As soon as Rosalind spoke, she could distinctly hear the sound of a water glass hitting the floor on the other side. It seemed to have shattered, crisp and clear.
“You’re going abroad?” The driver expressed his surprise.
“Yes, I want to go out and see the world, take a walk,” Rosalind replied. Indeed, these years she had been solely focused on her work, tirelessly making money, forgetting to pause and look around. She had even neglected her beloved children quite a bit, and the thought filled her with guilt. Thus, after resigning, she decided to spend some time abroad solely to be with her children-to let them truly feel her motherly love, something she herself had missed out on as a child.
“Oh, that’s great,” the driver responded.
“By the way, let me recommend a few places in Jingtown that have great food. You can try them out while you’re inspecting the area.”
“Sounds good,” Rosalind agreed. She chatted with him at length, sharing everything she knew. The driver listened intently, not interrupting, and at one point Rosalind even thought he might have fallen asleep! Finally, overcome by fatigue, she said, “That’s about it. If you forget anything, you can ask me on Whatsapp.”
“Okay, you sleep now, good night,” he said.
“Hmm, good night.”
After hanging up, Rosalind suddenly realized she had unwittingly conveyed how tired she was. How had he so readily told her to sleep?
Moreover, his tone didn’t seem like that of a driver she had just met; rather, it was like that of an old friend. Nevertheless, she found the conversation quite interesting. Having someone listen to her so attentively felt good and relieved stress; it also helped him, killing two birds with one stone. Putting down her phone, Rosalind washed up and went to bed. She slept without dreams, and the next day she was awoken by Lion’s phone call. She had hoped to sleep in a bit, especially since she didn’t have to go to the construction site early.
“Morning! Aren’t you awake yet?”
“I am now, what’s up?” Rosalind sat up and quickly reached for her glasses on the bedside table. Since she couldn’t wear contacts while sleeping and didn’t need to go to the site the next day, she had retrieved her glasses.
“Hearing your sleepy voice, I know you just woke up! Sorry for calling so early, but I couldn’t hold back my excitement,” he had waited until nearly eight before calling.
“What’s wrong? Is there a problem at the site?”
“No! Get dressed and come downstairs, I’m at the entrance of the Dreamview Hotel. You’ll see.”
Rosalind stretched and hummed in acknowledgment before hanging up to wash and change clothes. She had thought it must be some oversight on her part that Lion had come looking for her, but as soon as she stepped downstairs, she saw his tall figure standing in front of her car, holding a white porcelain pot. It looked quite exquisite. Rosalind, unsure of what he was up to, walked over and asked, “Lion, what’s going on?”
On seeing her, Lion quickly stepped forward and handed her the object, his tone proud.
“Here, this is the breakfast I made for you after studying all night!” Rosalind was speechless. He extended his hand to show her the cuts and blisters, “Really, I’m not lying! I made it myself because you said you didn’t like the food sold outside. So, I decided to cook for you myself.”
Rosalind was truly surprised.
“Johnny told me that Ulric used to wake up early to make you breakfast,” Lion said with a smile, his eyes lifting playfully, “What Ulric can do, I can too.”
