Jonas’ POV
It had been two days, and I noticed the relative hustle and bustle amongst Andre’s men. Every day, I noticed the increased influx of people coming in and out of the mansion. His assistant, Pierre, seemed very busy, and I could see him carrying a large stack of books to and from his car for the last two days.
I left my room and decided to take a walk outside. I noticed a soldier standing near the front gate, and I casually walked to him, whistling a non-existent tune.
I bumped into him and he veered forward angrily and was about to curse me.
“Son of a…”
We suddenly locked eyes, and he fell silent immediately.
“Boss?”
He looked at me in surprise, and his anger calmed down.
“I didn’t know that it was you. What brings you here?”
I scoffed.
While I was staying with Andre, I had managed to sneak two of my best men in with his guards, and they were feeding me information concerning his movements and plans. Andre was a sneaky snake, and I couldn’t afford to underestimate him again-not after what he did to Fentris and I.
I offered the guard a stick of cigarette. He hurriedly looked around, hesitant to take it from me.
“Just take it, Dylan, everyone else is really busy in the mansion. I doubt anyone will notice that just one guard is smoking.”
He took the cigarette stick from me surreptitiously, and I helped him to light it. We stood there smoking for a while, and finally, I urged him to spill the beans on what was going on.
He inhaled deeply and exhaled a large puff of smoke into the air.
“Word on the streets is that Andre is doing a little research on his little Luna.”
I raised my brows, and my eyes were wide.
“Olivia? Are you sure it’s her?”
“Who else? Last I checked, Andre didn’t have two lunas.”
I took another puff of the cigarette and urged Dylan to keep talking.
“Well then, what is he searching for?”
“That’s the difficult part,” he replied casually. “I’m not certain. However, two days ago, people from the research team did come to the mansion and have a meeting with Andre. I noticed that after the meeting, the mansion became much more lively, and then the influx of people began. Is there something about Olivia that he shouldn’t know?”
I didn’t answer the question and took another deep puff of smoke. Andre was smarter than I thought. How did he catch on that Olivia was special?
Fuck! I couldn’t let him find out. I couldn’t let him know how valuable Olivia was to me else all my plans would come crashing down.
“Hey Jonas”
I turned to Dylan, and he was still smoking casually.
“I did hear that they were searching on something about Selene. I can’t really remember the rest of it, but it was definitely something about the Moon Goddess.”
Shit!
I scrunched my half-smoked cigarette in my hand and tossed it angrily to the ground. Dylan looked at me in surprise but didn’t say anything more.
I was snarling, and my fingers were balled into a fist. That bastard was catching on way too fast. First, he thwarted my plans with Fentris, and now he was making a move to find Olivia’s heritage. I shouldn’t have been so laid back. I should have been around Olivia more, and maybe I could have prevented this from happening.
I snarled even more.
Olivia was meant to be mine-she was meant to be mine from the very beginning-but somehow, I lost her, and now she was frolicking with that bastard. I spent years looking for her, and now that I had found her, it was a perfect time to make my move, but Andre was catching up quickly.
I wasn’t scared of him. I was going to take him down and make Olivia mine, just as she should have been all these years ago.
“I have to go now,” I said to Dylan without looking at him. “But keep me posted on any other updates.”
I walked away from him and headed back to the mansion.
Just as I was about to go in, I noticed a car pull up in front of the mansion. I hesitated for a while and saw Pierre come out and open the back door.
I watched him pull out a stack of books, and he began to walk towards the mansion with them.
I was able to catch the titles on the spine of some of the books: Acrophyia, Deorum posteri, Dea lunae.
These were very expensive and hard-to-find books about the Moon Goddess. How did he get his hands on them?
I walked up to Pierre, but just as I was about to ask him if he needed help carrying them, he snarled at me fiercely, and I backed away.
I had noticed that he was a very timid person around Andre. I didn’t expect him to be this rough around the edges.
I watched him from a distance enter Andre’s study, and I sent a mind link to my other man, whom I had managed to station close to Andre’s study door.
“Is the bastard inside?”
“Yes. He hasn’t left his study all morning. Books have been leaving and entering his office. It seems like he studying for a test or something.”
I nodded and waited for Pierre to leave his office. As soon as he did, I went in and saw Andre sitting at his desk with a pile of other books in front of him.
I stood at the doorway, folding my arms and looking at him as his eyes started across the words on the pages.
“What are you doing here, Jonas?”
I chuckled mockingly and continued to watch him.
“Oh, nothing much. Just thought to come and see the big man in charge. I’m surprised that you are actually reading without glasses. Aren’t you scared that you might hurt your eyes with the bright light, old man?”
Andre slammed the book closed and stood up, glaring at me.
“I will only say this one last time: what are you doing here?”
I left my perch at the doorpost and walked slowly towards him.
“Word on the streets is that you are looking for information about the descendants of the Selene?”
Andre rolled his eyes and scoffed.
“That’s isn’t word on the streets. In fact, you found that information out from the two men that you managed to position in my guards.”
I looked at him with wide-open eyes. How did he know?
“Surprised, aren’t you? Did you really think that I wouldn’t notice two strange men among my guards?”
He strode up to me, closing the distance between us.
“You might think that you are smart, Jonas, but you aren’t. The only reason that they are still living and breathing is because they haven’t caused a disturbance yet. And they better not for their sake and yours.”
I walked up to him and now, we were standing toe to toe.
“You should know by now that your threats don’t scare me.”
Andre’s glare narrowed on me.
“They should. You seem to forget that you are in my pack, and I’m the one in charge.”
I walked past him to his desk and plopped myself in his chair. I put my feet up on his desk and reclined slightly.
“Aren’t you the big bad wolf? We both know that you won’t harm me.”
Andre turned to me and slammed his hands on the desk, but I didn’t even flinch. I enjoyed pulling his strings.
“And what makes you think that I can’t have you killed and your body dumped where no one can find it?”
I chuckled, and my golden eyes stared deep into Andre’s green ones.
“Because your mate has taken a liking to me and I know about the descendants of Selene.”
Andre eased up and stood up straight. His lips were thin, and his eyes bearing down on me.
“Do you really think that I am so stupid as to believe you? I know that you’re bluffing.”
I took out a cigarette stick and twirled it around my finger.
“Am I now?…”
