Chapter 63

Book:Lycan King's Substitute Bride Published:2024-10-27

Nova’s POV
Standing outside the King’s Hall at night was never a good idea. The chillies coming from the fountain made the air on my skin stand.
What if His Majesty received my letter and decided not to come? What if he didn’t even read my letter? What if I got him provoked with my letter? What if… Just what if?
My heart tightened at the thought of what His Majesty might do after receiving my letter kept lingering in my mind. I couldn’t help but be negative with my thoughts since he didn’t even want to see me, Disposing of my letter won’t be a problem for him, would it?
I absent-mindedly stretched out my hand, collecting water from the fountain with my palm while waiting for Rezso. My heart hammered against my chest as I heard his footsteps approaching.
I hastily poured out the water on my palm and wiped my hand on my dress. I had a quick bath after Rezso left.
I didn’t want His Majesty to meet me in that dress I had been wearing since Daybreak, so I hastily took a bath and changed into a red evening gown.
At least, if he was going to meet me, he should meet a nice version of me, no?
The wind blew, causing my hair to be scattered all over my face. I moved my hand to my face and moved a few strands of hair away from my face, tucking it behind my ear.
The footsteps got closer and I had to take in a deep breath, making sure to wear a smile on my face before slowly turning on my heels to face His Majesty.
My fingers curled into a tight fist when I couldn’t see his Majesty anywhere, other than Rezso who stood a few steps away from me, acting like he had done a bad thing to me.
“Where’s his Majesty, Rezso?” I asked, my voice came out in a whisper and I felt my fist tremble as he shook his head negatively.
What’s that supposed to mean? Did he not want to meet me? Did he not read the letter?
I couldn’t wait to hear his response before I started to assume what His Majesty would likely do.
“He wasn’t there in his office, so I dropped the letter for him,” Rezso mumbled, he pressed his mouth into a thin line as he stared at me with guilt in his eyes.
“You didn’t meet him?” my voice cracked as I spoke, I shut down my lid as I felt my heart break into a million pieces.
“He wasn’t in his office when I got there, but be rest assured that he would get your letter because I made sure to put it in a place he would be eager to check what was written in the letter,” he uttered, his eyes sparkled under the moonlight for no reason and I watched on as he gave me a reassuring smile.
“Oh,” I sighed, a part of me wasn’t buying what he was saying, but a part of me wanted to hope on his word.
Perhaps Prescott would see it later and come to meet me. Will he do that? I shook my head, not believing that a man who ordered the guards not to let me into his office would come running to me if he got my message.
Maybe I was thinking too highly of myself as Ulrica said. Ulrica? That wench Ulrica?
“Your Highness?” a voice called, I hastily turned my neck to check who was calling me. For a reason, the voice sounded familiar and I let out a short smile when I saw Lady Everest, walking up to me in a long stride.
“Lady Everest,” I smiled, recalling I hadn’t seen her anywhere after that day. “You’re here?” I asked, moving away from the fountain to the long bench that was placed beside the statue in the front yard of the building.
“How long has it been, Your Highness?” Lady Everest gave a funny bow before plunging into the space beside me on the bench.
“Long enough to ask how you’ve been doing.” I chuckled, moving my gaze to Rezso who had his back fixed on us.
What was he doing? Trying to stay out of my chat with Lady Everest? I chuckled inwardly.
I think Lady Everest must have seen where I was staring at because she also moved her gaze to Rezso, before letting out an audible gasp.
“You?” Lady Everest barked, her voice echoing through the foyer, forcing Rezso to turn around to have a look at her.
His lips curved in a shy smile as his eyes locked with Lady Everest. I wondered what was up with the two because Lady Everest motioned to Rezso to come closer to her which he obeyed.
“Greetings, Lady Everest.” Rezso greeted, his eyes glued to the floor as he tried all he could to avoid the Lady’s gaze.
