She handed over a small paper bag. “I noticed Nelson hasn’t eaten. Please give this to him. If he tells you to throw it away, remind him to eat.”
The secretary was about to refuse when she interrupted, “Don’t forget, my last name is Ellison.”
That surname was enough to intimidate.
The secretary hesitantly took the bag, and Marilyn bent down to thank him.
When he handed it to Nelson, he explained the situation. Nelson barely reacted and simply said, “Throw it away.”
The secretary was taken aback, thinking she had guessed Nelson’s reaction correctly.
Before discarding it, he looked inside the bag. It contained some delicate snacks that Nelson usually liked, along with a note.
Nelson didn’t even glance at it…
The secretary steeled himself and threw the bag into the trash.
Marilyn saw the whole scene from a distance, turned her gaze away, and felt a pang of sadness.
The meeting would last all day, meaning Marilyn could stay in the same place as Nelson for the entire day.
Although they weren’t together in the true sense, this was enough to make Marilyn happy.
Due to work reasons, the secretary often ran into Marilyn. He felt pressured, afraid she would ask him to convey something unwelcome to Nelson again. However, she didn’t.
Marilyn seemed to have come to her senses. She treated him with polite professionalism and said nothing more.
She was responsible for overseeing the entire meeting, a significant task assigned by her superior. Normally, she would be cautious and not aggressive, but since this meeting involved Nelson, she gladly accepted.
Previously, she had already garnered much dissatisfaction from her colleagues. Now, their anger only increased, causing more trouble for Marilyn.
Human relationships are the same everywhere. Moreover, she deliberately hid her identity, leading to a lack of respect from others.
In the evening, under a sky filled with sunset hues, Marilyn sat in a corner by the window in the hotel’s buffet restaurant, working on her laptop with only a cup of black coffee beside her.
She was focused, and the sunset light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows bathed her face in a gentle glow.
At that moment, two colleagues joined her at the table and softly called out, “Marilyn?”
Marilyn looked up.
In fact, these colleagues were more experienced than Marilyn. They were the most dissatisfied when the responsibility for this meeting was given to Marilyn.
Suddenly so gentle, Marilyn squinted her eyes. “What’s wrong?”
They looked troubled and hesitated for a while before slowly speaking. “The article we’re about to publish needs to be reviewed by Oconnor Group. But we just discovered a significant error… Could you help explain or find a way to retrieve it for correction?”
Marilyn understood. She thought there must be a reason for their sudden kindness-it was another difficult request.
She sneered. “Such an important article, and you’re so careless? This could affect the entire company!”
She knew Nelson’s temperament well. He couldn’t tolerate mistakes, especially in minor matters. If he discovered this error, their company would lose the reporting rights for this event and potentially face future repercussions-a loss that would affect everyone.
The women in front of her were genuinely panicked and softened their tone. “We didn’t do it on purpose. We just noticed it after submitting it. We saw you seem to know Mr. Oconnor’s secretary? Could you help us?”
They steeled themselves and continued, “We’re all in this together. If something goes wrong, you’ll be responsible too.”
