“Remove the mask, you fool!”
“What does it mean to say, remove the mask, you fool? That tone lacks any semblance of encouragement. It should be a voice that instills fear, not one that fails to unsettle me.” I spoke, adjusting my attire, a black hoodie that hung loosely on my frame.
My gaze remained fixed on the bag marked in red; I presumed it contained something essential for the task at hand.
“Maxwell desires the alpha’s new mate, Harper. Therefore, ensure you approach Harper with a voice that intimidates, not this overly assertive tone you are currently practicing.” I remarked hoarsely, observing his expression.
“I will, and please refrain from correcting me, James; you are merely a messenger like myself.” He responded, casually brushing his hair back.
“Let us acknowledge that there is a notable distinction between us; you are tasked with capturing a lady while I handle the media oversight.”
He hissed as he gathered his belongings for the mission. Suddenly, the sound of his growling stomach resonated through the room.
“Make sure to eat something, because if Alpha Ethan discovers you attempting to take his new mate, I may not be able to assist you further.”
“Consider it your last meal.” I said gruffly, tossing his wristwatch in his direction.
His eyes met mine, his stare intense. “Understood,” he replied, his voice low and steady.
I handed him a communicator. “Keep me updated on Harper’s location.”
He nodded and turned to exit, his footsteps reverberating in the dimly lit space.
As he vanished into the shadows, a chill coursed through me.
I began to prepare my device for communication. My fingers moved swiftly over the keyboard, my eyes fixed on the screen as I attempted to assess the surroundings before the fool got himself caught.
James, your vehicle is equipped with a device, a tracker that can assist me in locating you should any difficulties arise.
“Enough, I will manage just fine; I am skilled in this game, have you forgotten?” he replied, just as I heard the powerful roar of his car engine.
“Look, I will reach the pack house as quickly as possible because Alessia ordered pizza earlier.” He paused, and I could hear a heavy sigh escape him. What transpired next?
“I killed the pizza delivery man. I was aware that our conversation from the pack house was being monitored, so Maxwell sent me a text outlining the next steps,” he stated, sending a chill down my spine. I had been oblivious to the situation until now.
James has deeper ties to Maxwell than I do. I shrugged my shoulders and turned in my seat, the sound of the movement resonating due to the loud scrape of my chair.
“Exercise caution with Maxwell, James.”
“He is our superior, but I fear he may be exploiting us,” I carefully articulated my thoughts.
“I understand. Let me change into something more appropriate, like a pizza delivery uniform, before heading out. Don’t worry about me; I will be fine. We are doing this for the money, correct?”
I nodded, even though I knew he could not see me. I took a deep breath and swiftly grabbed my headset from the table.
“James, the operation commences immediately. Change and proceed to the alpha’s mansion. Please…”
“Understood,” James’ voice came through the headset, calm and composed.
I observed on the monitor as James’ vehicle arrived at the pack house. He quickly donned a pizza delivery uniform, seamlessly integrating into the surroundings.
“I’m in,” James murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
My heart raced as I monitored his movements via the mansion’s security cameras.
Suddenly, urgency punctuated James’ voice. “I’ve located Harper’s room. But Alpha Ethan is approaching.”
I tightened my grip on the headset. “Get out immediately!”
James’ reply was fraught with tension. “I’m trying… Guards are closing in.”
I held my breath as he maneuvered through the complex hallways.
Alessia’s voice chimed through the communication device, sweetly deceptive. “Pizza delivery, right this way.”
My stomach churned with anxiety.
“James, please be cautious,” I cautioned.
Static filled the air.
“James, respond!” I insisted.
Silence ensued.
My screen flickered, and the feed went dark.
“James!” I called out, my voice reverberating in the empty room.
My phone vibrated unexpectedly, displaying an SMS from Maxwell: “Phase 2 initiated. Await further instructions.”
A chill ran through me.
He is my only brother; I cannot bear the thought of losing him.
As I rose to leave, momentarily forgetting my headset, I caught a faint whisper from his end.
“The delivery person is quite attractive. What is your name?” a feminist voice inquired.
I sank back into my seat as I finally recognized James’ voice.
My heart raced.
“Thank goodness you are alive! I was contemplating ruining Maxwell’s life if anything were to happen to you,” I said, spinning in my chair, my excitement evident.
“I am alive, but I cannot take Harper; she is with Alessia, and the pack mansion is heavily fortified.”
“Where are you?” Your light soprano voice resonates through my headset.
“I am leaving the pack now; I cannot take her.”
“That is good news, brother,” I responded, clapping my hands, unable to contain the wave of joy that surged within me.
“Thank goodness,” I exhaled, relief flooding over me.
James’ tone shifted to seriousness. “Listen, I overheard something. Maxwell’s scheme extends beyond Harper.”
I tightened my grip on the headset. “What do you mean?”
“Alessia mentioned a gathering tonight. It is significant. Maxwell may have caught wind of it.”
My thoughts raced. “Get out immediately. We will regroup and reassess.”
“I am already en route,” James replied, the sound of his engine roaring in the background.
Suddenly, my phone chimed again, revealing Maxwell’s message on the screen: “Change of plans. I will be visiting our hideout today.”
“James has failed. A new strategy is required.”
That man will not cease his machinations; I fear this will not end well for us. In frustration, I ripped the headset from my head and hurled it against the wall.
Fuck you, Maxwell!
