Monica’s POV
TWO DAYS LATER
I was alone in the house again laying on the bed and thinking of what happened yesterday.
All fingers were pointing at Ethan. Nicholas mentioned that Ethan was lying to me and Mia said the same thing yesterday.
I don’t know who to believe. Everyone is saying a different thing. I didn’t expect Mia to say she was my sister because Ethan had previously said she was his sister.
I need proof. I needed solid evidence to finally decide who was lying and who wasn’t. I had a deep feeling in my gut that Ethan was lying but I still doubted Nicholas.
I could remember the day I arrived here, when I asked about pictures, Ethan told me something that didn’t add up.
When he showed me my room, I didn’t see any of my belongings in the room. No picture, no clothes, no shoes nothing that showed that I even stayed in that room.
The next day, he got me a phone and when I asked about my old phone, he said I lost it. How could I have lost my phone? Was I a kid?
Let’s say I lost the phone but the constant evidence springing up against him was becoming too much to overlook.
If indeed Ethan was lying and everyone was right about him, that means he was deceiving but for what reason, I had no idea.
The fact that so much was going on under my nose and I still couldn’t tell the liar from the truth was very exhausting.
I sighed as I stared at the phone in my hand, the one Ethan got for me. Looking at the phone, I remembered Nicholas’s words about Ethan putting a tracker in my phone which meant I couldn’t just go anywhere I like.
I put my hand into my drawer and got the old phone Nicholas claimed was my phone.
The phone indeed looked old and weird in my hand. I went through the contact list and saw a lot of numbers I didn’t expect to find.
I saw Anthony’s contact, Aunt Ella’s contact, Uncle Karl’s contact, Fiona’s contact, and a number I set as my emergency number.
The number said ‘honey sugar”. I stared at the number, racking my brain to see who I could have saved at Honey Sugar but nothing came to my head.
I glanced at my phone, staring at the contact, curiosity engulfing me as I clicked the contact on the phone and it started ringing.
My heart raced in my chest as the phone began to ring. “Hello” I heard a deep familiar voice from the other end of the line and I tried to figure out who it was but I couldn’t
“Hello,” the person said again and my eyes widened instantly as I suddenly realized who the owner of the voice was “Monica can you hear me?” He said and I ended the call instantly.
I stared at the phone number again and concluded that I was the one who saved Nicholas’s number as honey sugar.
This was my old phone and I must have had a close and romantic relationship with Nicholas to save his name this way.
A knock on the door suddenly jolted up out of my thoughts I almost jumped up from the bed in shock, my body jerking slightly. I closed my eyes as I tried to keep my breath steady
“Who is it?” I asked my hand on my chest.
“It’s me, ma’am. You have a package ma’am” the calm voice of a maid sounded from the door and I hid the phone in the drawer.
“I’m coming down now,” I said, and I heard the retreating steps of the maid. I took my phone in my hands and walked towards the door.
I stepped outside the door of my room to see the maid downstairs waiting for me “Who is at the door?” I asked again
“It’s a delivery for you ma’am” she replied.
“A delivery?” I asked “But I didn’t order anything,” I said, finally taking the last stair and looking at the maid who took a small box from the table and stretched it towards me.
“Thank you,” I said, taking the box from here and looking at it with suspicious eyes and a curious gaze.
I opened the box, my heart pounding against my chest in fear and curiosity and I frowned when I saw a small black book.
I looked at the name on the package
Fur frau Sterling Monica
It was a mix of my first name and last name and I became confused even more. I was married to Ethan but why was I bearing Nicholas’s last name? It just didn’t make any sense.
I took out the book from the box and opened the first empty page. I flipped to the second page and saw strange words I couldn’t understand.
For you, Monica
I turned to the other page and found words written with blue ink.
Dear Monica, if you’re reading this, it means the surgery went well and you lost your memories. You wrote this down when you were in the hospital so you could remember those who you love and those who love you.
I stared at the book in shock, my hands trembling as I looked at the small black book in my hand.
Did I write this? Was this written before my surgery?
Firstly, don’t treat Nicholas like a stranger when you wake up. He is your husband and the best any woman can pray for. You have two beautiful kids who have beautiful blue and gorgeous eyes.
I instantly felt a pang of guilt as I read the first line of the sentence. I treated Nicholas like a stranger and I even slapped his best friend. I told him to his face that I didn’t know him and that he shouldn’t call me honey.
Nicholas is my husband? I asked, my voice trembling as I read further, shifting my gaze back to the book.
Three people you should stay away from are Ethan your ex-husband, Mia your stepsister, and Greg, your husband’s brother. They are all dangerous and are after your life.
I instantly took the box, and the package and took the stairs hurriedly as I dashed into my room, not shutting the door behind me.
I forcefully dragged the drawer open and called the number that I called previously. Nicholas picked up on the first ring but didn’t say anything.
“Hello,” I said, my heart racing in my chest with a mix of guilt and fear.
“Hello Monica” Nicholas’s calm and deep voice blared from the phone.
“We need to talk now,” I said into the phone and he remained quiet.
