OLIVIA
“I hope you don’t expect me to walk away like that because that’s never going to happen. I will stay back and fight like my life depends on it. I am not going to fold my arms and watch Rene ruin my home,” I remained firm on my decision.
“You might need to stop raising your voice at me. I’m not the reason for your troubles. If you don’t want to stay calm and speak to me, I suggest you leave right away.” Escobar warned me. I didn’t realize how loud I was becoming until he told me.
“What do you suggest I do about this? I already told you what the problem is. Rene and Cyril are inseparable. Getting her out of Cyril’s ward is not going to be easy. What else do you want to know again? Are you suggesting that I inject him with sleeping pills?”
“Hell no!” I was quick to reject it.
“Then what? It’s obvious that you don’t understand what’s happening,” Escobar argued. I could tell that he was fed up with my presence and couldn’t wait for me to leave.
Quietly, I stood up to strategize. It dawned on me that violence won’t force Escobar to be on my side. Just like Cyril, Escobar is also stone-hearted. He keeps to his word, which makes it extremely difficult for him to reverse his decision.
I sighed to help me relax my restless head. Quietly, I sat down In front of Escobar.
With a calm voice, I pleaded. “I understand that you’re trying to protect your patient. I’m not forcing you to break your rules or ethics as a medical practitioner. I just want to say this to you, and once I’m done, you are free to make whatever decision you wish,” I paused to exhale and assemble my other utterances to avoid pissing him off.
“If I were your daughter or sister, would you fold your arms and watch me crumble, knowing that you could have done something to save my home?” I tossed the question that may get on his nerves.
The plan was to play the victim card and earn his empathy. So far, it wasn’t working. But the moment he lifted his head to gaze at me, I knew I just hit a spot inside his head.
“I understand that you’re mad at me, and I sincerely hope you will forgive me for making this about your family. My head was blank. I couldn’t possibly think straight to save my life. The moment that thought came into my head, I thought I should spill,” I quickly apologized in advance before he got mad at me.
“Why are you doing this?” He shook his head disdainfully. That was the moment I knew I finally succeeded in getting him on my side.
In the absence of more apologies, I forced a tear from my eyes to complete the mission. Words aren’t just enough to convince someone of his caliber. However, with my tears, he will be more obligated to drop a sweat for my sake.
“Stay right here while I fetch her. Be assured that it’s going to be the last. I’m not doing this for you anymore. Is that understood?” He issued the warning and walked away.
My Joy was endless. I knew something great was about to happen to me even without Rene’s arrival.
Escobar returned a few moments later, wearing a large frown.
My heart skipped for a second. I knew something terrible had happened to me.
“Don’t bother saying it. I already know what happened,” I was quick to accept defeat when the battle was still on.
“What are you talking about? I haven’t even said anything,” Escobar was confused.
“What do you mean?
I thought you came to report that Rene refused to come with you?”
“I can’t recall telling you that. She’s waiting for you outside my office. You may want to make your discussion brief. I knew the stress it took me to get her out,” Escobar revealed and restored my hopes just when I thought I had lost everything.
“And please, this should never happen again,” he warned me just as I was about to leave.
“Of course it won’t.” I winked at him and stepped outside to meet Rene. To my surprise, she was nowhere to be found.
“I thought Escobar said she was here?” I said to myself. I couldn’t return to Escobar not after assuring him that I was never going to bother him anymore with my problems.
I was unable to scream her name either to avoid waking all the resting patients.
I strolled around, checking every possible place to find Rene, and she wasn’t found.
Suddenly, my phone beeped. I saw a text from a strange number; “Meet me outside if you wanna talk,”
I pondered on the text and wondered if it was from Rene.
Reluctantly, I stepped outside only to find Rene from afar. She saw me first and waved at me to come meet her.
Slowly, I walked and prepared my emotional side.
“Please make it quick.
My husband is asleep. I don’t want him to wake up and not find me next to him,” Rene rudely spoke to me.
“Quite fascinating.
Do you now refer to him as your husband? I never for once thought about that,” my voice skipped.
At that point, I wasn’t certain if fighting for Cyril was the right thing. Rene appears to be confident in her utterances as though she had ulterior motives.
“What’s the matter?
I thought you wanted me to play the role of his wife. That’s precisely what I’m doing,” she sparked outrageously.
“Yeah, you’re right.
I apologize for pissing you off,” I quickly apologized. Apologizing to Rene was something I never imagined for a second.
“You got a few minutes to speak up. Just like I said, I would rather not let my husband wake up without seeing me. You already know what’s going to happen,” Rene repeated her utterances. It was obvious that she did it intentionally to spite me. I felt like punching her face each time she referred to Cyril as her husband.
