Nicholas POV
THE NEXT MORNING
“Hello Mr Nicholas” I heard Dr Rudolf say the instant I picked up his call. I’ve been waiting for his call or email for the past thirty-two hours.
I couldn’t help but feel anxious. I was excited and also anxious. “Hello Mr. Rudolf, I’m glad to finally hear from you”

The instant I got off the phone with Doctor Rudolf from Germany, I stood still, unable to move from the sudden news I heard.
I couldn’t make a decision alone. I needed to speak with someone and tell them what was going on.
I certainly didn’t expect what Doctor Rudolf told me. Was this a bad news or a good news? I asked myself.
I needed to speak with someone and Uncle Karl was the first person who came to mind I quickly sent him a message
Hello uncle, please can we meet and talk today? It’s about Monica.
I sent the message and dialed Anthony’s number instantly ” Are you busy?” I asked, as soon as he picked up on the first ring.
“I’m always busy buddy but what’s up?” He said.
“Can you come down to my office?” I asked.
“I can’t bro. I’m choked up here and_”
“Please, Anthony. This is important. It’s about Monica” I said again, interrupting him from speaking any further.
“From the sound of your voice, I know this is important so I’m going to come over to your company and meet you in your office”
“Thank you. I appreciate the sacrifice” I said, feeling grateful for his taking out time to come over.
“Don’t thank me yet. I’m not going to stay long. Thirty minutes in your office and I will be on my way back to my office. Keep that in mind”
“I’ll keep that in mind, Anthony. I’ll see you soon?” I asked.
“Yeah, you will” he responds and hangs up instantly.
From what Doctor Rudolf had stated earlier on, I needed advice on what to do. This issue concerned Monica and I didn’t want to make any mistakes or decisions that will hurt her and me.

“So what is this meeting about” Anthony asked as he walked into my office, not forgetting to shut the door behind him.
“As I said earlier it’s about Monica,” I said, my voice low but steady.
“What about Monica? Is she okay” Uncle Karl asked, concern laced in his voice?
“She is fine but not for long,” I said sadly then turned to Uncle Karl “You remember the surgeon I told you about that I invested in his research”
“Yes, I remember” Uncle Karl shook his head positively.
“The doctor called today and said Monica could perform the surgery successfully and survive,” I said, letting the cat out of the bag as I watched a smile appear across Anthony’s face
“That’s great news,” Uncle Karl said, his voice sharp and laced with excitement.
“Yes, it is. I was relieved when I heard it” I said, my voice barely above a whisper as I sighed sadly.
“But you don’t look happy son. What is the problem? We finally have a solution to help Monica out and she gets to live but you don’t seem happy about it” Uncle Karl said, his eyes staring at me with concern.
“There was an after-surgery effect and the effect isn’t a happy news for one to celebrate over,” I said.
“What is it? Spill it out Nicholas and stop keeping us on our toes. Your silence is killing me” Anthony said, his voice sharp as he frowned at the fact that I was beating around the bush
“The surgeon said after she receives the surgery, she was going to lose all of her memories and will never be able to get them back” I finally dropped the bombshell.
“What!” Uncle Karl explained “All of them?” He asked again, staring at me in disbelief.
“All of her memories uncle. She gets to live yet she doesn’t remember anything or anyone after she wakes up and I don’t know what to do” I said, dropping my head on my desk as my thoughts were in a world of confusion.
“Was she going to lose her memories forever?” Anthony asked, finding it hard to believe what I had just said.
“Yes, she is,” I responded.
“Who else knows about this?” Uncle Karl asked.
“No one but us uncle” I replied.
“Then I suggest we keep this to ourselves but the issue now is that if we tell Monica about this side effect, I don’t think she will go ahead with the surgery”
“That’s where my confusion starts from Uncle. I know Monica very well and I’m one hundred percent sure that when she finds out about this effect, she will not go ahead with the surgery”
“And for her to survive the remaining days of her life, she needs to get the surgery as soon as possible,” Uncle Karl said.
“At least losing her memory forever is better than losing her forever right?” Anthony said, his gaze fixed on me as I fought an inner battle about what decision to make.
This wasn’t what I wanted. This wasn’t what I prayed for. This wasn’t what I hoped for but life had her plans for I and Monica.
I prayed for a chance at survival and the chance came but it came with a price. If I don’t allow Monica to take the surgery, it’s only a matter of days before she dies and if she takes the surgery, I might look like a stranger to her once she wakes up.
It’s going to take lots of time to make her see me as her husband trust me and love me all over again.
“Son I think you should let her take the surgery at least, this was better than death,” Uncle Karl said.
“I agree with Uncle Karl too. Seeing her alive was the most important right now but I suggest you don’t tell her yet about the after-effect of the surgery. Just let her know that you both are going to Germany soon and she should get prepared for the surgery”
Not telling her about the after-effects of the surgery was also a good idea but also a bad idea. I had promised Monica to not keep any secret from her
“No, I don’t think that’s a good idea. You can tell her as soon as you arrive in Germany but don’t tell her before going because if you do, she won’t push through with the surgery” Uncle Karl suggested.
I liked Uncle Karl’s idea but I was scared about her reaction. Monica wasn’t going to be happy about this news.
My biggest fear right now is the fact that she might not go through with the surgery even after I tell her in Germany.
“Thank you, Uncle Karl. I think I would go with your advice” I said then turned my gaze to Anthony “Thank you Anthony for showing up despite your busy schedule. I’m grateful” I said, appreciating each of them
I was glad to have these two intelligent men in my life and I will always and forever respect them.
I sighed as I finally made a decision. I was going to tell Monica about the after-effects after we arrive in Germany.
