Tom just smiled without answering her question. He didn’t feel awkward or angry.
Agnes smiled back at him, sensing his easygoing nature. “What time is it?” After finishing the sweet potato, Tom Fritz tied up the bag with the potato skins and took the wet wipe handed to him by the girl to clean his hands.
Agnes checked her phone for the time. “Almost eight o’clock. Do you have to go to work?”
“No.” Even though it was past their agreed breakfast time, Tom didn’t seem in a hurry. He calmly said to her, “I need to go home. We’re having guests today.”
“Oh, then you should hurry back. You need to take a shower and change your clothes.” The girl stood up. “Come on, Bubu, come to Mommy!”
The term “Mommy” sounded a bit… ambiguous to Tom’s ears. When Agnes said it, she realized it too and felt a bit embarrassed. She glanced at him, her cheeks slightly flushed.
She quickly took the kitten from his arms and said, “This might be the last time we see each other before you go back to the lab, right?”
“Not necessarily.” Tom chuckled and teased, “With our magnetic field, we might see each other three times a day.”
Yeah, several times before they thought it was their last meeting, but they ended up seeing each other again and again!
Holding the kitten, Agnes waved its little paw at him. “Bye-bye then~”
“Mm-hmm.” Tom Fritz waved back at her. “Next time I’ll treat you to sweet potatoes.”
“Okay.” The girl smiled sweetly.
They walked together for a short distance before parting ways.
Agnes occasionally had an illusion that Mr. Fritz gave her the same feeling as Mr. Cat did-steady and reliable. A gentleman, warm like jade, without any arrogance or frivolity.
Tom Fritz didn’t rush back to the manor; he had already had breakfast and didn’t bring his phone, enjoying the tranquility.
He strolled leisurely along the tree-lined path towards the manor with his long strides. His face was calm and expressionless; no one knew what he was thinking.
The butler, who had been anxiously waiting at the gate for him, finally breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Tom approaching.
Tom walked over, and the butler respectfully bowed again. “Young Master, Madam wants you to see her. Your phone is with her.”
The butler didn’t mention that there was a message from a girl named Bubu on his phone because he knew Tom would see it eventually.
“Alright.” Tom stepped inside.
He took a shower first and changed his clothes before going to his mother’s room.
He knocked on the open door. Jane turned from the window with her phone in hand; it had been half an hour since her son came home.
She didn’t blame him for taking a shower first.
“Who is Bubu?” Jane looked at her son and asked softly.
Tom Fritz was momentarily stunned. Did she check his emails? Use his computer? Impossible.
His mother stared at him intently, waiting for his answer.
Tom Fritz knew there was no point in hiding it. He said, “A girl I met online seven years ago. She fell for me, but I don’t have special feelings for her. I can’t tell her directly; I need to consider her feelings.”
“It’s better to be straightforward than dragging it out,” Jane handed him the phone. “She sent you a video message early this morning. If you hadn’t given her any hope, why would she send you a video?”
Taking the phone and staring at the screen, Tom didn’t know how to explain-it was Agnes after all.
