Jonas’ POV
I had my hands on the wheel and was zooming forward at a blazing speed. I frequently checked my side mirrors to see if those bastards were in pursuit. I had encountered their kind before, and it was because of people like them that I had lost my first quarry.
My new passenger was seated beside me, and she looked at me in horror. Her eyes were wide open, and she backed up fearfully against the door. I scoffed and kept driving. We will talk soon enough.
After a few more minutes, I was certain that I wasn’t being chased, so I pulled over and stopped the car near the dead end of an old road.
“Well, that was some entanglement that you got yourself in with border security. You are lucky that I was on your tail. You could have been back on your way to that Alpha that you despise so much.”
Nicole was silent for a second and then exclaimed loudly.
“Who the fuck are you?! Why did you save me?!”
I chuckled and took off my mask, revealing my face and doing my best to arrange my ruffled hair.
“And this is why I don’t usually help women. You get them out of a pickle, and they can’t even say a simple ‘thank you’.”
I watched as she assessed me head to toe in fear. She was speechless for a while, and I couldn’t help but enjoy the bewilderment in her eyes.
“I knew it!”
She suddenly relaxed and slammed her fist on the car’s dashboard.
“Of course, Andre wasn’t going to let me go so easily. That bastard! Now, You!”
She turned to me again with an accusing glance.
“You still haven’t answered my question! Who are you, and what do you want from me?! ”
I didn’t answer her and instead took out a cigarette packet that I had seen peeking out from the car’s pigeonhole. I managed to light a stick, and soon, I was putting it away and leaving Nicole to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
“Are you an enemy? Wow! Is Andre so careless that he let his guard down and allowed a rival to slip past him? If I remember correctly, he brought you home with him the day he came back from searching for that bitch he calls his mate.”
Her lips curled in a smirk, and she looked at me with naughty admiration.
“Touche. Very touche.”
I chuckled, took a deep puff of the cigarette, and blew a smoke ring in the air.
“You seem to give him much more credit than he deserves.”
I put out the cigarette’s lit end but kept the stump in my pocket.
“He is a good wolf but not good enough.”
Nicole took it as her cue to chuckle, and I glared at her angrily. What was funny to her?
Her annoying laugh went on for a few minutes, and I soon had enough.
“And might I ask what is so funny? Do I amuse you?”
She squeezed in a few more minutes of laughter before she finally calmed down.
“I’m sorry, but you are terribly wrong to underestimate someone like Andre. I have been with him for three years and can tell you he is not one to be crossed. This game, whatever it is that you are playing, is a dangerous one. He is a tough nut to crack.”
I smirked. She certainly didn’t know me too well.
“I suggest that you don’t worry your head about it. I am willing to take my chances. Now, back to you”
I turned my head to her, and she looked at me suspiciously.
“A little birdie told me that you aren’t Olivia’s mother. Care to clear the air on that?”
She looked at me in horror, and I couldn’t help but give her a nasty smirk. I had her pinned.
“How… Where… Who… Who told you that?”
Her eyes were wide and full of fear, but I wasn’t in the mood for it. I wanted answers, and I wanted them now.
“Doesn’t matter who told me. What I want is an answer.”
In a flash, I pulled out a knife and held it to her throat. The cold steel touched her skin, and shivers rippled down her spine.”
“So spill. You have ten seconds to do so.”
I didn’t even have to start the countdown before she started talking.
“Okay. Okay. I’ll talk. It’s the truth, but I’m not allowed to let anyone know.”
I was immediately intrigued and held the knife closer to her throat.
“And who is not allowing you to tell? If you are scared of them, why did you have to make your non-affiliation quite pronounced by treating her so badly.”
She began to stutter as the cold blade cooled her skin.
“I didn’t mistreat her. I simply left her alone. I don’t want them to come back to look for me. She is a walking curse, and I just want to get away from her. That bitch has ruined two of my marriages…”
“One. You have only been married once. If I understand, what you had with the Alpha was simply a contract of convenience to please the pack.”
I felt something in me spike. I wasn’t going to let her portray Olivia like that to me.
I felt her hand touch mine, and she slowly lowered the blade.
“I can smell something on you. You like Olivia, don’t you?”
Her eyes grew wide, and her fear morphed into a smirk in seconds.
“That little bitch has you pegged to her. Well, isn’t that a convenience?”
“Shut up!” I snapped back at her. “It’s none of your business.”
“Alright,” she quipped. “Then tell me this: Who sent you? We only met briefly. You can’t tell me that that one chance meeting spurred your spirits into saving me. Who are you working for?”
I took out my previously smoked cigarette and relit it. I took a big puff and allowed the smoke to sit between us.
“Just like you, I am not allowed to say who I’m working for. But take this.”
I pulled out a card and thrust it into her hands.
“Follow the directions on the card and give it to a certain Mr. Fox. He will help you stay safe.”
I took another deep puff and exhaled.
“Knowing that Alpha of yours, he will be coming after you soon…”
