Despite wearing her most beautiful dress, she still seemed a bit overshadowed while left in the courtyard. When Tom Fritz walked into the living room with his arm around Agnes’ shoulder, Jane happened to see this scene. Her expression remained calm, but a gentle smile flickered in her eyes. In the transition from darkness to light, her son and this girl looked quite well-matched.
Upon entering, Agnes met his mother’s gaze and became a bit embarrassed. Tom, however, kept his arm around her shoulder.
“Mom.”
“Tom, I would like to have a word with Agnes alone, if that’s okay?” Jane asked with a kind smile. Tom thought about it and realized it wouldn’t be appropriate to refuse. He turned to look at the girl in his arms; Agnes also turned to look at him and showed no resistance.
“Alright,” Tom Fritz agreed.
Jane extended her hand to Agnes.
“Come on, Bubu, let’s go upstairs.”
Agnes smiled and placed her hand in Jane’s palm, then followed her upstairs.
This scene was also noticed by Lisa as she walked towards the living room. She stopped in her tracks in the courtyard, staring blankly at the two going upstairs. Had Agnes received Aunt Jane’s approval?
Lisa stood alone in the cold night breeze, her thoughts racing and feelings of loss overwhelming her.
Upstairs, Jane led Agnes into her own bedroom.
“Wait here,” she said. This was an extremely private space where she rarely brought anyone else. Releasing Agnes’ hand, Jane opened a drawer and began searching for something inside.
Agnes was stunned by the bedroom’s decor-neat, luxurious, and cozy, exuding the aura of a wealthy family. It was no wonder that this mother radiated elegance from within; such a temperament couldn’t be imitated but was nurtured by a life of material abundance and love.
Although Agnes had only come back with him tonight, she could feel that this home was filled with love.
“Agnes, this bracelet is for you.”
Jane closed the drawer and approached with a jade bracelet. Before Agnes could react, Jane took her hand to put it on her.
Realizing what was happening, Agnes quickly pulled her hand back from the middle-aged woman’s grasp. Jane looked slightly surprised and raised her eyes to meet hers.
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s too valuable; I can’t accept it.”
Based on her experience writing stories, this was likely an heirloom bracelet-wealthy families always had such items.
This reason puzzled Jane.
“What does its value matter? You’re not just anyone; you’re the girl my son likes. Isn’t it appropriate for me to give you a meeting gift?”
Agnes looked into her sincere eyes and felt overwhelmed. This was supposed to be an act, but did they have to play it so genuinely? How would it end? Was she deceiving everyone’s emotions?
“Auntie…”
“Bubu,” Jane smiled again and took her hand once more. She spoke with great satisfaction, “You truly like Tom; I can see that. And when Tom is with you, he is genuinely happy.”
Agnes felt unworthy of such words and didn’t know what to do.
“But the bracelet is too valuable; I really can’t accept it.”
Such a bracelet should be reserved for Jane’s future daughter-in-law. Moreover, Agnes only temporarily regarded Tom as her little Mr. Cat, which was why there was such deep affection in her eyes when she looked at him…
