Chris Shelby was extremely confident in his driving skills; after all, he had once been dubbed a racing god. James’ car, modified to look domineering and aggressive, caught his eye. Chris Shelby gave the vehicle a thorough inspection and shook his head slightly. James knew nothing about cars; he only cared about their appearance, neglecting their performance.
James approached, uneasy, and asked, “Chris Shelby, are you sure you can win?”
Chris Shelby rolled his eyes and replied, “Enough with the nonsense! This is a bet on the car, right? Bet ten billion dollars for me!”
James was stunned. Although they were both young masters from prominent Middleton families, typically they gambled tens or hundreds of millions just for fun. A bet of ten billion was exceedingly rare.
“Chris Shelby, don’t joke around. Can you even produce ten billion dollars?” James said with disbelief.
Chris Shelby pulled out a black card and tossed it over, “Bet ten billion dollars for me. If I win, I’ll give you one billion!”
Hearing this, James’ face lit up with joy. Although he was a young master of the Vance family, Caspian Vance ran a tight ship and didn’t allow extravagant spending. For James, a typical monthly allowance was about a million dollars-a substantial amount for the average person, but hardly sufficient for a profligate heir like him. Now, with Chris Shelby offering him one billion, it equated to more than a year’s allowance.
“Alright!” James took the black card and hurried off to place the bet.
Watching James’ retreating figure, Chris Shelby shook his head helplessly. He wouldn’t have bothered if not for the fact that James was Candace’s cousin. Chris felt a persistent guilt towards Candace; they had been childhood sweethearts, and he had nearly brought ruin upon her.
Suddenly, a yellow Porsche roared up and parked beside Chris Shelby. He glanced at it and his eyes lit up. To his discerning eye, the driver of the Porsche was undoubtedly a skilled racer. He was surprised to find such hidden talents in Middleton’s second-generation elite. He noticed the driver was a woman, but due to the dim light, he couldn’t see her face clearly. However, Chris felt a sense of familiarity with her.
Meanwhile, the female driver glanced at Chris Shelby and flashed a mischievous smile.
“Mr. Shelby, we meet again!” If Chris had heard her, he would have been utterly astonished; the driver was none other than Seraphina, the daughter of Archer Wintersong!
The race cars were ready, and the onlookers began to shout excitedly. The race had attracted young masters from all the major families of Middleton. An official holding a starter pistol was ready.
Bang! The gunshot marked the beginning of the race. In an instant, the cars shot forward like arrows released from their bows. Chris Shelby accelerated to ninety miles per hour within seconds. Nearly twenty to thirty cars were speeding down the same road, a perilous endeavor.
Chris Shelby was in no rush, casually following the sports cars ahead. Suddenly, he noticed the yellow Porsche that had been tailing him. With a cigarette dangling from his lips, Chris Shelby began to puff out smoke leisurely. Seeing Chris Shelby so relaxed, James was visibly anxious.
Though he was also into racing, the drivers in this race were all practitioners. Moreover, Crow’s Nest Pass was notorious for its steep slopes and sharp turns. A slight misstep could send a car and its driver plummeting off a cliff. Countless accidents had claimed lives here every year.
Now, James had pinned all his hopes on Chris Shelby. If Chris Shelby lost, James would be thoroughly humiliated. He would never be able to hold his head high among Middleton’s elite again.
The road became increasingly narrow as they approached the first sharp turn of Crow’s Nest Pass. Normally, it was a place where overtaking was too risky.
Chris Shelby, driving a Lamborghini, was not worried at all. The race route wound from the mountain top down to the base and then back up again. The one who reached the summit first would be declared the winner. Regular racers knew that descending to the base was less dangerous compared to the treacherous climb back to the top.
Soon, Chris Shelby reached the base of the mountain.
At the mountain top, the entire race was being live-streamed via drones. Yet, Chris Shelby remained unhurried, trailing at the back. Seeing this, James was utterly despondent.
“It’s over! I thought Chris Shelby was a practitioner, but he turned out to be a novice!” With Chris Shelby’s slow pace, not only was first place out of reach, but even making it into the top three seemed unlikely. At that moment, Chris Shelby was second to last, only ahead of the Porsche that had been following him.
After reaching the mountain base, the sports cars started their ascent back to the top. Chris Shelby was still not rushing, casually pressing the car’s music system, and immediately, Lindsay’s song filled the air. Chris Shelby was momentarily speechless, realizing that James was also a fan of Lindsay.
Just then, the Porsche that had been tailing him sped up. As it pulled alongside, the Porsche’s driver rolled down his window and gave Chris Shelby the middle finger.
“Seriously?” Chris Shelby was taken aback by the disrespect.
With a smirk, Chris Shelby said, “Dare to despise me? Let’s see what I can do.”
With that, he slammed on the accelerator.
In an instant, Chris Shelby’s car surged forward. The Porsche sped up too, quickly overtaking him. Now, Chris Shelby was in last place.
Seeing this, James regretted his decision. If he had known it would turn out like this, he wouldn’t have enlisted Chris Shelby for the race. Not only was he not going to win, but he was also likely to finish last. It seemed his face couldn’t be saved tonight.
At that moment, a young man approached James.
