“Going to Oconnor Group?” Jaquan asked over the phone, as if he were an outsider.
“If I had known, I wouldn’t have gotten involved in your mess.” Callie straightened up, her head pounding. She took a tissue to wipe her mouth clean and then found a lipstick in her makeup bag. After applying it, she looked a bit more presentable.
She probably shouldn’t have challenged Nelson’s limits and authority.
“What’s the situation?”
“Not good.” Jaquan was in his office, flipping through reports. “This turmoil has affected mid-level companies throughout Ylosea. Nelson’s moves against Scott Group were swift, and the people below suffered.”
Callie never expected Nelson to go this far just because he was angry with her. “What about Scott Group?”
“They’ve initiated emergency protocols. Callie, it’s not just me. Nelson’s actions have even impacted his own companies.” Jaquan added, “Shamar’s team is involved too.”
Callie’s headache worsened. That man was simply insane. “Just tell me what I need to do.”
“Stop Nelson’s next move. This stock market crash can’t continue. I’ll send you a document later with all the affected companies.”
After hanging up, Callie realized she couldn’t drive herself. She immediately called Kieran. “Where are you?”
He was taken aback. She hadn’t been to Oconnor Group much lately, so he had been idling at home.
“Still remember to call me? I thought you were going to fire me.”
“Cut the crap and come pick me up at Paucaster Villa Complex.”
She packed up and checked her phone to see the document. Sure enough, Shamar’s team was on the list. They had been declared independent by Nelson in public; though they were free, they seemed helpless under such heavy blows.
Kieran arrived quickly. Callie got in the car. He asked where they were going, but she didn’t answer. The car stayed put.
The phone rang for a long time before Shamar finally picked up. “Callie?”
His voice was extremely tired, as if he was also overwhelmed.
“How’s it going?”
“The company was about to go public, and now there’s turmoil. A foreign company wants to acquire us at a high price.”
Callie frowned in surprise. “Your parent company is Oconnor Group.”
“So what?” Shamar quickly retorted.
Both of them understood what that meant. After a moment of silence on the phone, he said, “Callie, I’m starting to think this is all a conspiracy.”
His defeated and exhausted tone filled Callie with immense guilt. She closed her eyes. “Where are you now? I’ll come find you.”
She shouldn’t have ignited this fuse. Only now did she realize how important the position of Mrs. Oconnor was.
Shamar gave an address, and Kieran drove there.
Internet companies usually had young blood. At Shamar’s company, everyone was whispering, knowing they were in a special period.
Callie walked in briskly and pushed open Shamar’s office door under the assistant’s guidance. “Shamar-”
As soon as she opened the door, she saw two figures inside. One of them was particularly familiar-it was the woman who had been frequently seen with her husband over the past month.
Marilyn, dressed in professional attire and holding documents, turned her head and saw Callie’s face. She raised an eyebrow and smiled.
At this moment, silence spoke louder than words.
