“You go to sleep first, it’s getting late. I’ll read for a while,” Tom said to her, then walked towards the sofa by the window. He didn’t look at her directly, not wanting to make her feel awkward.
Agnes didn’t just stand there either. She turned her attention to the comfortable, soft bed behind her, trying to overcome her mixed emotions. She was wearing his shirt and gently lay down on his bed.
The night was exceptionally quiet. Smelling his scent on the bed, Agnes saw him sit down on the sofa by the window and pick up a book. The room’s lighting design ensured it wouldn’t disturb her sleep or his reading.
Lying on her side, she watched him quietly and tenderly. She knew it was a book about philosophy; she had seen it before taking a bath. The book was within his reach and showed signs of frequent reading, indicating he had a habit of reading every night. Truly, excellent people always work hard.
Gradually, Agnes’s thoughts drifted… She recalled how much she had missed him over the years and her unrestrained actions in the study tonight. Her heart felt heavy, and her love for him became even more cautious. She was afraid of pushing him away.
In a room on the second floor, Jona closed the door after entering and walked quickly inside.
“Madam, madam, I have good news! The young master has gone into the bedroom! He’s been inside for almost 20 minutes! He probably won’t come out again!”
Hearing this, Mrs. Fritz’s face lit up with excitement.
“Really? What about Agnes? She hasn’t come out either?”
“Miss Campbell went in over an hour ago and hasn’t come out since! It seems like they’re getting ready for bed. You can sleep soundly; there’s someone keeping watch outside.”
Mrs. Fritz was overjoyed at this news, especially thinking about the three different colored lace nightgowns. If Agnes was wearing one of those gowns lying in her cold and aloof grandson’s bed, something was bound to happen!
Mrs. Fritz’s intentions were clear; she hoped Tom would leave an heir before returning to the lab.
Jona was puzzled but couldn’t help asking after some thought, “Madam, may I ask you something?”
“Go ahead,” Grandma replied, putting away her smile.
“What do you really want for Lisa?” Jona hesitated before continuing, “Who do you hope will marry the young master?”
“Anyone can marry him as long as they do,” Grandma said frankly.
“I brought Lisa back because I didn’t know Tom had a girlfriend. Now that he does and he likes her very much, I don’t want to be the bad guy who breaks them up. I just want this marriage settled quickly so she can have children and everything can be finalized.”
Jona understood that Mrs. Fritz was quite democratic; she didn’t want to make decisions for others but just hoped to hold a great-grandchild soon.
That night, those secretly watching outside did not see the young master’s bedroom door open again; neither Miss Campbell nor the young master came out.
Grandma finally slept well.
As the moon set and the sun rose, a new day began.
Lisa, who had been sleepless all night, got up early. Wearing a beautiful dress, she went downstairs with a gloomy mood.
A servant greeted her proactively, “Good morning, Lisa.”
“Good morning,” she replied with a slight smile that didn’t reach her eyes and walked towards the yard.
As she stepped out of the living room, the cool breeze made her feel even worse as it cleared her mind further. Thinking about Agnes entering Tom’s bedroom filled her with disappointment.
Passing by Tom’s bedroom door earlier and seeing it tightly closed had deeply pained her heart.
She couldn’t bear to think about what might have happened in that big bed last night.
She felt envious and jealous.