“Why haven’t you been coming to train at the field? Did you suddenly change your mind from learning a few fights from the best?” Lady Everest whined, her eyebrows knitted as she spoke.
“Ahh, that,” Rezso chuckled, he was acting a little awkward around Lady Everest and I let out a faint chuckle.
“I’m trying to learn a few tricks from Warrior Dixon.” Rezso smiled, his eyes sparkled as she spoke.
Lady Everest let out a weird giggle. “Learning from that loser who knew nothing, huh?” she laughed, her stomach making a loud noise as she tried to control her laughter.
“He’s not a loser. He’s the best warrior so far in this land.” Rezso tried to defend the so-called Dixon, which seemed to annoy Lady Everest because she sprang up from the bench.
“Best? Dixon, best warrior?” she scoffed, moving a little closer to Rezso who seemed to be getting a little annoyed with Lady Everest.
“Do you know remember how I beat his ass in that duel?” she flared up, her eyes burning as she marched toward him.
“Beat?” It was Rezso’s turn to raise his voice, “he just didn’t want to fight back because you were a lady and also a royal.” Rezso groaned, his cold glare on Lady Everest amused me, making me forget about my issue.
“Who told you that? When a guy loses to a lady, why is it so hard to admit he was no match for that lady rather than finding a flimsy excuse to support your point?” Lady Everest whined, stomping her feet on the grassy floor.
“Aside from His Majesty, warrior Dixon has never lost to another before, so why would he lose to you…”
“Because I’m a lady?” Lady Everest smirked, completing Rezso’s speech.
Rezso nodded, agreeing with Lady Everest that what she said was exactly what he had in mind to say.
“Funny.” Lady Everest chuckled, she turned away from him and came back to sit down on the bench, “Next duet is just a few days away, this time I want you to tell your best warrior to not go easy on me, because I am going to beat his loser ass same way I did in the past.” she smirked before moving her gaze from him.
“Yeah, I will deliver your message to him, Whoever wins this duet will be my tutor.” Rezso groaned before turning away, and marching out of the King’s Hall.
I watched him walk away with his fists clenched at his sides. “What was that?” I asked, moving my gaze to the lady who kept grinning beside me on the bench.
“You minding the other gender? They’re full of themselves. Always looking down on anything F E M A L E.” She groaned while emphasising the word, ‘female’.
“I supposed they never want to acknowledge the strength of females.” I chuckled, not wanting to believe Lady Everest was getting all worked up because of her fighting argument or whatever her argument with Rezso was.
“That irks me.” she hissed, throwing her arm around my neck, and pulling me a little closer to her body.
“Why are you here, my Lady?” I asked, sniffing in her scents of freshly cut grass.
“Taking you out of this gloomy Villa. It doesn’t seem like you’ve ever stepped foot in the town since you got here.” She grinned, rocking her head with mine.
I chuckled, feeling a little entertained by her presence. “No. I haven’t.” I confessed.
“Great! Let’s head to the #1 pub in the town. There’s an activity going on in there every night like this for seven days.” she exclaimed, jumping down from the bench.
“Shall we?” she asked, stretching out her palm for me.
“Ahh,” I stared at her palm, wondering if I should just decline her offer and go back inside to sleep. “I have work tomorrow,” I mumbled, recalling I needed to be at the office in the morning.
“Office?” Lady Everest smirked, grabbed my arm and pulled me up from the bench. “Fortunately, no one will question you if you decide not to show up at that hades of an office.” she beamed while snaking her arm around my neck.
“I guess that’s true.” I chuckled, while foolishly agreeing with her.
Lady Everest’s eyes sparkled as she heard my reply.
“Now, let’s go! I’ve got the car!” she grinned as she dangled the car key in front of my eyes.
I guess stepping out of this Villa won’t be a bad idea at all.
I smiled as we raced out of the King’s Hall while gigging like a teenage girl who’s going out to have fun for the first time.
