Kate’s POV
I pulled Dimitri up from the floor breathing hard as I tried not to let myself be ruled by fear.
He looked at me his eyes filled with betrayal, I wanted to apologize but what did it matter z I had not wanted him to know about the prophecy but now he did.
The air was thick with tension, every muscle in my body was coiled, ready to spring into action as I stood beside Dimitri, our eyes locked on Marcellus.
I stood in the center of the clearing, my heart racing as I felt the presence of Marcellus drawing closer his dark magic surrounding him seemed to choke the very life out of the forest, and I could feel it reaching out, trying to suffocate me.
“Kate,” Dimitri’s voice was a low rumble beside me, full of concern even though he was likely angry with me. He was close, close enough that I could feel the heat of his body, the strength of his resolve. His presence was like a balm, soothing me.
But it wasn’t just Marcellus that had me on edge maybe it was the weight of the prophecy bearing down on me like an anchor, my wolf was restless, more so than ever before. I could feel her pacing, her energy crackling under my skin like electricity.
Marcellus laughed even as his power became even more suffocating
“Do you really believe you can escape the prophecy, girl? Do you think your pitiful pack can save you?”
My heart pounded in my chest, and I felt the rage building inside me, the fury of my wolf mixing with the raw power of the magic that I had not known I had in me.
“I don’t care what your prophecy says,” I spat, stepping forward, my voice rising with defiance.
“I will make my own fate, and I won’t let you take that from me.”
I wasn’t going to die because of some god’s whims, despite what they said the power in my veins trickled like thick syrup in a slow slide. My wolf howled in response, her own power battling with the magic, and I struggled to keep them both under control.
“Stay focused, Kate,” Dimitri’s voice cut through the chaos, grounding me in the present. “We’re in this together.”
I nodded, swallowing hard as I forced myself to focus on the task at hand.
“You cannot stop the inevitable,”
Marcellus sneered at us, his eyes glowing with dark power.
“The prophecy will be fulfilled, and you will fall, just like all those who came before you.”
” You keep saying that , I’d like to see you prove it” I roared, running towards him
With a flick of his wrist, Marcellus sent a blast of dark energy hurtling toward us. I barely had time to react, when up a shield of magic that I wasn’t entirely sure would hold went up in front of me, in bright white light, I huff d a breath surprised and confused on how the hell I had done it in the first place the impact was like a physical blow, and I staggered back, the force of it nearly knocking me off my feet, something hot slide down my nose, I ran the back of my hand over my nose to see blood.
“We make our own destiny, sorcerer” I spat, my voice stronger than I felt.
Dimitri was there in an instant, his hand gripping mine
” Are you ok” he asked and I nodded, looking away
“Kate, focus,” Dimitri urged, his voice tight with strain.
“You’ve got this.”
With a roar, I unleashed the magic, feeling it surge out of me in a wave of pure energy rushing out of me the force of it was staggering wild and untrained, Marcellus’ eyes widen briefly but just as easily he batted the attack away and sent a spark of energy that blew me off my feet, my wolf whine, I lay on the flow my back arched as my bones snapped and reset all over again my wolf, was struggling for control with me
But I couldn’t let that happen. Not now. Not when everything was on the line.
All around me the sounds of my pack mates fighting the animated rogues around us sang in my ear like a broken record, I didn’t know how to stop it, the more he attacked me, the more it felt like I was bleeding on the inside.
” Kate, Kate ” Dimitri roared across to her and she looked to him smiling slightly, blood over her teeth, he rushed to attack Marcellus who struck him away like a fly, I lay there weakened and his words came back to me
” We can do this, I’m with you forever” he promised,
A bright light appeared at the back of my eyes and I blinked
” Hello child ” a woman mumbled
” I’m dying” I whispered and she shook her head running her hand through my hair
” No dear child, you aren’t. Do you want to ” she asked and I whined
” Not really, I don’t want to leave Dimitri” I mumbled and she smiled
“Your mate is a whole dilemma but no, you won’t leave him ” I smiled
” That’s nice”
” Then wake up, and fight him, that is all you can do ”
I nodded, taking a deep breath as I dug deep, pulling on every ounce of strength I had and dragging up to my feet as my wolf growled in response, her power merging with the magic, it was chaotic, wild. I could feel it slipping through my fingers, threatening to tear me apart.
