He was well aware of the company’s recent projects, their profits, and more. He always went out of his way to retain the company’s talents and was very approachable during discussions.
His playful demeanor was merely a facade.
It made people let their guard down around him.
Rosalind dared not get too involved with such a man. She knew her own capabilities and tactics were no match for his.
“Lion, I think you only think well of me because you don’t really know me,” Rosalind said, managing her emotions and maintaining a polite smile as she subtly created some distance between them. “Johnny might have told you about Ulric and me. I don’t know if he mentioned… I broke up with Ulric. I was the one who asked for a divorce because I fell for another man.”
“He did mention it was because you fell out of love,” Rosalind was about to speak when Lion continued, “But I don’t believe it.”
He believed he had never misjudged anyone!
Lion had observed Rosalind carefully; otherwise, he wouldn’t have pursued a woman who was already married, especially one he genuinely liked. Business people rarely fell so easily!
“The truth remains, whether you believe it or not. You can ask Ulric.”
“I won’t ask him. You two are history,” Lion said, spreading his hands. Knowing the conversation could only get more tense from here, he lowered his voice and said softly, “I think you’ve misunderstood me. I have no ulterior motives, nor do I intend to use this situation to force you to be with me. I just… want a chance from you.”
Rosalind pressed her lips together, silent.
“Just one chance. If it turns out we’re not right for each other, I won’t insist anymore. Look, you’re single, I’m single-why reject me outright? Maybe after spending some time together, you might find I’m not that bad.”
Lion’s words were quite humble, and Rosalind knew that if she rejected him harshly again, it might anger him.
In high society, one must always save face. Too harsh a rejection could make things spiral out of control.
Mainly, she feared Lion would tell Johnny.
That would be beyond her control.
“Lion, there’s a lot going on with the projects recently, as you can see. How about this, when I’m less busy at work, I’ll let you know my decision, okay?”
Lion gave an OK gesture, “Fine, I will wait for you.”
Having finally managed to send him away, Rosalind felt as if she had just fought a battle.
The situation was developing in a direction she could barely control. She had to carefully consider her next steps, or it would be too late when the enemy was at her gates.
…
Seeing Rosalind finally relent was a kind of progress for Lion.
He drove to the hotel where Johnny was staying; the man had drunk too much last night and was still not up.
Upon seeing Lion, Johnny, wearing a robe, got up and rubbed his sleepy eyes, “Your tolerance has improved, drinking last night and standing here today as if nothing happened.”
“It’s the joy of good news that invigorates a person.”
“Hmm?”
“Nothing much, you’re a guest from afar, and I had to come see you. I’ve just ordered breakfast to be sent up. Go freshen up.”
