Prescott’s POV
Sitting behind my office desk with my palm on my chest, gently caressing the part that got stabbed with that poisoned dagger.
“Ummm,” I let out a painful moan as my fingers softly pressed on the wound that was still covered with plaster. I hadn’t completely healed from the wound because of the poison that was used on the dagger and the thought about the person behind it made me want to demolish the pack.
The corner of my mouth curved into a smirk as the scene replayed in my head. The grin on the first daughter’s face as she plucked the dagger into my chest made me wish I had killed her on the spot, right there in front of Nova whom she had talked into rebelling against me.
But then again, what will Nova say about me? Wouldn’t that prove her right that I was truly a beast she had accused me of being?
I let in a drag of air as my mind drifted off to Nova and I wondered how she was doing. Was she busy resenting me? Or has she moved on with her life?
I couldn’t stop questioning myself since I was the one who pushed her away from me, It was not really a great decision to make but since I couldn’t bear to think of Nova as an accomplish in the attack on me.
I had to let it slide by creating that tall wall between us. I fear I might end up caging her in my arms if I let her come closer to me. I missed her like I missed Mom’s early morning tea.
I sighed, moving my gaze to the window, watching the night sky through the opened window of my office.
Suddenly, I felt a presence in my office, I moved my gaze away from the window to the door, and there, I watched as my Beta entered into my office with his eyes on me.
“It’s Wharton!” I moved my gaze from the door, staring at the heaps of files on the table.
His footsteps echoed as he made his way to my study.
“Your Majesty!” Wharton gave a slight bow as soon as he got to me, he moved his gaze around before pulling out a chair across from me and gently sitting down on it.
That eerie feeling I felt from him the other night was still there, I tried shaking the feeling off but it was so thick that I was beginning to feel suffocated by the dark aura around him.
“Yes, Wharton?” I groaned, swirling the chair so I could have a proper look at him.
His face didn’t change, he was still the friend I had known since forever, How could the air around him change within that short period of time I spent outside the royal Villa?
Or maybe he hadn’t changed, maybe it was my thoughts.
“I heard from Ulrica that you got hurt from the pack,” Wharton mumbled, his eyes were on my palm on my chest and I hastily looked away from him. Letting my hand slide down to my lap.
“Ulrica?” I scoffed, wondering if she really had to feed Wharton about me getting hurt at the pack. I was suddenly regretting ever telling her about the incident. Ulrica could be a secret keeper but not with Wharton. Ulrica blab anything when she’s with him, her second best friend.
Speaking of which, I didn’t tell Ulrica anything about the incident, how the hell did she know? Recalling how she left after Nova came to my office the previous night, she had left before Wharton came so I didn’t really have a chance to tell her. How the hell did she know?
“Ulrica you say?” I adjusted in my seat while crossing my arms over my chest. “I didn’t tell her anything.” I scoffed, watching the expression on Wharton’s face change as I said that.
“Oh,” he chuckled, moving uncomfortably in his seat. “I did remember I was the one who assumed you got hurt, Ulrica wasn’t really the one who reported it.” he gulped down nothing, while rolling his sleeve up to his upper arms.
“Ahh,” I glared at him, wondering when he started using Ulrica’s name to seek out information from me.
“How did you know?” I threw the question back to him, watching him shrug off his shoulders as he spoke.
“You’ve picked up the habit of caressing your chest since you returned to the Villa, and that’s what you do when you get hurt in a particular spot in your body.” he let out, sighing as he traced his eyes on my clothed chest.
“Sure, you have a point,” I whined, throwing my head backwards as I slowly placed my head on the headrest of the seat.
“So, what happened? How did you get hurt?” Wharton asked, his tone was filled with concern and I wondered why he was so interested in knowing how I got hurt.
“I would..” I trailed off, staring at the anticipating glare on his face.
“I would rather not talk about it.” I chuckled, knowing it would sound a little bit off if I should tell anyone how it happened.
Wharton was thrown into a pit of his own thoughts as he gently drummed his fingers on my table before parting his mouth and saying.
“Sure. Since you’re okay now, how you got hurt isn’t important to anyone.” he flashed me a toothy smile and I nodded my head as he withdrew his hand from the table.
“Why are you here?” I asked, raising my head from the headrest.
“I heard the werewolf girl has resumed the office today.” he started, averting his gaze to the window.
“Yes, I approved the document this morning. Didn’t you sign it before dumping it on my table?” I questioned, my eyebrows raised as I stared at the side of his face that was on me.
“I did. I thought you wouldn’t approve it since you only agreed to have her work alongside with you just so you could get the elders to sign the papers.” he shot his gaze at me, staring right into my eyes.
I let out a dry chuckle as I moved the swirl from left to right. “No. I didn’t deceive the elders into thinking I would give the Queen a chance to work alongside me, I said I would because I wanted to do it.” I uttered, my tone was a little high, leaving no room for argument or protesting.
“Okay.” Wharton mumbled, he cleared his throat before asking, “What about the rogues, did you later find any clues about the infamous rogue leader, Eruba?”
It was as if a long-gone burden that was long forgotten had just come back to weigh down on me. My breath hitched as I remembered my purpose of going to the pack.
“No. Everything I did proved abortive and I couldn’t get anything from the rogues that got caught.” I groaned, gripping my head in my hands as the thought of a like of Eruba roaming around the nation and no one knew who he was.
“I fear we would have to turn a blind eye to the things he does, we won’t be able to know who he is.” I shut my eyes and I could fear I felt Wharton grinning at me.
I hastily flung my eyes open to see that Wharton wasn’t smiling at all, his face was hardened as if he was thinking about what I had just said.
Why then did I think he was grinning? I arched my brows as I kept throwing him a confused look.
“Let go of me!” a tiny voice yelled from outside of the office, my headshot at the door as the scent of the lady I never wished to run into filled the air, soothing my troubled mind.
“I swear to the goddess I would make sure you lose your job if you don’t let me go through this fucking door.” the voice cried out yet again, I chuckled when I realized what my little Queen was trying to do.
Threatening the guards with their job so they would let her in, huh?
“Is that not the werewolf girl?” Wharton asked, his voice sounded so high and rough and I wondered what was with him.
“Yes. She is!” I chuckled softly, moving my gaze back to the door to see if she would succeed in walking through that double door.
“Your Highness, please you can’t go any further from here. I fear I will have to escort you back to your office.” one of the guards said, his voice came out unsteady and I didn’t know when I let out a cocky smile.
He sounded like he was afraid of losing his job as my little girl had said. So, her threat did work on the guard.
“Who are you to tell me where I can go or where I can’t be?” Nova’s pissed voice broke through the door, I propped my elbows on the table, waiting for my Queen to take some more action.
My expectations were later got cut when I heard the angry voice of Ulrica questioning Nova’s authority.
“And who are you to question the royal guard?” Ulrica’s voice was high-pitched which shook the whole building.
My eyebrows raised in shock as I stood up from my seat, ready to go save my Queen from getting embarrassed any further from them. But what I heard next made my legs wobble and I fell back to my seat.
“You’re not that important because his Majesty made you the Queen out of pity. Your pack would have been demolished if His Majesty hadn’t taken pity on your kind and made you his Queen. Don’t think too highly of yourself because you’re nothing but a mere tool his Majesty used to obtain his freedom from the elders.”
I felt a sharp object pierced through my heart as I heard Ulrica say those hurtful words to Nova. My heart tightened in regret as I slowly curled my hands into a tight fist.
