After the meeting with Nicholas, I felt so down. I wasn’t really sure he would agree to help me but I still had hope that he will because of how I thought he felt about me. I guess I was wrong.
After I got home, Theresa messaged me. She wanted to know about the outcome of the meeting and I told I it wasn’t finalized yet. Her brother was still undecided.
We talked more about other unimportant things before we ended the call. That night, I couldn’t sleep well. If Nicholas had chosen not to help me, I had to do it myself. I couldn’t keep waiting for him to hopefully agree.
Stood up from my bed and picked up my laptop. I had earlier asked my assigned secretary to send me the company’s expense report from the financial team. Amara was the one handling that part of the company so it wasn’t easy to get it.
I had to use my father’s name as an excuse before they finally handed it over. I also asked them to keep it private. I knew that Amara and Andrew would always have a plan B if stealing our company doesn’t work out for them.
It was really suspicious that my father would make Amara of all people the head of the financial department after just four years of being married. I haven’t even dreamt of taking such an important post.
After I checked the file, something seemed wrong. The file they gave to me is different from the one Amara usually submits to my father. In this one, the money allegedly used by the company is more than the one Amara shows my father.
That confirmed my suspicions. Amara was embezzling the company’s funds for herself. It proved my suspicion but it wouldn’t be enough to catch her because she can just easily deny it and put the blame on someone else.
I need to find out the bank she’s putting all the money into. The money is so much that it wouldn’t really make sense for her to spend it all at once. I’m sure she’s hiding it somewhere. Possibly a paper company.
Now that I think about it, that was where Andrew got the money to pay for the necklace he auctioned at the charity event. The Andrew I know doesn’t have enough money to purchase something as expensive as that.
No wonder Amara looked so mad when he paid for it. If he paid for the necklace through his account, then the bank’s name should be documented. I asked my secretary to send me the name of the account that the money was sent from.
She did and like I had expected, it was in Amara’s name. Now, I just have to find the account the money from our company is being lobbied into so I can match the accounts’ names. If it’s the same, it would be easier for me to expose them.
That way, they would loose everything they’ve taken from my family. But, that wouldn’t be easy. Amara’s the only one that would have the documents and I’m sure she wouldn’t put it anywhere in this house. She’s that thorough.
I was still deep in my thoughts when I heard my doorknob being twisted. My breath hitched as the thought of Andrew entering and catching me in that position crossed my mind.
I was about to turn off my laptop when I remembered that I locked the door earlier. I’ve been so used to sharing the room with him that I had already forgotten that I sent him out.
After he noticed that he couldn’t open the door, he started to knock on it. I sat quietly on my bed without any intention of opening it for him. When he realised that I wasn’t going to open the door, he stopped knocking and left.
I connected my laptop to the surveillance cameras and I was able to watch as he walked angrily into his room. He shut the door with a loud bang and kicked on the sofa angrily.
He’s really mad that I wasn’t giving him what he wanted. I smiled as I watched him prance around the room like a mad man. This is just the beginning.
The next day
I took my prepared myself and left the house early. I didn’t want to cross paths with Andrew nor Amara. Before I got to the company, I decided to stop at a Cafe and eat breakfast there.
I wasn’t able to finish half of my food when I started feeling weird. My eyes slowly started to get really blurry and I was having a migraine. I sat down for a while so I could regain myself.
When I felt like I was better, I paid for what I bought and left my half eaten food. I got to near the space that I parked my car when the migraine hit again, harder than before.
My feet felt really wobbly that it couldn’t hold my weight so I fell on my knees, thereby scraping them on the hard floor. I noticed a car coming at me in full speed but it stopped immediately it reached my front.
The driver came out and started talking to me, possibly asking if I was doing okay but I wasn’t listening. My head felt so heavy that I felt like I could pass out any moment.
I noticed someone crouched down to my level. I looked up only to see Nicholas staring at me in worry. What was he doing here??
At the hospital
As the doctor checked my injuries, I couldn’t stop thinking about what Nicholas had said on our way here. He really agreed to my proposal. It felt surreal to me.
I thought he was going to decline. That means my plans are back in motion. I turned my gaze towards him and I noticed how he continued staring at me with the same worried look. I wasn’t wrong. He really did have feelings for me.
“Thankfully her injuries aren’t severe. She just needs to apply some ointment on them on a daily basis.” The doctor said and I noticed how Nicholas’ tense look disappeared.
“So I can leave now?” I asked as I attempted to stand up but the doctor stopped me.
“Even though you’re physically alright, it doesn’t mean you can go about stressing yourself.”
“Is something wrong with her doctor?” Nicholas asked.
“She recently had a miscarriage. Didn’t she?” The doctor asked and Nicholas went mute immediately. He had both a shocked and confused expression written on his face.
“Oh.. you didn’t know.” The doctor muttered when he saw Nicholas’ expression.
“I’m sorry for breaking out the news this way. I thought you knew already. But, I just wanted to let you know that you should reduce amount of work that you do. Even though you aren’t pregnant, you’re still recovering from the one you lost.” The doctor advised before taking his leave because the atmosphere in the room was getting too tense.
All through, my eyes were solely on Nicholas. He had been quiet since the doctor broke the news about my miscarriage. Was he suddenly having a change of mind??
With that thought, I started to panic. I was about to say something when he suddenly pulled me into a hug. I went stiff immediately since I wasn’t expecting it. Within seconds, I had already calmed down and I hugged him back.
After minutes of being in each other’s embrace, we pulled away. He placed his hands tenderly on my cheek and stared at me with a gaze no other guy had ever done. A look filled with love and tenderness.
“I’m so sorry for what you had to pass through Catherine. It must have been so hard for you.” He muttered. I was genuinely surprised by his words. I thought he would be mad.
“This is the last time you’ll ever pass through such things. As long as I’m with you, I promise to let them pay for all the did to you.” He swore as he pulled me into another deep hug.
“I’ll stand by you till my last breath Catherine.”
