Although Nelson had been humiliating her for the past month, making things difficult for her, and even causing a stock market crash, she was confident that as long as she didn’t mention divorce, Nelson wouldn’t either.
“Of course, Nelson told me everything. You married him to put Grandpa at ease,” Marilyn said, her big, bright eyes blinking innocently.
Callie’s heart tightened. “He told you.”
He had shared such a secret with Marilyn.
“Yes,” she confirmed, watching Callie’s expression.
Suddenly, Callie didn’t want to argue anymore. “Yes, when the time is right, we will divorce. Miss Ellison, please be patient.”
Marilyn’s eyes flashed with surprise and delight. She leaned on the table with both hands. “That’s what he said too.”
Although it was expected, hearing it still made her heart sink.
“I thought you’d be difficult to deal with, but it seems you’re more sensible than I imagined,” Marilyn said with a smile. “I will wait patiently until your divorce. Don’t worry about your future; as the future heir of the Ellison family, I won’t let you suffer.”
Her demeanor was lofty and aristocratic.
“Alright.” The bitter taste of coffee lingered in Callie’s mouth.
The future heir of the Ellison family indeed had confidence. Unlike her, who had nothing but a sick father and no longer held the position of design director. She didn’t want to be Marilyn’s enemy because she understood the situation.
Rather than being Mrs. Oconnor, she wanted to survive.
After Marilyn left, Callie returned to Shamar’s office. He looked worried. “How did it go?”
Callie gave a helpless smile. “What else? She can’t do anything to me.”
Shamar sighed. “Lately, there have been many rumors in the industry…”
“I know,” Callie interrupted, sitting on the sofa. “Let’s talk about you. Nelson isn’t targeting you; you can seek his help, can’t you?”
“Callie, do you remember what my brother said when the company became independent?” Shamar sat opposite her, smiling bitterly. “He meant to leave everything to us, which also means we must bear any consequences ourselves.”
Callie remembered. “But he’s your brother.”
“Not by blood,” Shamar reminded her.
As their eyes met, Callie suddenly understood that Shamar was far cleverer than she expected.
“I understand,” Callie nodded. She stood up and patted Shamar’s shoulder. “I’ll do my best to help you.”
As she turned to leave, Shamar called out to her. “Callie, I’ve always looked up to my brother and wanted to achieve something on my own. The Oconnor family has rules; if I can’t make something of myself, I have to go back home. I don’t want to go home.”
Callie’s back stiffened. Such ambition made her feel even more guilty. Maybe if she hadn’t been so willful yesterday, Nelson wouldn’t have acted this way.
After leaving Shamar’s company, her first destination was Oconnor Group. Kieran looked at her cautiously. “I heard you were fired…”
Callie raised an eyebrow. “Do you have to bring that up?”
Kieran fell silent.
In fact, among all the things happening, being fired was the least of her worries.
Jaquan called and gave her an address. “Come over for dinner.”
“I’m heading to Oconnor Group now.”
“No need.”
