Jovan’s POV.
“Reed rose from the dead? What the fuck do you mean by that?” I ask Lloyd, totally confused after he tells me a very scary story about Reed dying and resurrecting in the morgue.
I have so many questions running through my mind at this juncture.
How did he die all of a sudden in the first place? When he came to threaten me yesterday, I saw no sign of ill health on him.
“It means a few minutes ago he was dead and cold and pale, but right now, he’s very much alive.”
“Lloyd, you are not telling me what I want to hear. How did Reed die in the first place? He was fine as of when I last saw him yesterday.”
“Yes he was.” He cleared his throat and sauntered over to where I’m standing. My temples are hurting from overstimulation. I don’t understand what is going on. “I know we planned to bush him in the woods, but I decided to act on impulse last night and I got him, but he has once again proved not to be an ordinary Omega.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“The accident. I staged it. I put people on his tail. They had been monitoring him and reported to me that he loved going out for rides late at night in order to clear his head or something and for some time now, I’ve had a truck on standby, waiting for him to embark on one of those rides and he did last night. The collision was fatal on his part. His car was totaled and the driver slit his throat. I saw the mark when I got to the hospital. He died! He was cold on the slab, pale, lifeless, but all that changed a few minutes after Alpha Jayce arrived. Reed resurrected and now he looks like he wasn’t dead a while ago. Even the slit scar on his neck which was stitched has disappeared. He’s as alive as he was yesterday.”
“How is that even possible?” I ask, walking helter-skelter around the living room? “How come he’s alive after such a fatal accident and a slit throat?”
“He’s not ordinary. That’s one thing for sure!”
“Jesus Christ!” I run my fingers through My hair, ruffling it. This is too much to take. If killing Reed is this difficult, then doing the same to Jayce will be almost impossible!
“I am confused as well, Jovan. This was supposed to be the perfect way to get rid of Reed and finally have access to Alpha Jayce and him surviving. It is scary because I don’t know what to expect when we finally go for Alpha Jayce.” I groan in frustration.
I’m trying to think of ways by which we can go about getting rid of those men, but my mind is blank. I can’t think of anything. The impossibility of the outcome of killing both Reed and Jayce is clearly certain, but I refused to bow to defeat.
I cannot lose this war!
Yes.
We are at war and I cannot afford to lose.
I have to become the Supreme Alpha of this world.
“Lloyd. Thank you for the information. You should go back to the hospital before they suspect your absence. We will think of more strategies once this issue dies down.” Lloyd nods.
“Alright then, goodnight.” Then he heads for the back door. I palm my face and let out a frustrated scream.
The futility of my past plans has washed over me, dulling my senses and settling me into a daze. Every move I make is a mistake. Every calculated effort is a failure.
I force myself to sit on the couch but I can’t stop tapping my shoes on the floor. I’m trying to calm myself down but my nerves are not cooperating.
What am I not doing right?
“Jovan.” My mother’s familiar voice calls my name. I look at her, agitated. “Why do you look so restless, what’s going on?”
“Mother.” I want to rise up and crash into her hands, but I force myself to stay seated on the chair. This is not the time for me to crave motherly comfort.
I need to think.
Hard!
“What happened? It’s midnight yet the atmosphere feels so tense around here.”
“Why won’t it be when Reed just rose from the dead?”
“What?” She asks aghast. I tell her all about Lloyd’s orchestrated accident, slitting of Reed’s throat including the part where he’s still alive now and mother goes rock solid with shock, her eyes staring vacantly at the wall ahead.
I can’t blame her for taking it this way.
No one in the history of werewolves has anyone cheated death.
This is outrageous!
Who the fuck does Reed think he is?
“Now, that guy is something else!”
“There’s something about him, mother. There’s something about that guy we don’t know about and I’m going to find out!”
“I think you should lie low for now, Jovan. This incident is going to spark a serious investigation and I don’t want anything leading to you. I’m sure Lloyd did not leave any traces behind, so it’ll be over in less than no time. For now, simply lie low and as usual, pretend you know nothing about what’s going on.”
“Yes, mother.”
But my mind is still buzzing.
I keep asking myself one question over and over again.
Who the hell is Reed?
