Chapter 45: Ava was Pregnant

Book:His Unwanted Bride (Married by Mistake) Published:2024-11-1

Alice ‘s words made Richard feel guilty and tongue tied. Alice is right. If they could treat Sam Leon the way they did, then no one else should expect anything better from them.
This is not about Adrian and Anna now, this involves him. He is also a part of this inhumanity towards the faithful Sam Leon and his daughter.
He didn’t stand up for her when he should. He left Adrian to do whatever he likes and turned his face away when Anna put on her acts of wickedness towards Ava.
“I know Ms. Alice. But I beg of you, to give me a month. Would you just wait until my father gets back from the hospital, then we would be able to sort things out” Richard pleaded helplessly.
From this moment on, he would treat his employees with utmost respect. They’ll henceforth be a part of his family and never will there be a discrimination anymore.
For many years, Alice has been their cook. She worked with them and had been so hard working. He cannot let her go away like that, he wants her to remain with them and retire rather than resigning.
“I won’t sir. I want to attend Ava’s burial. I’m sorry but I no longer want to work with you sir” Ms Alice insisted, placed the letter on the sofa and wanted to leave when Adrian stopped her.
“Ms. Alice. Good morning ma’am” Adrian said, his tone calm and gentle. He removed the shade he was putting on and stared at her.
Ms. Alice paused, glanced at herself from her entire body to her feet. What happened to her that this brat greeted her and even added “ma’am” to her? It can only mean one thing, she’s the next to die.
She raised her arm and smelled it. Is she smelling different from her usual smell? Yes, that must be it. Because she woke up that morning and didn’t prepare breakfast for them. They all must go fasting to Ava’s funeral.
Yes, she’s smelling different. The smell of cooking and dishes were not on her. That must be it. She’s now a ma’am because the smell of the kitchen has been replaced with a better smell.
Adrian and his parents just stared at her. They know what she was implying by her dramatic demonstration. Adrian sighed softly and said “I’m sorry Ms Alice.
I know you are leaving majorly because of my past actions. I’m sorry for everything. Don’t leave because of me. I promise that things would be different henceforth”
“Mm.. mm were you referring to those words to me” Alice asked, glancing at Adrian with surprise. She’s about to die, no doubt. Perhaps the next funeral will be hers.
“Yes, Ms Alice” Adrian answered. This meant that he had been an asshole. But he had not always been like that. He’d lived a quiet and private life in the past until his marriage to Ava Leon.
“I’m about to die. Someone come to my aid” Alice blurted out. She wanted to run out of the mansion but Adrian stopped her by standing in her way.
“Adrian, are you alright?” She asked, raising her hand to touch his neck. Upper part of his neck was exposed and she expected him to throw her hands off but he didn’t.
“I’m perfectly fine,” Adrian replied, not moving away from her touch. He’d promised himself to be a changed man. Things will be different henceforth.
“I’m a changed man now, Ms Alice” he announced. After Ava’s death and the discovery of the previous evening, he’d decided to be a responsible man henceforth and that is going to start with everyone in the Lester mansion.
Alice’s eyes welled up. He’s a changed man now after things have gone bad. After many pains and tears, a few deaths. Now he’d changed. Why didn’t this change take place a few days earlier, perhaps Sam and his daughter wouldn’t have to die the way they did.
Clara wouldn’t have to be in such a critical situation at the moment. Now, a family had been destroyed and he then decided to be a changed man?
“I wish you’d decide to change earlier than now, perhaps Sam wouldn’t die. Perhaps Ava wouldn’t also have died, with your unborn baby in her belly” Ms Alice said.
She let the tears trickle down her cheeks. Ava is dead, there’s no need keeping that secret anymore. Adrian should know that he was responsible for the death of others alongside his own child.
“What do you mean by his unborn baby?” Anna asked. This part of Alice’s words touched her soul and she needed to understand what exactly she meant.
“None of you know, right? Ava Leon was pregnant with Adrian’s child” Alice announced, shifting her gaze from Anna and Richard who were so surprised to Adrian the one that is most shocked.
Adrian shook his head and said “No, Ms Alice, that’s not true. Ava and I never had any intimate moments together…” he trailed off. A terrible thing to say from a husband of two years.
But that’s the truth. He’d never slept with Ava Leon. There isn’t any way she can be pregnant with his child.
“You think so? The day she brought you home, you consummated your union with her but in a drunken state. You didn’t know and she chose to be quiet about it. That singular act made her pregnant Adrian” Alice explained.
That’s how Ava explained it to her and that’s how she explains it. She hopes he remembers that day and not calls her a bitch. It’s something he was capable of saying except that he said he’s a changed man now.
Within seconds, Adrian remembered that night. Yes, he made love to Lola. He knew he did it, having a vague memory of it and the evidence was too obvious the next morning on the bedspread.
“No, it was Lola…no.. no.. it’s Lola not Ava Leon” he stuttered, a certain reality drawing on him. That morning when he saw her, he felt like he held her intimately but he shrugged it aside.
He even asked himself if he was insane to make love to her. It cannot be that she was indeed the one he made love to and not Lola.
Richard was dazed. His eyes shooting daggers at his son. Did he make love to his wife and didn’t realise it? He got her pregnant and sent her to jail with his child in his belly?
“No, it wasn’t Lola that night. It was Ava! You took her virginity that night and you gifted her a baby in return. She was pregnant, Adrian, Ava Leon was carrying your child in her to her death” Alice seethed.
Not two lives but three had been lost. One of which never saw the light of this life. Its own father orchestrated his death and its mother’s belly was its grave.
Adrian was dazed. A fearful and frightening truth glared at him in the face and he gazed at Ms. Alice for a long time. He remembered that Lola kept insisting on being a virgin. She indeed was still his intact girlfriend.
Then Ava’s sudden dizziness made her almost slumped when he went to see her. She was indeed pregnant? She wasn’t acting that day? He turned carefully to glance at his parents and they both were filled with rage.
“You killed your own child too, Adrian. Your ruthlessness killed them both by fire. You didn’t spare her. You never gave her a chance to tell you about the child.
But at least Ava saw the light of this life, but the innocent little one in her belly was not allowed nor given that chance. His father never allowed him to, his life started and ended in his mother’s belly…” Alice was saying when Adrian raised a hand and stopped her.
“No…no…please…no” Adrian stuttered, he couldn’t say another word. He rested his back against the stairs rail as his tears gave way.
