Nelson reached out to take a bite, but Callie suddenly stopped him, looking at him pitifully. “This is my only successful dish, give me some face.”
Nelson nodded and then said to Kieran, “Call Ben over.”
Callie stomped her foot in frustration. “I wouldn’t poison you, even if I’m not great at cooking. Ben is so busy, don’t bother him.”
Nelson smiled and finally took a bite. Callie asked nervously, “How is it?”
Nelson had tasted all kinds of delicacies, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t surpass them. But it shouldn’t be bad to the point of being inedible.
Nelson chewed twice, swallowed, then put down his fork and turned to Callie seriously. “Actually, we don’t need you to cook at home. Promise me, don’t go into the kitchen again.”
That meant it didn’t taste good.
Callie understood and unhappily pushed him, then took a bite herself. She frowned, then savored it carefully, and smiled brightly at Nelson. “You’re lying, it’s delicious!”
Nelson’s prank succeeded, and he smiled while sipping water. “What kept you busy today?”
“Of course, digesting the big gift Mr. Oconnor sent.” Callie glanced at him sideways. “Kieran said you were in a meeting today, at Oconnor Group?”
The man paused slightly while drinking water, then nodded. “Yes.”
He then asked, “Do you know Vanco?”
Callie was puzzled for a moment. “I think I do, why?”
“Vanco is in trouble. Marilyn works there. She came to me for help a few days ago,” Nelson said frankly.
Callie was stunned and stared at his eyes, then smiled. “Did you help her?”
“I did.”
“Why are you telling me this? Aren’t you afraid of angering me?”
Nelson looked at her too. “I hope you can understand.”
They stared at each other for a moment before Callie slowly asked, “You met her.”
“Yes, she waited in the heavy rain and got a high fever.”
His honesty made her feel clear-headed instead of jealous. She still asked slowly, “Aren’t you afraid I’ll be jealous?”
Nelson took her cold hand and played with it in his palm. “My dear wife, I belong to you entirely. What is there to be jealous of?”
Callie was pulled into his arms. He buried his head in her neck, inhaling her scent and seemingly sighed. “Callie, I will not betray you.”
This declaration made her heart tremble. Nelson told her he would not betray her.
It was absolute submission.
Callie reached out and touched his head. His hair was stiff, and this gesture felt like petting a puppy.
With him saying these words, she couldn’t care about anything else but standing by his side, understanding him, and supporting him.
“Okay.”
About a week later.
At Vanco.
Many elders over fifty had been waiting in the conference room for a long time until this young man finished his other business and came to Vanco.
Everyone was familiar with Nelson and feared Oconnor Group. But the one sitting in the main seat was Anthony. His demeanor was that of a typical businessman as he read out the rules one by one. “It’s late now. If there are no objections, please sign.”
Nelson sat on one side with his eyes closed, occasionally opening them to look at the orchids in the potted plant, appearing somewhat listless.
Marilyn stood directly opposite the conference table, clearly seeing his actions with complex feelings.
Someone sighed, seemingly helpless about Vanco’s decline, followed by the rustling sound of signing documents.
