Chapter 35
DAVINA’S POV
I felt my palms becoming sweaty as I clapped them together. I tried to control my breath while my eyes were fixed on Tammy, who was kneeling in front of me, looking concerned and asking if I was okay. It was my first time in Tristan’s room, and I had been having nightmares. Seeing something related to it was so creepy. I watched Tammy pour me a cup of water and she handed it to me. I mumbled a thank you before drinking it down.
“Please lie down, you’re running a fever,” she instructed. I checked my temperature and realized she was right. Her tiny hands held mine as I picked her up and lay her down next to me. Then, I laid down and she pulled the duvet over us.
“Thank you,” I mumbled, and she scoffed.
“I should get the maids,” she said as she prepared to get off the bed.
“No, just stay here. We can take a nap. I will get better before nightfall,” I assured her, but it was not convincing enough. She was adamant as she got off the bed.
“What if something happens to you, daddy will be mad at me, and everyone else?” she added, which made me arch my brows.
“I’m not important to him-
“He was a little worried yesterday when you went missing. I told him you were missing-
“Did you tell him?” I asked, staring at her with a perplexed expression.
“Carla told me,” she responded, standing close to the side of the bed.
“You are close with Carla?” I asked and she nodded.
“Wow. The rest?”
“No!!! They are bossy, unlike Carla.” She responded while I picked her up to lay her close to me.
“You don’t want them to know you are burning up.” I watch her tiny red lips move cutely.
“No sweetheart. It’s just a quick thing. I will be fine if I take a nap.”
“Okay, time for a nap. Goodbye,” she said, closing her eyes while her legs twitched childishly. I chuckled and adjusted her for a comfortable rest, then pulled the sheet cover over us, ready to dive into a warm nap.
TRISTAN POV
I exited the hall after speaking to the pack members and some representatives from neighboring communities to gather information and ensure that it was disseminated to every home. I emphasized the need for everyone to remain vigilant until tomorrow’s mission, which aims to eliminate all rogue elements. Upon entering my office, I found my brother in his usual seat.
“Long time, brother,” Javier greeted as he stood up for a hug.
“Welcome back, Brother. How is the research going?” I asked as I took my seat.
“Fine, fine. The much-feared Alpha, that is the rumor around the city and neighboring state,” he replied, and I scoffed, getting relaxed in my chair.
“Found a mate?”
“Not yet.” He replied picking up a file. “Your Luna heard she’s a bit sassy and troublesome,” he added which made me roll my eyes.
“Where are you getting this info?” I asked fixing my gaze on him.
“Brother watching out for you, I guess,” he replied. I stared at him; he looked stressed and worn out.
My escort filled me in on what happened while I was away. I’m glad I returned at the right time.
“Nothing much Javier, just the recent rogue breakout.”
When will the hunting take place so that I can join?
“You should stay back here and secure the pack house. Davina isn’t skilled yet, so I will need you and the rest of the men to take care of it while I’m gone.”
“How is everything going between the two of you?” he asked with keen interest. I shrugged. “Nothing, she’s getting to know more about the pack and its rules.”
“That’s a lie,” Grey growled in my head, I shut my eyes in annoyance.
“Just the pack and the rules? Are you sure about that?” he asked, glaring at me sarcastically.
She causes trouble and is constantly in violation of the pack rules, often to a significant extent.”
“Left the pack without your knowledge or which one?”
“She did more than that. If possible, even worse, she went on a walk with my daughter without an escort or the maids… She argued with me this morning. She wants to hire someone I fired. How dare she?!”
“Oh, wow! You have a tough mate, I must say,” He laughed so hard, trying to catch his breath. I paused, staring at him with a heavy glare.
What’s so funny? Do you think this is a joke? You have no idea how hard it is for me. I had to leave the pack house to search for her after we had a disagreement and she went missing. She ended up fighting with two rogues-
“That is amusing,” He said, “she is strong.” He admired her, which made me even angrier.
“Seriously, did you have a little mishap on your trip? Javier! Having strength like that is amusing!” I yelled, perplexed by his words.
“Yes, another benefit for your pack is having a young, beautiful lady as your mate. She’s going to be there for your pack, she’s strong and tough, and she’s going to build a family with you one day. What else are you looking for?” He sweet-talked. I grimaced in disgust.
“Family? What family?” I asked with a blank look.
Don’t deny that you understand what I’m talking about. How long will you continue to ignore what you feel for her?”
What do I feel around her? Hatred and disgust?”
Funny, you can’t fool me, even if you want to deny it. We have been brothers since birth. You act tough, but you’re soft inside. Why don’t you just let go of the past and see the better future right in front of you?
Javier, you’re still fixated on this. “I’m tired of constantly letting go and seeing what happens in the future. Davina should serve her purpose for the pack, and we will be fine. My daughter is all I have. I don’t want another soul in addition to her,” I said conclusively, getting up to pour myself some wine.
“You know, brother,” he said as he stood up. “I hope the moon goddess blesses her with another mate, someone who will appreciate her for who she is. Then she will realize there are more opportunities and options. I hope she doesn’t realize that too late.” He advised before walking out of my office, and I chuckled.
“Opportunities and Options.” I chuckled at the thought of it.
“She will serve my pack until her last breath!”
