After leaving the Vance family, Esther had already been waiting at the door. Seeing Chris Shelby emerge, Esther curiously asked, “Dear, what did Mr. Vance want with you?”
Chris Shelby shook his head and replied, “It was nothing serious, just chess and tea.”
“Really?” Esther was taken aback.
Caspian Vance, such a significant figure, had summoned Chris Shelby just to play chess and drink tea?
As they were preparing to head back, a young man driving a Lamborghini suddenly blocked Chris Shelby’s path. “Are you Chris Shelby?” he asked with a stern look.
Chris Shelby frowned. “Who are you?”
The young man snorted, “Let me introduce myself. I am James, the young master of the Vance family. You’ve caused my cousin such misery, and today I’m here to seek justice for her.”
With that, Chris Shelby understood. This James was Caspian Vance’s grandson, Candace’s cousin! Was he here to avenge Candace?
Narrowing his eyes, Chris Shelby smiled and asked, “And how do you propose to seek justice for your cousin?”
“It’s simple, if you’re brave enough, come with me!” James challenged, eyeing Chris Shelby defiantly.
Initially, Chris Shelby did not want to engage with James, but remembering he was Candace’s cousin, he thought for a moment and agreed, “Alright!”
Turning to Esther, Chris Shelby said, “Dear, you go on ahead.”
“But dear…” Esther looked worried as she watched Chris Shelby walk away with James.
Chris Shelby reassured her with a smile, “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine!”
“Cut the chatter, get in the car!” James snapped impatiently, seeing Chris Shelby and Esther’s affectionate goodbye.
James had always been especially close to Candace. Unaware of the full story, he believed Chris Shelby was responsible for the downfall of Candace’s Nance Group and the tragic death of his uncle. He wanted to stand up for Candace.
With a light chuckle, Chris Shelby got into James’s car. The engine roared as James floored the accelerator, and the Lamborghini sped away.
An hour later, James drove to the outskirts of Middleton. Chris Shelby remained expressionless.
To Chris Shelby, James was just a young master who hadn’t grown up. What could such a young master possibly do to him?
Seeing Chris Shelby’s impassive face, James asked coldly, “Do you know where I’m taking you?”
Chris Shelby shook his head, “I don’t know!”
“I’ll tell you, today I’m taking you to Crow’s Nest Pass in the Middleton outskirts!”
Chris Shelby was momentarily stunned. He knew of Crow’s Nest Pass. It was a famous racing spot in Middleton, consisting of a mountain road with nine sharp turns, popular among the young masters of Middleton’s major families.
What James intended by bringing him to Crow’s Nest Pass was unclear to Chris Shelby.
Soon, they reached the foot of Crow’s Nest Pass. At that moment, two SUVs blocked the road leading up the mountain. “This road is closed, you should try somewhere else,” a few men in suits approached and informed them.
Since Crow’s Nest Pass was a racing spot for the young masters of Middleton’s families, the road was closed to the public in the evenings.
James rolled down the window and shouted, “Are you blind? Dare to stop my car?”
Recognizing James, the men in suits quickly changed their demeanor. “It’s Master Mo! Quickly, clear the way and let Master Mo through!”
Several men in suits promptly moved the SUV to the side to clear a path for James. James was the young master of the Vance family, and he had a bit of a reputation among the second-generation elite of Middleton. Though Caspian Vance had retired, the influence of the Vance family still loomed large, and the major families afforded them a certain degree of respect.
James snorted coldly and then drove up Crow’s Nest Pass. The mountain road of Crow’s Nest Pass was notoriously complicated, with one sharp turn after another. It was easy for an inattentive driver to send their vehicle tumbling down the cliffs. Every year, racing at Crow’s Nest Pass resulted in fatal accidents involving both cars and people. Yet, the thrill was irresistible to these privileged youngsters.
Half an hour later, James reached the summit where there was a vast parking lot. The lot was filled with a variety of modified sports cars. Aside from the cars, numerous scantily clad women milled about, clearly the playthings of the wealthy young masters. James parked his car and then stepped out.
Chris Shelby looked at James and said indifferently, “So, what’s the reason you brought me here?”
James scoffed lightly, “Chris Shelby, I know who you are. From what I’ve gathered, you staged quite the street race in Middleton yesterday, managing to shake off two black Audis in the downtown area.”
Being the Vance family scion, such information was not difficult for him to obtain. At these words, Chris Shelby frowned slightly, apparently aware of why James had brought him here.
James continued, “My request is simple. I’ve made a bet with some folks to race, and I need you to race for me. If you win, I’ll overlook the matter between you and my cousin.”
Hearing this, Chris Shelby couldn’t help but laugh. “And who are you to me? What concern is your cousin’s matter to you?”
“You…” James was taken aback by Chris Shelby’s refusal to give him face. After all, as the Vance family’s young master, he was accustomed to respectful treatment.
James gritted his teeth, “Chris Shelby, what will it take for you to agree to race for me?”
It turned out that James had made a bet with other young elites to race. However, his opponents were highly skilled, and he was no match for them. But losing the race would disgrace the reputation of a Vance family scion.
After much thought, James decided to approach Chris Shelby. The video of Chris Shelby’s downtown Middleton street race had gone viral online. With Chris Shelby’s skills, James was certain of a win.
Chris Shelby glanced at James and said coolly, “I can help you, but not because of any so-called face of the Vance family. I’m doing this for Candace’s sake. But if I win, you must promise never to bother me again.”
James nodded fiercely, “Agreed! If you help me win, I’ll leave you alone for good.”
Soon, James arranged for Chris Shelby to race. Chris Shelby got behind the wheel of James’s car and headed for the racetrack. Starting last, Chris Shelby was at a disadvantage, as the initial position in a race is crucial for maintaining lead.
