Monica’s POV
THREE DAYS LATER
I had just stepped out of the bathroom when Ethan walked into the room with his phone in his ears.
Curious to know what he was saying and who he was talking about, I pretended to be drying my hair but my attention was fully on his discussion.
“When will you be here? She needs to sign those documents today” Ethan’s sharp voice roared in the living room and I wondered who he was talking to that way.
Soon he hung up the call and came to stand behind me, staring at my reflection in the mirror.
“You smell so nice” he uttered as he bent down and sniffed my shoulders. I smiled and didn’t say a word and he continued “Get dressed and come downstairs in ten minutes, there’s something I want you to see”
“Okay but what is it?” I asked, staring back at his reflection in the mirror.
“It’s a surprise,” he said, then placed two kisses on my bare shoulder “See you downstairs” he uttered finally before walking out of our room and closing the door behind him.
I looked at my reflection in the mirror as I wondered what he might have been planning. Was the surprise a good one or a bad one?
I couldn’t help the thoughts that ran through my head. My thoughts drifted to Nicholas and I decided to fill him in about the recent happening so I dipped my hand under my drawer and brought out my phone which I usually used to contact him.
I placed the phone on my ears and waited for Nicholas to pick up as the phone rang.
“Hi honey,” Nicholas said the instant he picked up.
“Okay this will be quick but Ethan says he has a surprise for me and I have no idea of what it might be. I’m nervous and scared that maybe he found out about something bad and_”
“Honey” Nicholas called instantly and I stopped talking “Calm down, you’re thinking too much” Nicholas added and I sighed.
“I’m just nervous and scared. He has never given me a surprise before and now, he suddenly wants to show me something so I don’t know what to think” I said.
“Don’t think about bad things Monica. Be calm and composed. Nothing bad is going to happen. Ethan has a surprise for you so I want you to go meet him and know what he has for you”
“Okay,” I said, sighing and gathering courage at the same time.
“I’ll see you later today right?” He asked.
“Yes, you will” I replied and hung up instantly.
I rushed to the closet instantly to get some clothes I was going to wear downstairs. Ethan had a surprise for me and I hoped it was a good surprise.
“Oh she is here,” Ethan said the instant his gaze landed on me with a smile on his face.
I saw a man who was in a Black suit with white sleeves. He held a laptop which I assumed was his and a big black envelope beside him on the chair.
“Hello Mrs Knight,” the young man said with a broad smile on his face.
“Hi,” I said, staring at Ethan confusingly while moving to the seat by his side. “Darling, what’s this about?” I asked with a curious gaze and voice.
“It’s nothing serious darling. Here open this and read through” Ethan said, taking the black envelope from the man who sat opposite us and stretching his hand toward me
I took the envelope, hesitating at first before opening the envelope to find words I couldn’t understand. “What’s this?” I asked, impatient to read through the three stapled paper
“It’s a transfer document ma’am” the man whom I suspected was a lawyer said.
“A transfer document?” I asked, feeling confused the more.
“It’s a document stating that Mr Ethan is transferring eighty percent of his company shares to you which makes you the highest shareholder of his company after him” the man explained and I stared at him in shock.
Was it possible that Ethan was making me his next of kin or was I getting everything wrong?
“Is this like saying I’m Ethan’s next of kin?” I asked and the young man laughed slightly.
“It’s not that but use something close to that. In simple words, If Mr. Ethan here ever dies, you are the next person to take over the knight group as the highest shareholder” the lawyer said and I stared at Ethan in shock.
“Ethan this is too much” I yelled, my eyes almost bulging out of their socket.
“This is nothing compared to what I have in store for you my love. This is nothing” he repeated and I still felt this was a dream.
Was this how much he trusted and loved me? Did Ethan love me this much to make me an heir to his company
“Stop thinking about this darling,” Ethan said then shifted his gaze to his lawyer “What should she do?” He asked and the lawyer brought out a blue pen.
“Please Mrs Knight, I’d love for you to sign here, here, and here,” the lawyer said and I just held the pen tightly, staring at the paper on my thigh
“Please don’t refuse this darling. This is my gift to you and I will be the happiest man on earth if you accept this” Ethan said and I proceeded to sign
The instant I signed, he placed a kiss on my cheeks and smiled happily at me. I just faked a smile, still shocked by the surprise. This was a surprise and a good one at that.
It was a good thing that I was going to see Nicholas later in the day. He surely was going to be happy about this sort of news. This was worth celebrating.
I waited at a hidden corner for Nicholas but it’s been thirteen minutes since our agreed time of meeting and he still wasn’t here yet.
I raised my phone for the sixth time and dialed his number again. The phone rang several times before he picked up.
“Where are you?” I asked, getting upset that he still hadn’t shown up.
Distracted by the call, I didn’t notice the three men who were walking toward me. I thought they were passing by until someone placed something in my nose and my phone fell off my hands.
I struggled to get the person’s huge and rough hand from my nose but suddenly I felt weak and was consumed by total darkness.
“Monica, are you there? Hello,” Nicholas’s voice was the last voice I heard before everything became pitch black.
