in power needs to provide an heir – be it boy or girl – to secure the future of the pack.” The old man repeats that annoying statement. I cast him a hard glare, wishing I could strangle him to death with my eyes.
“Impossible!” I scream, throwing the chair behind me against the wall. Shocking gasps fill the entire room as the chair crashes against the wall, shattering into pieces. I don’t wait for them to pin me with their judgemental looks, my legs carry me out of the room and I head straight for my chambers. Once in my bedroom, I slam the door so hard, I’m surprised it’s still intact.
“Baby.” The sound of Daphne’s voice gets me even more irritated. I turn to look at her and I’m shocked that my current beast mode doesn’t scare her. She walks closer to me and tries to touch my face, but I grab her hand mid-air and yank it away from my body. She yells in pain as she falls on the floor.
“Bad luck! That’s what you mean to me. Bad luck!” My lungs hurt from screaming. Tears pour down her eyes as she looks up at me, probably wondering why I’m acting this way.
“Babe, I don’t understand, what’s going on? Why are you acting this way?”
“Because you’ve ruined my life!” I scream yet again, pacing about. I fist my hair, pulling at my hair strands and ruffling my entire hair. Shaking my head and groaning and cursing. My breaths are coming in too fast. I can’t think properly. “I should have never rejected Alora. I should never have chosen you over her. You have ruined my life!”
“Baby…” she rises to her feet, crying. “I don’t understand why you’re suddenly acting this way. Tell me what’s wrong.”
“You want to know what’s wrong?” I inch closer to her. She nods in fear. Her lips are trembling and her entire face is drenched with tears. For the first time in forever, her hair is disheveled.
“You can’t give me a child and because of that, I risk losing my title as Alpha of this pack. Because of you, I’m going to be dethroned. That’s what’s going on!” All the color drains from her face.
“But… that’s not possible.”
“Well it is! You know what, I don’t want to see your face right now. Get the hell out of my bedroom.” I point to the door. “GET OUT!” She jumps in fright and scampers away, crying like a baby. I slum on the floor and carry my head in my hands, muttering curses to myself.
I fucked up.
I fucked up big time!