With a fierce cry, I pushed back against Marcellus’ attack, the force of my magic colliding with his for a moment, it felt like we were evenly matched, then then, slowly, I felt his power beginning to overpower mine, like a tide rising against the shore.
“You cannot win,” Marcellus taunted, his voice echoing in my mind.
But I wasn’t alone. I had Dimitri. I had my pack. And I would be strong for them.
“You’re wrong,” I snarled, pouring every ounce of my will into the words.
“I will not be defined by your twisted magic or your dark visions. I am stronger than you, stronger than any prophecy!”
I let go, stopped fighting the magic, stopped trying to control it just embraced it, let it flow through me, let it merge with my wolf’s power.
The two forces clashed for a moment, the chaos threatening to overwhelm me. But then, slowly, they began to harmonize, to work together.
I roared in pain and relief as a blast of energy that erupted from me was like nothing I had ever felt before, light poured from my fingertips, my toes all of me beating like a massive group of cells.
Pure, raw power!
Marcellus’ eyes widened as if he sensed the shift, of power within me.
“Impossible,” he hissed, a flicker of fear in his gaze.
I channeled the magic within me into a single, concentrated strike. And then, with a scream of defiance, I released it.
It hurtled toward Marcellus with the force of a tidal wave. He barely had time to react before it hit him, and I saw his eyes widen in pain and fear as it drew blood as black as his evil magic.
Marcellus’ power waned, his spells becoming, more frantic. I could see the cracks forming in his composure.
I didn’t give him a chance to recover.
With a final shout, I unleashed the full force of my magic, the energy exploding out of me in a wave of light and power. It crashed into Marcellus, shattering his defenses and sending him reeling.
“You… you cannot do this,” he hissed, his voice laced with desperation coming like a a small whisper
“The prophecy… it will come to pass!”
But his words were hollow now, empty threats from a man who knew he was losing.
“The prophecy means nothing!” I replied, my voice echoing over the field.
It didn’t sound like me even I knew that but still I spoke hovering over him
“We make our own fate, and this is the end for you, Marcellus!”
With a final surge of power, I unleashed the full force of my magic, the energy crackling through the air as it slammed into Marcellus. He screamed, the sound piercing and filled with agony, as the light consumed him.
And then, just like that, it was over.
The dark energy slowed down disappearing from around me like a mist, the oppressive weight lifting from the air as Marcellus crumpled to the ground, defeated.
The silence that followed was deafening, the sudden absence of magic leaving the air feeling strangely empty.
I dropped to the ground in a crumpled heap as my legs gave out from underneath me
Dimitri was at my side in an instant, his arms wrapping around me, pulling me close.
His warmth was a comfort wrapping around me like a blanket, I leaned into him
“You did it,” he whispered, his voice filled with pride and relief.
” I did it. I don’t know how I did” I mumbled dazedly looking around the field of men who had joined me in this fight, pack mates who were also friends realizing exactly how I had done it.
“We did it,” I whispered, my voice shaking. He kissed my hair chuckling deeply as I relaxed against him
” You’re the bravest woman I have ever met. I am proud to have you as a mate ” he mumbled and I smiled
” I love you too”. I offered, my body felt like a live wire, buzzing with energy that poured from me like electric current, but it didn’t feel unruly anymore, lie I couldn’t control it.
It was like that power had merged and my wolf had accepted it
“I can still feel it, the power in me Dimitri,” I admitted, my voice barely a whisper.
” I can feel my wolf, she seems calmer, no snarling like she’s at peace with me” I huffed and he stilled, I looked up at him and saw the flash if worry in his gaze, he was still hiding something from me.
“Are you ok, ” I asked and he smiled held me tighter, his voice low and soothing in my ear.
” I’m fine we’ll figure it out, Kate. Together. We’ll face whatever comes next, just like we did today.”
