Chapter 440: It’s Callie

Book:Married The Day We Met Published:2024-11-10

Recently, Jaquan had been traveling to resolve issues with Scott Group. He had just returned to Ylosea by private jet and went to see the old man first. As always, he was gaunt. In front of the prison guards, he slapped Jaquan directly.
Jaquan didn’t dodge and took the slap head-on.
“How dare you touch the original shares of Scott Group, you unfilial son!”
Jaquan licked his lips with his tongue and tasted blood.
“I had no other choice.”
He rarely showed a lack of confidence. His silence at this moment softened Mr. Scott’s heart. He sighed and, with his handcuffed hands, cupped Jaquan’s face lovingly.
“You’re in the prime of your life; it’s time to find someone to marry. Jaquan, if Faithview Group doesn’t work out, think of another way. It doesn’t matter if I fall because of the Oconnor family, but you can’t.”
The weight of his words was heavy.
Outside the prison, Mikayla had been waiting in the car. When she saw him get in, she was stunned. “Mr. Scott, what happened to you…”
Jaquan’s face was extremely gloomy. He took a tissue and wiped his mouth clean. “Let’s talk business.”
Mikayla handed over the latest newspaper. “Baxter has fallen from power.”
Jaquan paused, took the newspaper, and read it. He didn’t believe the surface-level articles. “What’s the reason?”
“He has always been associated with Faithview Group. Recently, Faithview Group encountered difficulties, and he inevitably got involved. They say he was investigated at this critical moment.”
“Such a coincidence?” Jaquan folded the newspaper and tossed it aside. “There were no signs before I left Ylosea. In just a few days, they’ve uncovered everything he’s done. The higher-ups are quick. Who’s behind this?”
Hearing this, Mikayla nodded cautiously, glancing at his gloomy face. After a long pause, she finally dared to speak. “There’s a rumor that Baxter messed with Nelson’s woman.”
Jaquan suddenly stared at her, a storm brewing in his eyes. He could hardly believe it. “Marilyn?”
Mikayla lowered her head. “They say it’s Callie.”
In an instant, the storm erupted. Jaquan’s temple throbbed as he asked in a strained voice, “Did he succeed?”
“No, they say Nelson arrived in time. Baxter got beaten up and hadn’t recovered before he was arrested.”
Jaquan leaned back in the rear seat and slowly closed his sore eyes. It was hard to tell what he felt, perhaps relief.
Mikayla gathered her courage and continued, “It is somewhat related to you too. I found out that Callie was taken away by Karlie.”
Just as she finished speaking, Jaquan’s private phone rang. He squinted at the number and answered after a moment. “Nelson.”
The weather was nice today. Nelson had some rare free time and was watering flowers in the garden of Paucaster Villa Complex with graceful and fluid movements.
“I heard you returned to Ylosea. Is everything going well?” He held the phone in one hand, asking casually.
Callie had just woken up from an afternoon nap. After a few days of rest, she was in much better shape. When she didn’t find Nelson around, Nancy told her that he was watering flowers in the garden.
“He seems to be in good spirits,” Callie said with a smile as she was about to go downstairs when she noticed something in Nancy’s hand. “Isn’t that my hair tie?”
“Yes, ma’am. It’s broken, so I was about to throw it away.”
Callie hadn’t paid much attention but took a closer look and found an unfamiliar hair tie mixed in. “This one doesn’t seem to be mine. Where did you get it?”
“I found it while sorting out the luggage you and Mr. Nelson brought back from the hotel.”
