OLIVIA
“There she is,” Kate pointed at someone who was visible to her sight only
“Who? I can’t find anyone,” I strained my eyes just to have a glimpse of whom Kate was referring to.
“Rene of course.
There she is.
She finally stepped outside. As we speak, she and Adrian are having a conversation,” Kate explained further. For the second time, she has proven to be more capable than me. I never imagined that a time like this would come where I would be so dependent on Kate.
“It worked. The plan was effective. They’re about to go inside. Should we step in immediately or still wait to observe?” Kate asked me. Coming from someone I depend on, we might as well stay clueless forever.
“You tell me
You are the boss here.
What do you think?” I returned the question to Kate and gave her another opportunity to showcase her brilliance.
“Are you sure about this? I have a bad feeling about this. I don’t want to mess things up,” Kate was reluctant. I completely understood her reaction. Situations like this don’t come too often.
“I insist.
You tell us what to do.
You’ve been making the best decisions for us lately, that has been helpful. Why should I change that?” I questioned her.
“Let’s go quickly before it becomes too late,” Kate replied before I was done talking. She’s been waiting for this moment to finally take charge.
Arriving at the doorway, my heart skipped. I could hear it pounding faster, like the drums of war. One minute it looks like we are in total control and the next minute, I feel like giving up.
I couldn’t knock on the door. My knuckles were literally shaking.
“Do you feel this is a good idea?” I whispered to Kate. It’s funny how we’ve suddenly swapped mindset. For once in my life, I saw myself in Kate while I totally portrayed her character.
“We got this, trust me.
We’ve come too far.
We can’t possibly give up now,” Kate patted my shoulder and smiled at me.
Before I got the chance to ask the next question, Kate hurriedly landed a knock on Rene’s door.
“What did you just do?” I fumed at Kate. As much as I enjoyed her immense contribution so far, I wasn’t comfortable with her bold step. She seemed to have taken advantage of the privilege bestowed on her.
“I’m sorry.
I had to do something.
You were slowing us down,” she explained to justify her actions.
As we argued, Rene stepped outside.
“You again?
What the heck are you doing in my home?” Rene yelled at me. I couldn’t retaliate due to what was at stake. If getting insulted by Rene would provide a lasting solution to my problem, I would be willing to take the risk.
“Can we please go inside and talk? What I’m about to say is best discussed behind closed doors,” I pleaded.
“No way I’m letting you inside my home. Have you come to kill me? You got 60 seconds to speak, or I’ll be forced to shut the door against you,” she warned me. I waited for Adrian to show up and convince Rene to let me in, and he never did. It’s almost like he forgot about the plan and decided to woo Rene instead.
“I understand that you’re mad at me. From my heart, I say I’m deeply sorry,” I apologized for doing absolutely nothing. I figured it was the best way to get her to cooperate with me.
“Is that what you came here for? Just to apologize? You’ve done nothing wrong to warrant my forgiveness. Is there something you’re not telling me?” Rene rejected my apology for the obvious reason.
“It’s about Cyril.
He was involved in an accident that was life-threatening,” I revealed. It wasn’t the manner I intended to break the news to Rene.
I just had to speak up due to limited time. Rene was prepared to kick me out if I hadn’t said anything.
“So?” Rene rolled her eyes. Her response was shocking to me. I expected her to be teary about Cyril’s condition. Obviously, she isn’t even concerned about Cyril.
I wished I had recorded her voice. I was going to play it to Cyril for him to know the kind of girl he’s cheating on me with.
“I just told you that Cyril was involved in a ghastly accident.” I repeated my utterances just to be certain if she heard me the first time.
“I wasn’t deaf.
I heard you for the first time. Your husband was involved in a ghastly accident. How has that got to do with me? Did he say I caused the accident?” Rene spoke in a harsh tone.
“No, he didn’t. But…” I refrained from speaking about what was on my mind. What I wanted to say might cause havoc. So far, Rene is the perfect solution to my problem. I would rather not do anything to piss her off.
“You know what?
I think I should go straight to the point,” I digressed from the discourse. Rene’s attitude towards me changed my plan and rendered me clueless.
“You better do it because you’re beginning to bore me with your stupid talk.” She hissed at me. It got on my last nerves. I decided not to react, knowing that I would be out of her sight in a bit.
“Cyril suffered severe brain damage that metamorphosed to amnesia.
As we speak, Cyril thinks you’re his wife, while he recognizes me as his secretary. He won’t stop chanting your name. The doctor asked that I come fetch you to help restore Cyril’s memory,” I hit the nail on the head without beating around the bush.
“This is ridiculous,” She smirked and shut the door against me. She showed up a few seconds after with Adrian.
“Do you know these people?” She asked Adrian while pointing towards me and Kate. I winked at Adrian not to respond immediately, even though it wasn’t part of the plan. I would rather prefer that Adrian and I remain anonymous on the issue. That would be easy to convince Rene to grant our request.
